The prolific Scots folkie sets aside his own compositions, along with his usual
band, the Athletes, to celebrate tradition on this album of covers. His main
focus is the canon of songs revived by 60s trailblazers like Anne Briggs and Nic
Jones; "Hills of Greenmoor", "Sovay", "Little Musgrave" and other tales of
poaching, shipwreck and murderous passion. Yorkston's mournful vocal burr is
intimate and engaging, while the instrumental backings, by Leeds's Big Eyes
Players, are consistently inventive, whether providing stately strings, purring
pedal steel or psych-folk soundscapes. This is an inspired homage to timeless
British song.
