No messin’, Maniac is making some of the heaviest grime beats around right now with a CV including beats for everyone from Wiley to Trim and Tinchy Stryder. He’s basically the go-to man for a hot beat if you’re a top shelf MC in the UK. ‘New Age Grime’ is his first solo artist album and includes 14 uncompromisingly rugged instrumental riddims to use as you wish. For now at least Maniac hasn’t sullied his style with any UKF productions or comedy electro-house bangers, it’s all straight down the line for this man as we can clearly trace a line from his beats through Danny Weed’s darker mysticism and Wiley’s lean and itchily funky styles.

The new Pepper Pots sound offers a modern vision of Motown, Stax or Studio One

After 6 years on the road and two studio albums ("Swingin' Sixties" – 2004 - and "Shake It!" –2006), The Pepper Pots return with a new and brilliant album: “NOW!”

“NOW!” is another step forward in their search of Soul sound. Produced by Binky Griptite (Sharon Jones, Dap Kings, Amy Winehouse), the album has been recorded at Musiclan Studios (Spain) and Dubway Studios (Manhattan, USA), analogically mixed in Brooklyn and mastered at the Trutone Mastering Labs in New York. The new Pepper Pots sound offers a modern vision of Motown, Stax or Studio One.

The Pepper Pots made a choice on the “old school” sound and look, with a strong influence from classic Soul and Jamaican music. The band has toured around Europe many times. France, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, Germany, Finland, Austria, Russia, England are some of the countries where they have performed. They even have toured around Japan (Tokyo, Osaka, Okayama, Nagoya, Fukuoka).

They have also performed in the most important European festivals: Riversite Stomp Air Festival 2007 (Mainz-Germany), 22nd SummerJam Reggae Festival 2007 (Cologne-Germany), Rototom Sunsplash European Reggae Festival 2007 (Usoppo-Italy), Rock for People 2007, RudeCat Festival and Black Music Festival… The Pepper Pots has been invited to the South by Southwest Festival 2009 (Austin, Texas), where they started a tour in the United States, playing 8 dates in the West Coast.

The Pepper Pots are ready to introduce the new album, “NOW!”, to all their fans around the world, an album which will be supported by a documentary about the recording of the album.

The Pepper Pots are:

Adriana Prunell, Merce Munne, Marina Torres: Vocals - Joan Vergés: Drums - Joan Barrientos: Bass - Lluís Rodríguez: Guitar - Ireneu Grosset: Keyboards - Tomy Muñoz: Tenor sax - Gerard Cifra: Baritone sax - Roger Montsant: Trumpet - Isidro Palmada: Trombone

A MESSAGE FROM BINKY GRIPTITE, PRODUCER:

Soul is the sound heard around the world. Some cities like Detroit, Memphis, Muscle Shoals, and Brooklyn have become well known as exporters of soul. Now we may add one more city to that list; Girona.

Just an hour or so from Barcelona, the 11 young ladies and gentlemen that are The Pepper Pots have been doing what hip kids everywhere have been doing for years- loving soul records. They have been sitting by their turntables, listening and learning from the masters like Marvin, Diana, Billy, Otis, Jackie, Curtis, Sharon, Sam, Smokey…the list is LONG! But loving soul records is not a passive experience. Eventually one will want to show one’s love of soul records by making soul records. And with “Now”, the Pepper Pots will show you what they have learned.

The Pepper Pots are not new to the scene. They are old pros. They have been touring and making records for years. On their first two releases they showed us their love and devotion to the early Jamaican Ska sound. But with this latest LP, “Now”, they show us all that we Americans do not have a monopoly on this phenomenon called Soul Music. And we wouldn’t have it any other way. Don’t worry though, they have not forgotten their roots, this album has Jamaican sounds too!

Let me introduce you to the girls. Let’s start with Marina “Vabyface” Torres. With her lush falsetto tones it is no wonder that she found her “Dream Guy”. Adriana, the dark mysterious one that loves music and fears fame, after you hear “You’re Still in My Mind”, it will be her voice that is in your mind. And Mercè, the sensitive one with the notebook full of poems, she is the one that believes in Love and will “Keep Waiting” no matter how long it takes!

As for the band, I could go on and on about Joan, Joan, Luiggi, Ireneu, Gerard, Tomy, Patu, and Roger, but you would do best to get this record onto the nearest turntable and let these guys speak for themselves.

So to music lovers everywhere I have good news; the best record you’ve heard in a long time is here and it’s “Now”. To Adriana, the one who does not want to be famous, I have some bad news…

It took me a while to get around to this review because I couldn’t stop listening to this album. I’m not the hugest J5 fan so I was really surprised at how much I loved it. The production on each song is first rate and when you add his lyrics to the mix you get something phenomenal. Fans of underground Hip Hop don’t need to be preached at about Chali 2na but the rest of you need to pay attention.

Chali 2na has been around for a long time from his days at Project Blowed to his time with Ozymatli and this is the best I’ve ever heard him. He has a deep baritone voice that is infectious and a lyrical delivery that is unmatched. The songs are a good mix of style and topic from feel good party music to heartfelt tributes to fallen friends. Some might say that there is nothing groundbreaking about the album but there is something to be said about making a solid album that is a natural progression on what came before.

The song So Crazy has an addicting beat. I like the idea of a defense of genius and how that genius can easily be eschewed as being crazy. It’s a good way to set up the listener for the rest of the album. Lock Shit Down features a guest spot from Talib Kwali and is off the hook except the chorus is missing something. The lyrics are tight however and that makes up for the weak chorus.

The album takes an energetic turn with the song Don’t Stop featuring Anthony Hamilton. The song really picks up the pace and is a good transition into more high energy music. The album overall has a lot of energy and really gets my head to bobbing; I haven’t had this much fun listening to an album in a long time.

My favorite track has got to be Comin’ Thru another high energy song that makes even me want to dance. The album is like an hour long party that never lets you hold up the wall, 2na takes control of every song and doesn’t let anything stop him, I have so much respect for him as an MC.

Some albums tend to wind down towards the end and so does Fish Outta Water, but that’s okay because 2na takes the opportunity to show his versatility as an MC. With a voice that deep it would seem hard for Chali 2na to change it up, but he manages anyway. When Will I See You Again is a curtain call for all the rap acts that blazed the trail for acts like 2na and others and is a great song with a smooth beat.

Guns Up featuring Damian Marley is probably my least favorite song on the album; it just doesn’t really jibe with the albums flow. It’s a good song but not in keeping with the party vibe the rest of the album has, it’s definitely a b-side song.

In the end I have to recommend that you give this album a listen, it will appeal to a broad audience because of 2na’s unique style and delivery and attention to what he says. He stays on point from beginning to end and a lot of artists don’t. This is a great album to introduce someone to Hip Hop with; it’s light on the cursing and has a very welcoming feel. Do yourself a favor and check out this great album.

Leave This Town is the second album of the American rock band Daughtry and set to be released on July 14, 2009. The band has stated that the sound of the album will be much heavier than their previous record.

Chris Daughtry announced on his Twitter that there would be 14 songs on the record, but 5 bonus tracks in different stores. Daughtry co-wrote the songs on the album with Chad Kroeger from Nickelback, Ryan Tedder from OneRepublic, Trevor McNevan from Thousand Foot Krutch, Jason Wade from Lifehouse, Adam Gontier from Three Days Grace, and Eric Dill from The Click Five. On May 29, 2009, Daughtry released the album art cover. The song written with Ryan Tedder didn't make the album.[5] Despite the fact that 14 tracks were announced, only 12 made the final cut. Three songs from the CD, "No Surprise", "Every Time You Turn Around" & "You Don't Belong", will be used to promote racing on ESPN. The full album can be streamed on VH1 beginning July 7th.

A Good Dream

Named after a small woodland bird with distinctly American associations, Philly’s Hermit Thrushes are one of those refreshingly unclassifiable bands, using mishmash to their advantage and taking “experimental” to mean free-for-all. There are definitely threads of psychedelia in their tunes, as disorienting tempos and trippy found-sounds blend with overstimulating instrumental bits and parts. Fittingly, the members themselves are known for their wacky antics – live shows often feature zany behavior and outfits, and frontman Yianni Kourmadas is said to have gained inspiration and field recordings from a mystical journey through Greece.

The cramming of all these elements into their second album Slight Fountain is anchored in the bedrock of familiar 90s indie music, so that through the clamor there are discernable structures and melodic shards to hum. One might even go so far as to call Hermit Thrushes two bands combined into one more enticing whole: Kourmadas’ cute, meek vocals and lo-fi strumming overlap with a group of tinkering music nerds who experiment with sounds and noises like a bored teenager. They also contain a fair share of goofiness, overall making them comparable to early Ween and The Unicorns.

Lead single “Snowflake Heart” is a delightfully catchy track that goes miles with the repeated line “The scent of almonds,” its spastic beginning softened by an adorable acoustic phrase before elevating to a flurry of glockenspiel, quivering horns, and hyper drums and guitar. And as for that bedrock of 90s: “Push” recalls The Olivia Tremor Control in its ordered yet cacophonous tempo, as does “Golden Wounds” after its stint of shimmery wind chime clanging. The summertime “Song From Boat” faintly recalls Built To Spill, building on one repeated phrase with clacks, clangs and woozy guitar variations. Hermit Thrushes’ consistent strength is that they keep it interesting, whether one looks for sheer pop in their music, or the more intricate details of song craft.

NATIVE WINDOW Billy Greer - Bass and Vocals David Ragsdale - Violin Phil Ehart - Drums Richard Williams - Guitar Not long ago, the members of Kansas found themselves in a bit of an uncertain situation, to say the least. Three to four years ago, the main writers for Kansas - Steve Walsh and Kerry Livgren - stated that they would no longer be writing for the band Kansas, explains drummer Phil Ehart. That didn't mean that Kerry might not write a song or two for a special project, but that the two of them were done writing any album length material for Kansas.

In 2006 a tour was delayed for a few weeks in connection with the announcement that original violinist and secondary lead singer Robby Steinhardt had left the band. He had originally left in 1983 but returned in 1997. Robby was a central part of the band's live shows, acting as the emcee during both tenures with the band. David Ragsdale subsequently returned to the lineup on violin and guitar. In 2008, as announced on the Kansas website, four of the five members of the current Kansas lineup (Phil Ehart, David Ragsdale, Richard Williams and Billy Greer) have formed a recording project entitled Native Window. The lineup (featuring Greer on lead vocals) released their self-titled debut album in June 2009

Initially conceived as the sophomore solo album by singer/songwriter John
Wozniak, Marcy Playground's fourth album, Leaving Wonderland...In a Fit of
Rage, never quite shakes the feeling of being the work of one man: acoustic
guitars outweigh the electrics and a hazy spirit of eclecticism hangs over
the album, as do circular Lennon-esque psychedelic melodies, all fueling a
feeling of introspection. This means Leaving Wonderland sounds quite a bit
different than its loud, grungy predecessor, MP3, not to mention Marcy
Playground's eponymous 1997 debut, but its weathered, worn sounds feel
appropriate for the band 12 years on from "Sex and Candy." Elements of that
early version of the band can be heard here, largely in Wozniak's facility
with a hook -- best heard on the lightly propulsive "Star Baby" -- and also
how the group can occasionally grind out some noise. But this isn't about pop
or rock; it's a nicely inward-looking collection of adult rock. It does feel
a bit like a solo album, but it's better that it's released under the group's
name, because it deserves to be heard by a wider audience as it proves that
there's more to Marcy Playground and Wozniak than one grunge-era hit

19. MGMT - Time To Pretend (Reissue EP) (2009) (Electronic,Dance) (Rapidshare)

01. Time To Pretend ( 4:32)
02. Boogie Down ( 3:33)
03. Destrokk ( 3:45)
04. Love Always Remains ( 5:37)
05. Indie Rokkers ( 4:25)
06. Kids ( 5:34)

It is clear that this duo has excellent pop-sensibilities and know how to
draw a listener in. But they also know how to provide sufficient variety by
having different sounds pulling off a track's all-important hook. 'Boogie
Down' replaces the keyboard with something that sounds similar to an
accordion, while the key component to the following 'Destrokk' is akin to a
xylophone. Both of these cuts also build up involvingly as the songs
progress, a quality possessed by pretty much every track on this EP

Success has done weird things to Just Jack. While his literate English pop peers--Lily Allen, The Streets--have responded to fame by becoming larger-than-life caricatures, channeling tabloid controversy back into the music, Jack Allsop’s third album is shy, understated--anonymous, sometimes. But if All Night Cinema is more everyman tales than indulgent self-analysis, it’s a look Just Jack wears pretty well. Lead-off single “Embers” proves that some pretty moving productions are within his grasp, an emotive production of dancing violins, hand-claps, and harmonies that overlay in beautiful patterns, while “The Day I Died” demonstrates that the knack for casual storytelling that Allsop demonstrated on The Outer Marker and Overtones is still present and correct, a relaxed lope of acoustic guitar and thunking drum break that hides a bittersweet twist in the tale. Other moments might prove a mite relaxed for fans who like their pop with more edge, but the album’s only real misstep is “Goth In The Disco”, an unconvincing electro-pop pastiche that overreaches somewhat as it tries to rhyme “dance” with “ambulance”.

Just Jack returns with his stunning new album All Night Cinema, the follow-up to his smash-hit LP Overtones. All Night Cinema sees Just Jack at his blistering best. Produced and almost entirely written by Jack (along with co-production by past collaborator, Jay Reynolds), it is a genre-busting album, packed with infectious, catchy, hook-laden tunes. The new LP features straight-out, hard-hitting pop songs, wrapped around Jack’s razor-sharp lyrics and acute observations. Lyrically, he finds himself talking about everything from the sublime to the ordinary, eloquently depicting life in England in Jack’s very own inimitable way.
