Imagine a voice that sings the blues like a street-wise angel: smoky, nuanced, filled with feeling. A voice equally at home with jazz and soul, that shifts from folk and chanson to country, cabaret and elsewhere with ease. A sweet, strongvoice suited to extreme emotions. A voice you can’t stop listening to. Now picture a dark-haired woman in satin and tulle, dancing fast in red patent heels. A woman inspired by love and loss, by poetry, gravestones and eavesdropped conversations. A complex, enigmatic woman of Nigerian/German descent who was born and raised in British Columbia, Canada, watching grizzly bears roam - and escaping, when she could, into fantasy.
Ndidi’s records "No I Never" & "The Contradictor" and her upcoming European debut "Move Together" capture the essence of this magical talent. Backed by a team of some of Canada's finest musicians on guitar, bass, keyboard, drums and twanging mandolin, Ndidi sings songs that demand attention whatever their mood. Lyrics, for the most part, are dark and curiously evocative. Sounds and tones are wide-ranging: here are slow torch songs and salon-style ballads. Rousing spirituals and big-band anthems. Splashes of reggae, surf guitar and down home boogie. All woven together with a blues thread and vocals that swoop, tumble and tell it like it is. Ndidi and the blues are on intimate terms. No one sings them like this who hasn’t lived them. “To really understand the blues you must have experienced the kind of pain that you can’t shake off, that sits inside of you. You have to walk the line and trust that one day it will get better. To get to that point…” She shrugs, smiles. “Well, that’s the blues.”
She’ll tell you more if you ask her. “I don’t have secrets” she says. A solitary child, she found solace in reading mysteries, writing poetry and performing plays - for unseen audiences - in the woods. “Then there was my mother’s record collection” she says. “It wad a treasure trove. I’d plough through everything from Billie Holiday, Bessie Smith and Big Mama Thornton to Leadbelly, Chuck Berry and Howlin’ Wolf to – oh! - Tina Turner, Donna Summer and Supremes-era Diana Ross. "All of which,” she adds brightly, “translates into what I do now.” Ndidi’s mother, recognising her musicality, entered her daughter in the regional talent contests usually held in school gymnasiums across southern and northern BC. Other kids sang sugary ditties, invariably off-key. Eight-year-old Ndidi’s signature piece was a pitch-perfect Goodbye My Friends, that tender farewell song often sung at funerals. Ndidi studied theatre then music then linguistics at Simon Fraser University before dropping out and heading to New York City. “I guess my singing voice was in a hidden place. I didn’t ever think about it. But when I got to New York I started singing a cappella on the open mic circuit, then sort of drifted into the hip hop scene ‘cause of the way I looked.”
After much musical exchange Onukwulu left NYC for Toronto where she sang in a rock band (“I just put on my high heels and thought of Tina Turner, who is one of my biggest influences in terms of performance”) and an indie-influenced, hip hop flavoured electronic outfit called Stop, Die, Resuscitate. “It was great fun and we even made a record,” she says with a grin. “But I still wasn’t doing what I wanted to do.” What she wanted to do, of course, was sing the blues. So, having written blues songs since herearly teens, Ndidi entered a songwriting contest held by the Toronto Blues Society. Accompanied many by award-winning players including Madagascar Slim, Steve Dawson (Black Hen Music, Zubot & Dawson) & Jesse Zubot (Drip Audio, Zubot & Dawson, Fond of Tigers) - she began performing at prominent venues including the hallowed Massey Hall, scooping New Artist of the Year at the Maple Blues Awards along the way and has shared stages with many of music's greats such as Watermelon Slim, Bruce Cockburn, Blind Boys of Alabama, Xavier Rudd, Amy Millan, Buddy Guy and Sean Kuti.
“Performing is one of my very favourite things,” says Ndidi, who recently played a singer named Ruth in the acclaimed Canadian independent film Nurse. Fighter. Boy, directed by Charles Officer and starring The Wire’s Clarke Johnson. “Some performers believe in the fourth wall,” she muses. “Not me: I love feeling people’s energy and sharing the energy I have.”She doesn’t mind sharing her more personal thoughts, either, even if this may cause discomfort amongst listeners. The tracks on her albums are inspired by a mix of the real and imagined, by things witnessed and dreamed up. “I get a lot of my inspiration from just observing people. Human beings fascinate me; I am always staring and eavesdropping and watching people move. I think because I was so terrified of people as a child I am making up for it now.” Then there’s her fascination with cemeteries, which she visits whenever she can: “You can create all these lives from clues. You see a gravestone and think, ‘Who were they? Where did they go?’ Then I’ll get on a bus and see asituation that brings the lyrics together.” Whatever – whoever – she’s singing about, Ndidi addresses her subject matter without holding back. “My music,” she says, "reflects my life."

The competent and successful musico-cultural eutection promoted by ECM founder Manfred Eicher since the release of Jan Garbarek/Hilliard Ensemble's Officium (ECM, 1993) takes another quantum step with keyboardist Jon Balke's imaginative and far reaching Siwan. Balke enters a realm of cross-cultural pollination evolving from Officium, through that same collaboration's expanded vision on Mnemosyne (ECM, 1999) to John Potter's excellent Dowland Project outings: Care-Charming Sleep (ECM, 2001) and Romaria (ECM, 2006).
The focus of Siwan is not one of strict musical scholarship, but rather the imagining of what music would have sounded like at a certain place and time lost to antiquity. That time and place is medieval Andalusia, the southern most region of Spain, where Muslim, Christian, and Jewish intellectual cultures mingled unmolested before the Spanish Inquisition. Balke's studies of the history and writings of the region revealed a thematic universality among the Sufi poets and the Catholic and Sephardic mystics, a fact clearly evident in the texts chosen for this special recital: literary works as seemingly diverse as the martyred Moor Al- Aallaj's "Thualthiayat" and San Juan de la Cruz's (St. John of the Cross), ecstatic "Todo ciencia trascendiendo" ("Rising Beyond All Science").
For this ambitious project, Balke assembled an equally ambitious set of artists. Central to the recording are French-Moroccan singer Amina Alaoui and violinist Kheir Eddine M'Kachiche. These two musicians are the Eastern herbs that give Siwan its most potent Moorish notes. Next in the mix is the liquid mercury tone of trumpeter Jon Hassell, who approximates with brass what M'Kachiche achieves with gut strings. As necessary to this musical image as in Latin jazz is the percussion provided by Helge Norbakken. The wrapping of this musical gift is provided by the guidance of Balke and Bjarte Eike's Barokkosolistene, providing the Western element to this recording.
So much of the musical alchemy today is attempted and achieved with strokes too broad to be trusted or enjoyed. What Balke and his predecessors Garbarek and Potter achieve is a thoughtful rendering of imagination: what the historic music received from the past may have sounded like when the original artist tired of rote performance and began to improvise (a situation that certainly occurred). As a musical statement, Siwan stands as a monument to uncompromising ingenuity and art. This music is radioactively fine, searing with its beauty, inspiring in its sublimity. By C. Michael Bailey

4. Swept Away

Anna Gilbert is a completely independent, self-produced, and self-composed artist. Her musical exploration began at a very young age when her father and mother introduced her to the piano and singing. One of her favorite past times as a child was making up songs while her father played simple chords on his acoustic guitar. Anna's childhood was one which thrust and immersed her into the very core and heart of song writing. Her parents played in a blue grass band and sang in a quartet, and her father was a music major and teacher before becoming a minister and worship leader. It was at her church in Eugene, Oregon that she gained much of her musical experience singing and performing in church choirs and small ensembles.
It was in elementary school that song writing became one of Anna's first loves. After winning an honorable mention in the fifth grade for her song composition in a city wide competition, Anna knew she had a strong passion to move people through the medium of music.
Throughout Anna's teenage years, she developed a large repertoire of song compositions. She began filling up notebooks, journals, slips of paper, and cassette tapes with lyrics and song ideas.
Anna began the recording process in a small studio in Eugene. Without the funds to hire an arranger or producer, Anna embarked on her project with only a couple friends to help her do the arranging and producing. She finally had a finished product a year later in 2003 and released her CD God Sees in Eugene and Portland on an extremely local and independent level. Without a website, marketing capabilities, or major publicity, God Sees sold 1,000 copies within the first few months of its release. As the word spread and the buzz grew, she began being invited to sing in Oregon, Washington, and California.
Anna has since recorded her second album "Falling in a Beautiful Place" - completely self composed and self produced.
She has also recorded a third album "YOUR LOVE MY MEDICINE" with Grammy Award Winning Producer, Charlie Peacock. The two met in Seattle, WA and after hearing Anna's music, he felt she had something special. The two began an artist development and song writing relationship, and began writing for the third album set to release in February
Anna Gilbert is an emerging indie artist from the Northwest. Her greatest strengths lie in her piano playing, her pure voice, and her utterly vulnerable lyrics. Anna's melodies sweep across rhythmically catchy and laid back tracks on her third album, "Your Love My Medicine", produced by Grammy Award winning producer Charlie Peacock. Her music is mellow, yet gripping and intense at times. Gilbert's third album is by far her most musically diverse and upbeat album, although it still plays on Anna's best features - honesty, heart, and sweeter than honey melodies.

The Summer Pledge is a Detroit based four-piece that intertwines elements of progressive-indie and soul music with a dash of nostalgia to bring a unique breed of creatively established ideas, themes and sounds. Orchestrations both fluid and intricate create a dreamy and explosive storm. Organic landscapes illustrated through space rock supernovas, The Summer Pledge's dynamic sensations from notes in time that are both thoughtful and passionate. Conceived in the winter of 2007, the band has worked painstakingly to properly introduce their debut album. "You Are You" is a thematic, rhetorical narrative on the coming of age and contingency of the white and blue collar working class throughout the modern day economic decline.
