CAPE CANAVERAL – Astronauts are back outside spacewalking again, this time to give the Hubble Space Telescope some new gyroscopes and batteries.
Replacing Hubble's old gyroscopes is the top priority of this repair mission. They are part of the telescope pointing system, and half of them aren't working.
The two spacewalkers — Michael Massimino and Michael Good — floated out of shuttle Atlantis on Friday morning. They will replace all six gyroscopes aboard Hubble and three of its batteries. The old batteries are original, 20-year-old parts.
Another spacewalking team installed a powerful new camera and computer unit.
In all, five spacewalks are planned so that Hubble is at its apex while living out its remaining years.
