Desire
A desire that arises from joy is stronger, other things equal, than one that arises from sadness.
Proof
Desire is the very essence of man; that is, the conatus whereby man endeavors to persist in his own being. Therefore the desire that arises from pleasure is assisted or increased by the very emotion of pleasure; wheras the desire that arises from pain is diminished or checked by the very emotion of pain. So the force of the desire that arises from pleasure must be defined by human power together with the power of an external cause, whereas the desire that arises from pain must be defined by human power alone. Therefore the former is stronger than the latter.
