Apple Store celebrates 1 billion sold apps!

Apple is nearing a significant milestone: 1 billion apps that users have downloaded via its Apps Store. To celebrate, the company is hosting a contest worth over $10,000. To enter, all users have to do is visit the dedicated contest page, where an Apple counter is counting up. When the counter hits “1,000,000,0003, the contest is over. The prize package is worth $13,746, and includes a 17-inch MacBook Pro, an iPod Touch 32GB, a $10,000 iTunes gift certificate; and an Apple Time Capsule. The company also revealed the top 20 downloaded apps of all time, and this includes games Tap Tap Revenge, Super Monkey Ball, and Koi Pond, and a Facebook app.

Customers can enter up to 25 times per day, either by downloading an app or by visiting a separate page that negates the purchase requirement. (As reader “suefrost” noted, however, this isn’t correct; users who use the page without the purchase requirement receive a message “You have entered to [sic] many times today” if they try to sign up more than once.) Although the iPhone and iPod touch have been an unqualified success, a billion downloaded apps is still a spectacular milestone, as the service has been available for less than a year. In December, Pandora Radio said that over 2 million users had downloaded its free app; the service ranks third on a list of free apps that Apple has posted; Facebook and Google Earth are the top two.
