Status Quo - Whatever You Want (1979) (Remaster Edit 2005)
Having lost their way somewhat with their previous two albums, Quo got back on track with this 1979 release. "Whatever You Want" is not only blessed with one of their most famous singles, the title track, but is a consistently solid, vibrant album. It doesn't have quite as much energy as their mid-1970s albums but it does represent (dare I say it?) a progression in approach. Lyrically, it moves forward, offering observations on life on the road and in the air on a few of the songs. This even prompted the NME to speculate that Quo were moving into concept albums. When they interviewed Francismore… Rossi about the album however he insisted that the words still didn't really matter as much as the feel of the music.Nevertheless, even the musical structure of some of the songs is more sophisticated. Alan Lancaster's "Who Asked You" for instance is a quality rock song that doesn't follow the usual formula yet remains a recognisably Quo song. "Come Rock With Me" segues into "Rockin' On", while "Breaking Away" is a lengthy number of distinct sections. Even "Living On An Island", despite its reputation among some Quo fans as being too soft, is a deceptively substantial recording that builds gradually.Quo never lose sight of what they're good at however and stay clear of the lack of unity that characterises "If You Can't Stand The Heat". Parfitt's "Your Smiling Face" is a good mid-paced track in their usual style while "Runaway" is a typical uptempo song. "Shady Lady" is a highlight, a genuine ripsnorter, while "High Flyer" leans towards Quo's melodic side.With a generous helping of bonus tracks, including two fine b-sides and a couple of promising demos of unreleased songs, the remastered disc weighs in at over an hour. This is a superb issue, a better purchase than the two for one release with "Just Supposin'" as that disc excludes a track from both albums due to limited playing time...Dichter Nebel
