Pyrus builds on the unique capabilities of the iPhone and iPod Touch to deliver an experience that has never been possible before. Pyrus presents players with five scrambled letters and asks you to assemble words as quickly as possible-- there are a few twists, of course.
Pyrus requires coordination and speed in addition to a great vocabulary. Words are harvested by placing and holding a finger on each letter of the word in the right order. When you release your fingers, the word is submitted-- but it's not as easy as it might sound. To be great at Pyrus, you'll need all five fingers flying in constantly changing arrangements.
Pyrus is less about building a high score than it is about just staying alive. Your score increases at the same rate as long as the game is in play, and words you collect add seconds to the timer, not points to the score. Be careful, though: when you see a new hieroglyph come crashing into the bottom of the screen, it means you've survived a level and the timer is now ticking away a little bit faster. It might be a good idea to build up a reserve of stored seconds while the going is easy so you'll have some extra time to spare when things get really hectic at the end.
When you make words in Pyrus, the letters you use are instantly replaced with new ones, but in such a way that a five-letter word is always possible. Unlike word games before it, Pyrus produces a fluid, ever-shifting wordscape that doesn't leave too much time to get comfortable with the surroundings.
How does Pyrus end? Usually in a frenzy of flying fingers, rapid breaths, and a vocabulary stretched to its breaking point. You'll know you've done well if you make your personal top ten list. You'll know you've done great if you make it onto the worldwide top 100 list. You'll know you've become a master if you glimpse the elusive Eye of Ra-- few have lived to witness the spectacle.
