Well, it was great ride. I remember last year being in shock when Ogi decided to resign as president of Mali Dim, and then being honored to take up the challenge of leading Croatia's first ultimate Frisbee club through a period of unprecedented growth. During this year at the helm, it was great to see the club transform from a group of people that threw a disc around a couple times a week, and occasionally went to a tournament, into a real organization with members pushing hard both on and off the field.
Being president was not just a series of glorious moments, such as writing about our victories on the blog, or seeing new people at trainings every week who would come back because they were so excited about ultimate, or hosting special presidential party sessions in the team vikendica on Hvar….there were many hours of boring administrative work. But what made that work manageable, and what makes FDK Zagreb so special, is that the president is NOT doing it all alone in a vacuum, but with a group of great individuals who have been given an opportunity to ACTUALLY MAKE SOMETHING HAPPEN. For real. Fo' shizzle. There is no limit to what we can accomplish as a club, and that is why it was inspiring to see many members wanting to take an active role during last night's elections.
I think my formative years as a zloćko kind of ultimate player characterized my presidency. I had played ultimate for almost ten years before I went to a team training, people drank cheap beer instead of water on the sidelines, and being part of the "organization" meant sending out an email once a week to notify the other players where the game was. I would like to think that I was a bit more serious than that while in charge, but the spirit of zloćko was always around the corner. I invested a lot of time in the team because of one thing…I love to play ultimate. And I think this literal spirit of the game has kept me on the field for twelve years. But I also think this is a great point in time to move forward with the club and take it to the next level. Time for O.G. Zloćko to step down and let someone with fancy footwork guide us through phase 3 – Total World Domination. We want to be serious, we want to have sponsorships, and we want to continue to recruit cool people who will represent the Croatian national team at increasingly more competitive tournaments.
That is why I was so pleased that "Komandant" Marko was elected as the new president of FDK Zagreb last night. He is exactly the kind of energetic athlete who has vision and the desire to do more than just reap the benefits of what has been done for the club so far, to move us toward goals I thought were impossible when I teleported into Zagreb in September 2006. With a great deal of confidence and much respect, I hand over the reins of power to Marko. May the Disc be with you. Ranko, however, will keep the keys to the vikendica, and the žig. Also, big big props to everyone elected last night – the details will be announced shortly – congratulations!!!
Let's get fired up….ULTIMAAAAAAATE!!!!!
Verno the Inferno
