Footage from an earlier show on the tour.
The last time I saw Strung Out was at their show at the Brooklyn Music Terminal. Unfortunately for me, the owners had a little tiff which resulted in one leaving with some of the equipment. This caused Strung Outs set to be riddled with technical problems. You couldnt even hear singer Jason Cruzs vocals.
So its about a year later s 300 the band has released their seventh album Black Hawks Over Los Angeles. The album pushes in a new step forward by taking a more pop approach to the bands metal and punk. Thats right, pop rock songs over metal. Incredible.
Strung Out were set to play one of my favorite venues, The Knitting Factory. Id finally have another chance to see the band live. Without problems. I hoped. Except things arent so easy. See, some days before the show, their van and trailer with all their gear was stolen in Philadelphia. I feared for the worst. Luckily, they pulled through.
My friend Steve, who took over my position as music editor of the Queens College Knight News newspaper, was lucky enough to set up an interview with one of the members of the band. He got Jordan Burns, drummer. We got to the club before the show started (something I try to avoid ).
Steve and I went to bathroom. Unbeknownst to me, in the next stall was Cruz. Upon exiting the stall, Steve tried to scare me. Cruz came out, and asked us if we were having a moment. That just about made my day.
We went to the merch table to find out about the interview. The merch guy told us to wait. We did, for a while. Some time later, he told us Burns was out to dinner with his family. I dont blame him, he was probably stressed with the situation. He asked guitarist Jake Kiley to cover for him.

We waited a very long time before Kiley and guitarist Rob Ramos came to the table. We introduced ourselves. Steve asked to do the interview downstairs. I wasnt sure what he meant. We returned to the bathroom. Most original location for an interview yet.
Steve asked a good deal of questions about the progression of michael kidd band and the music business. I chimed in a little. Kiley responded with calm, down to earth responses. He meant every word through the frequent toilet flushes. Some guys came in the room. Upon exiting, they realized Kiley was standing between the door and the urinal, and told him michael kidd were all decade long fans. He thanked every one of them. One of the fans even said he considered to bring his guitar so that Kiley could use it for the show.
We learned some things from Kiley. Dont spend too much on tours, and you end up making the same amount of money as popular bands. He used Avenged Sevenfold as an example. We also learned that having a lot of fans doesnt matter, but having a few really dedicated fans is a wonderful thing.
Kiley and the rest of Strung Out are everything I aspire to be as a musician.
We parted ways, and the band took the stage. They were amazing. They put themselves into every song like it was their last. They have an undeniable energy that their fans identify and reciprocate. For the complete michael kidd list check out this review of the show.
