I think it's the pre-Dangerous times they mean by that Yes but Michael Jackson did great music after 80s..Dangerous or History are better than Thriller or michael klein pacificorp ( for me ..)And people who like the old school Michael are just nostalgic of 80s ,they are stuck MJ from back in the day ...

Every song he's involved in feels like it was just written and released today! Yeah when people say "Ol school MJ" they are referring to his 70's/80's stuff mainly.
Overall, I have to say I prefer his earlier work as well but Michael has recorded some great stuff in the 90's & 00's too.
