When this case first broke, beyond the horror of the murders, I was upset to hear that a twelve year old girl was involved in a romantic relationship with a twenty three year old, and wondered how this could have happened? I was told by a visitor to this blog that the family was aware of the relationship and were desperately trying to end it. It seems the murder was in retaliation of the family's efforts to protect their daughter.
I was still stymied as to how this relationship could have even developed. Newer details of the case indicate the two met online, in a goth sub-culture website vampirefreaks.com . The site has since been shut down in the aftermath of the murders.
In recent months there has been much written about online predators, pedophiles and stalkers. Including a high profile case of a member of Homeland Security. The Medicine Hat case is a prime example of why The Haunting need to be protected online. This is the worst of worse case scenerio's.
The local school has pulled a children's book called Running from the curriculum. A concerned parent pointed out that the goth character may be inappropriate material for the school at this time. One of the features of the book is having students take a black and white picture of themselves and to draw themselves in as a goth character.
There is no evidence that this book, written about a brothers attempt to find his runaway goth sister had any impact on the young murder suspect, but its got to make you stop and wonder for a second, is this what they mean by a case of art imitating life or is it life imitating art?
The school will substitute the classic The Outsiders for the goth book. Not having read the goth book, I can't comment about its content or character beyond what I've read in the media myself. I am however, a big fan of The Outsiders and think it's an excellent pick for the students to study, especially at this time. It deals with the painful subjects of adolescent alienation, fragmentation of family, the sway of peer pressure and fringe groups. The study of this book, could easily dove tail into a supportive discussion about what these students must be going through right now. Grief, anger, bewilderment, betrayal, fear, apathy.
I am concerned this case may contribute to the demonization of Goth culture with anti goth fingers pointing to the the couples involvement in the sub culture. Instead of looking past the window dressing to the heart of the matter.
->Predatory behaviour running rampant in our societies.
On one extreme, we have women and girls being plucked bodily off the street, as I've been documenting in my Where Are They? Tag.
On the other extreme, we have predators reaching right into the karlaleomov.blogspot.com of our homes without leaving a trace of physical evidence to seduce, manipulate even brain wash their childish victims in a play for power. The only footprints, an IP address if you're lucky.
Child porn, encounters with children, corruption and seduction enough to prostitute oneself or even commit murder. I'm afraid to even ponder what other things lurk in cyberspace.
It inspires me to begin a collection of online safety links. The Tooth Fairy get to that later.
I never knew this family, I never knew this little girl or the man described as her boyfriend, and I don't know who maneuvered who into the murders, but I do know something went terribly wrong with this girl. It will be in all our best interests to learn from this case so we can better protect the children until they can do it for themselves.
