Marilyn Manson, pravim imenom Brian Hugh Warner, umjetničko je ime odabrao spojivši ime od glumice i modela Marilyn Monroe i prezime nepopularnog ubojice Charlesa Mansona. Na samome početku (1989) Mansonova se skupina, koju je osnovao sa gitaristom Scottom Mitchellom, zvala "Marilyn Manson and The Spooky Kids". Marilyn Manson rođen je 5. siječnja 1969. (Ohio, USA), a sa 18 godina preselio se na Floridu gdje je neko vrijeme radio kao glazbeni kritičar. Kratki period bio je zaručen sa Rose McGowan (1998 – 2001). Poznat po svojim ekstravagatnim istupima, ne čudi ni njegov hobi, skupljanje medicinske protetike, od umjetnih udova do staklenih očiju. Jedna od mnogih trivijalnih informacija jest i ta da je svoj dom u Los Angelesu jednom iznajmio The Rolling Stonesima koji su ga koristili za studio. U slobodno vrijeme slika i piše, a neke od njegovih slika kupio je Flea iz Red Hot Chilli Peppersa, Nicolas Cage i Jack Osbourne. Gotovo da se okušao i kao glumac pod redateljskom kapom kultnog Davida Lyncha. David Lynch planirao je Mansonu dati ulogu u «Mulholland Drive», no kako je na kraju snimljen film a ne kako se u početku planiralo TV serija, Manson se nije uklopio. Voljeli ga ili mrzili,samoprozvani “Antichrist Superstar” neosporivo je među najozloglašenijim i najkontroverznijim glazbenicima od 1990. godine naovamo. Slavljen i podupiran od vođa raznih pokreta za slobodu govora i žigosan od mnogobrojnih klevetnika kao 'drugorazredni Alice Cooper', Manson je jedna u nizu šokantnih rockerskih pojava, koji se penje do samih vrhova top lista na platformi seksa, droga i Satanizma. Iako osporavan od kritičara, njegov 'metalni image' u velikoj mjeri dopire do mlade publike. Djelomično i zbog sjajno odrađenog marketinga, Marilyn Manson postao je mainstream anti-heroj, usprkos ozlojeđenim konzervativnim potlitičarima i zabrinutim roditeljima.Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids (Gidget Gein , Scott Mitchell, Madonna Wayne-Gacy) na samome početku svog glazbenog djelovanja u vlastitom aranžmanu izdavali su kazete. Pažljivo razrađen gotički nastup Marilyna Mansona popraćen specijalnim efektima vrlo brzo se pročuo, gaže su se munjevito redale i kao rezultat rada u 1992. godini jedan su od najpopularnijih bendova južne Floride.Godine 1993. Trent Rezor iz Nine Inch Nailsa nudi im ugovor sa izdavačkom kućom Nothing Records i priliku da budu predgrupa na proljetnoj NIN turneji. Manson je prihvatio obje ponude i njihov je debi album ‘Portrait of an American Family’ u ljeto 1994. godine osvanuo na tržištu.S novim basistom Twiggyjem Ramirezom koji je zamijenio Geina, zloglasni image benda je u rastu. Najmanje popularan ‘ispad’ desio se u Salt Lake Cityju, kad je Manson za vrijeme nastupa na bini poderao kopiju Mormonske knjige. Osnivač Sotanske Crkve Anton La Vey dao je Mansonu svoju podršku.I dok neki promatrači Mansonovo ponašanje svrstavaju pod masovnu medijsku manipulaciju, broj njegovih sljedbenika, mahom bijelci, buntovni teenageri iz predgrađa, iz dana u dan raste. Izdavanjem EP-ja ‘Smells Like Children’ (1995), bend je definitivno postao dio mainstream scene obradom velikog Eurythmics hit singla ‘Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)’.Nakon basiste iz grupe odlazi i gitarista Berkowitz a njegovo mjesto zauzima Zim Zum. Njihov slijedeći album iz 1996. godine ‘Antichrist Superstar’ debitirao je na trećem mjestu na top listi pop albuma, a u Classic Rock Magazinu uvršten je među trideset najbolje koncipiranih albuma svih vremena.Njegovi su koncerti regularno pod povećalom raznih građanskih aktivista, a njegova glazba tema je napada vrlo široke populacije, od desničara do raznih religijskih frontova. I dok se jedni pitaju je li Manson prodao dušu vragu ili je jednostavno samo prodao dušu (dobrom marketingu), Manson se slika za naslovnicu Rolling Stonea, a njegova biografija je na vrhu top liste prodavanosti.Glamom inspiriran ‘Mechanical Animals’ uslijedio je 1998. godine a album je pratila Last Tour on Earth turneja. Album je radi covera na kojemu je Manson prikazan kao goli vanzemaljac povučen s mnogih prodajnih mjesta diljem svijeta. U Japanu navodno nije povučen iz prodaje radi golotinje, već radi šest prstiju na Mansonovoj ruci. Inače, album je debitirao na prvom mjestu Billboardove top liste albuma 1998. godine.‘Holy Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death)’ objavljen je 2000. godine. Turneja je uslijedila 2001. godine, a u svibnju 2003. godine objavljen je ‘The Golden Age of Grotesque’, koji je tjednima bio na samome vrhu top lista albuma i završio na listi top ten albuma mnogih poznatih glazbenih kritičara. U travnju 2004. godine pojavio se album ‘Lunch Boxes and Choklit Cows’, posvećen Marilyn Mansonu & the Spooky Kids što je ime Mansonovog ranijeg banda. Manson se povodom tog izdanja našao na sudu i izborio sudsku zabranu korištenja artworka na koji ima autorska prava.Krajem rujna te godine objavljena je kompilacija njegovih najvećih hitova “Lest We Forget” s koje je hit singl bila obrada velikog hita grupe Depeche Mode “Personal Jesus”.
