23 Skidoo - glazba i misterij

Internet, koliko s jedne strane zamoran, toliko s druge koristan, mnogostruko koristan usudio bih se reci. Ne samo da nudi prgrst informacija, vec i taj vrli mrezni svijet kao “buvlja pijaca” omogucuje nabavku knjiga, glazbe, filmova.... Ne moram vam previse o tome pisati, mislim da vas ne trebam tome niti educirati, jer svi vi koji ovo kojim slucajem citate, mozda i educiraniji ste od mene.
Dakle, konkretno, o cemu je rijec? Zelim naglasiti koliko su danas programi koji omogucuju download svega sto covjek pozeli (no dobro, ne bas, svega), ali vecine toga, vrijedni divljenja. Pocev od stripova, glazbe, cijelih diskografija, filmskih materijala, i to onih koje je prakticki tesko pronaci, ili pak, koje smo u nemogucnosti kupiti. Isto tako velika su pomoc svi oni alati koji nam omogucuju da DivX filmove ili mp3-ce prebacujemo u DVD ili audio formate, ili kakvi vec jesu, da u njima uzivamo.
I sjetih se davnih pocetaka 80-ih, kad sam bio naklonjen nekom punk-u, industrial, uglavnom alternativnoj glazbi. Kad sam slusao kao lud petkom (ili subotom?) na Mariborskom "Radio Student-u" alternativce poput Laibach-a, 23 Skidoo, Last Few Days i koga sve ne. I uzivao u tome, ali nisam mogao dobaviti, eventualno snimajuci na kasetu.
23 Skidoo, vrlo neuobicajen bend, alternativci, eksperimentatori, geniji inovacije raznolikih stilova, sklada i nesklada, dovedenog do prakticki slusnog savrsenstva, bend koji mi je ostao duboko ukorijenjen u sjecanje, dok nisam upravo zahvaljujuci internetu, dosao u posjed prakticki kompletne diskografije. Long Live Internet.
Zasto ovaj blog opterecujem tim bandom, zasto sam toliko fasciniran. Ne nije rijec samo o glazbi, koju jednostavno morate cuti (osim ako vasi glazbeni dosezi ne prelaze stvaralastvo O. Dragojevica kao svojeg maximuma). Ako ste pak otvoreni prema necem neobicnom, ako vam se Front242 ili Cabaret Voltaire cine intrigantnima i pruzaju vam zadovoljstinu, tad poslusajte decke iz 23 Skidoo.
Ali, kad bi samo stao na slovu 23 Skidoo, kao bandu kojeg volim.... no ovo se proteze mmogo dalje i mnogo dublje. Ne znam tko je kome uzeo ideju, ili je 23 Skidoo kao naziv za band izabran iz suste zelje za samo jednim originalnim imenom?... ne znam, ali 23 Skidoo, odnosno broj 23 veze se uz misticnost, okultno, zavjere, broj koji je utjecao i utjece na promjene u svijetu i na cudne dogadjaje, cesto tragicne....
Stoga vam prilazem neke linkove i dijelove tekstova, te definicije koje se vezu uz 23. A osobito definiciju 23 Skidoo pojma, kao i ponesto o samom bandu 23 Skidoo.
Trenutno mi se u glavi vrti uz pomoc slusalica kompilacijski album “The gospel comes to new guinea” Svakako preporucujem kao i svaki njihov album.

O POJMU 23 Skidoo:
23 skidoo (sometimes 23 skiddoo) is an American slang popularized in the early Twentieth Century (first appearing before World War I and becoming popular in the Roaring Twenties). It generally refers to leaving quickly. One nuance of the phrase suggests being rushed out by someone else. Another is taking advantage of a propitious opportunity to leave, that is, "getting out while the getting is good."
Wentworth and Flexner describe it as "perhaps the first truly national fad expression and one of the most popular fad expressions to appear in the U.S." There are several stories suggesting the origin of the phrase, none that have been universally accepted.
Webster's New World Dictionary derives skiddoo (with two d's) as probably from skedaddle, meaning "to leave", with an imperative sense. The "23" part of the phrase has a wide diversity of explanations. Among them:
• New York City's Flatiron Building, on 23rd Street, is shaped as a triangle. This shape caused frequent winds, which would stir ladies' skirts, revealing ankles which, in the early years of the Twentieth Century, were seldom seen in public.
Rogues would loiter around the Flatiron Building hoping for glimpses. Local constables, shooing such rogues away, were said to be giving them the 23 Skidoo.
• An early 1900s Death Valley town had 23 saloons (many basically tents). A visit to all, going 23 skidoo, meant having a really good time.
• Sydney Carton, the protagonist of A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens, is the 23rd person sent to the guillotine in a series of executions in a popular stage production of the book.
• Eric Partridge, in his Dictionary of Catch Phrases, suggests that 23 was an old Morse code signal used by telegraph operators to mean "away with you." (The same story accounts for 30 as "end of transmission", a code still used by modern journalists, who place it at the end of articles as a sign to editors. However, the Western Union 92 code, which is the source of 30 and other numbers like 73 and 88 still used in Amateur radio, lists 23 as "all stations copy".)
• Aleister Crowley titled the 23rd chapter of his 1913 book, The Book of Lies "Skidoo".

23 Skidoo is a British band playing a fusion of industrial, experimental, post-punk, alternat[/LINK]ive dance, rock music.
Formed in 1979 by Fritz Catlin, and brothers Johnny and Alex Turnbull, 23 Skidoo had interests in martial arts, Burundi and Kodo drumming, Fela Kuti, The Last Poets, William Burroughs, as well as the emerging confluence of industrial, post-punk and funk, heard in artists such as A Certain Ratio, Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire, The Pop Group and This Heat.
Prvijenac sastava, odlican album 7 Songs, kritika ga je ocijenila (ali ne samo i ona) svojevrsnim remek djelom. Svakako preporucujem.
Their first 7", "Ethics" was released in 1980, followed by the "Last Words" 7", produced by Stephen Mallinder and Richard H. Kirk from Cabaret Voltaire. Their debut album, Seven Songs, was released in 1982 and is said to evoke the claustrophobic humidity of an African forest. The Tearing Up The Plans EP followed, with the absence on the Turnbull brothers, who were traveling through Indonesia. Guitarist Sam Mills and vocalist Tom Heslop left the band soon after, and with the arrival of bassist Sketch, the lineup remained the same until their disintegration in 2003.
With the Turnbull brothers back from Indonesia, inspired by Gamelan orchestras, the band recruited Aswad's horn section for the "Coup" 12", which featured samples from Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now. It has been alleged that The Chemical Brothers stole the bassline for their "Block Rockin' Beats" track. The Culling Is Coming (1983) and Urban Gamelan (1984) followed, criticised at the time for their shift towards more abstract sounds. 23 Skidoo released no more new material after this, having been evicted from their rehearsal space at Genesis P-Orridge's 'Death Factory', until 2000. A compilation, Just Like Everybody, was released in 1987.

In 1989, with their focus shifting towards Hip Hop, the Turnbull brothers formed the Ronin label, and released material by Deckwrecka, Roots Manuva, and Rodney P amongst others. They signed to Virgin Records in 1991 and were able to build a new studio with their advance. In 2000 they released a self-titled LP, which featured contributions from Pharoah Sanders and Roots Manuva. This was followed by a compilation of singles, The Gospel Comes To New Guinea in 2002, and for the first time on CD, reissues of Seven Songs and Urban Gamelan. In 2003 the Turnbull brothers liquidated the company without paying any royalties to their colleagues.

Kompilacija single albuma "The gospel comes to new guinea" opus magnum je sastava. Radovi nikad prije objavljeni nalaze se na ovome jedinstvenom albumu.
Jos samo za kraj da spomenem. Zasto toliko naglasavam srecu sto sam napokon nakon godina i godina potrage dosao do nekih albuma ovoga fantasticnog benda. Naime u nas je jednostavno nemoguce kupiti ista od njih (osim njihovog novijeg izdanja imena "23 Skidoo"), koliko god trazili i po alternativnim shopovima. Dakle, jedino vam preostaje kupnja online preko weba ili ....
Cudi me jedino cinjenica, da band koji je toliko utjecao na razvoj industrial-a, experimentalne glazbe, post-punka, ukratko, alternativne scene, od kojeg su cak i Chemical Brothers koristili materijal za stvaranje svoje jedne, vrlo popularne "stvari", koji uzivaju veliku reputaciju u svijetu, ostaje nepoznanica na ovim prostorima (mislim globalno), a s druge strane niti njedan izdavac nije pokazao interes za distribucijom. Steta.
Mozda netko na ovaj post reagira, pa mozda uskoro osvane plakat o 23 Skidoo slusaoni u Jabuci ili Mocvari :)
