SPARTAK BEATEN BY LOKOMOTIV
The first leg of the Russian Cup semifinal between FC Spartak Moscow and Lokomotiv Moscow took place in the Lokomotiv stadium. The Red-and-Whites were beaten 0-3.
Football is hard to imagine without defeats. There are games when one team is capable of everything while their rivals can hardly come with anything. This is how things were on the miserable evening of the first leg of the Russian Cup semi-final between Spartak and Lokomotiv.
Both teams started quickly, if not chaotically, into the game. In the opening minutes it seems that the dominance was held by Spartak and Nikita Bazhenov, who appeared in the starting line-up for the first time after a long period, fired a dangerous shot from across the area. The ball went slightly off the target. Several minutes later Bazhenov made a brilliant pass to onrushing Dmitry Torbinsky, but the danger was cleared by Lokomotiv goalkeeper Yakupovich. The game would have continued differently if Spartak managed to realize these opportunities, but this is football.
The situation changed dramatically around the middle of the first half: the hosting side employed active pressing in the midfield. The Red-and-Whites hardly kept possession and scarce attacks could only develop through flank game. The pressure upon the Spartak defense was growing and the first goal came shortly through efforts of Samedov and Sychev. It seemed that this goal would change Spartak's attitude and encourage the players to play more actively, but quite the opposite happened. Spartak's defense, which acted confidently in previous games this season, was in utter confusion and let Lokomotiv score two more goals in the first half. The goal difference could have been greater if it was not for Pletikosa, who performed superb goalkeeping.
In the second half, coach Vladimir Fedotov substituted Aleksey Rebko and Mozart and their positions were taken by Radoslav Kovac. Jeder played the central defender and Artem Dzyuba appeared as the second striker. These changes livened up Spartak's game, but the score let Lokomotiv enjoy full control of the game. Spartak was close to score back as Roman Shishkin hit the bar from a free kick and Yegor Titov stroke right into a defender from five meters after Bystrov's breakthrough on the left flank. The game ended with the score unchanged. “This is football. I believe, of course, that there are still chances to qualify to the final. Otherwise there was no sense about playing", said Vladimir Fedotov after the game."
