The Winter Solstice has always been recognized as a very special time of the year. The Sun is completing its descendent path. And at the very bottom of the abyss, at the moment when the darkness is deepest and the night is longest, we witness the birth of the new year’s light: the cycle of life begins anew. Our religious celebrations, our traditional customs, our very measurement of time: everything is coordinated to the movement of our star—to which we owe life on this planet.
The end of a yearly cycle and the beginning of a new one is a time for reviewing our successes and failures, making new plans, and exchanging greetings and good wishes. I hope you will receive many such wishes, and that you will give even more.
At this time of celebration, I am going to wish you something out of the ordinary. My New Year wish for you has to do with the place within yourself, which I would like you to know better. Please read this message, and if you like it, please share it with others.

Wishing you Silence
I will not wish you “luck,” because people interpret “luck” in many diffferent ways. Instead, I wish you Silence, because silence is the place from which happiness is created. My wish for you is that your own wishes will lead you to the Silence that resides in the deepest realm of your consciousness. There, you will find everything you need to be happy.
I could wish you peace. (Yes, I do wish you that with all my heart.) But how can you reach peace if you do not know the Silence that is within you? Therefore, I wish you to meet this silence. Let the year ahead bring silence into your life. Because peace follows Silence, as morning follows the Sun.
If only my wish could give you the strength to overcome all the difficulties that will come your way! If so, my deepest wish for you would be just that! But no one can give you strength if you do not find it within yourself. Strength is only to be found in that silent place deep in your soul—that place which you tend to stubbornly avoid. Therefore, this year I wish for you to find that place. When you do that, you will become invincible; all obstacles will become just one small thread in the rich fabric of your accomplishments.
It did not even cross my mind to wish you money, because money will not make you happy. Instead, I wish you the affluence of silence, because silence is the place from which everything comes into being. The whole Universe is created from Silence, so how could it be that your needs could be forgotten? Seek Silence. Seek the silent source within, and everything else will be given to you.
I could wish you wisdom, because you will surely need it. But I will not do that either, because your wisdom comes from the silent center within you. It is impossible to be wise without knowing this Silence. So rather seek Silence, and your quest itself will be the sign that wisdom has found you!
Do you wish for joy? If you cut down a tree, what joy can you have in its flowers and fruit? The Silence within you is your root. I wish that you may never lose contact with this root. I wish you Silence, which is living and vibrant. If you take care to attend to it every day, all your fruit will sing the song of joy.
It would be good to wish you abundant health. But this is an empty wish if you yourself do not understand where your health comes from. The same root of Silence that feeds your accomplishments and brings you joy also feeds and sustains your body. Do not do to your body what a root would not do to the branches it nourishes. Listen to your body, because it is constantly whispering to you the words of health. I wish you enough silence to allow you to hear them!
And, finally, the greatest of all wishes: the wish that love be in your heart. Perhaps you did not notice—or perhaps I confused you—but that is what I have been speaking of all this time. Because what is love, if not your deepest root? How can we call love by anyone’s specific name if this love does not go so deep that it reaches the very source connecting all the people and all the beings in this world? For your loving to be pure, clear, honest, and real, you need to know the Silence of your own heart. From this place—from the unfathomable depths of the human soul—spring forth happiness, strength, health, affluence, wisdom, peace, and joy. That source, that Silence, is the Love without name. For remember: Love—like Truth, Beauty, or Compassion—has no name, gender, race, or nationality. Love is the force with which we unite the most when we come to know Silence.
That is why, from the bottom of my heart, I wish you just this: Silence.
