Former Pink Floyd singer/guitarist Syd Barrett, has passed away at the age of 60. He left the band at the pinnacle of his career in 1968 after suffering a drug-induced breakdown. He died in his Cambridgeshire home last Friday (July 7) from cancer.
Born Roger Keith Barrett January 6, 1946, Syd was a contributing member on Pink Floyd's The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967) and A Saucerful of Secrets (1968). After leaving the band, he lived in the basement of his mother Winfred's home, in which he boarded up the windows to avoid the press and fans. Other than that, he recorded two solo records: The Madcap Laughs and Barrett, as well as Opel, a compilation album made up of rare and alternate material.
Syd was not only a visionary musician whose career ended when he took too much LSD ... SHINE ON YOU CRAZY DIAMOND!
