Many know the name Ernesto “Che” Guevara as a revolutionary that helped Fidel Castro into power in the ‘60s. What most people don’t know is his life before he became a revolutionary. MOTORCYCLE DIARIES is an excellent road trip that explores the life of a young asthmatic doctor in training as he and his friend explore the South American countryside. It’s an involving story that shows how a young Che Guevara had his ideas of giving power to the people shaped.
MOTORCYCLE DIARIES opens with two friends setting out on a cross country journey on the back of a beat up Norton 500 motorcycle. Ernesto Guevara de la Serna (Gael Garcia Bernal) is a straight laced naïve doctor in-training, while his friend Alberto Granado (Rodrigo De La Serna) is more relaxed and willing to make the most of life. Both want to see as much of their beloved country as they can before settling down into their comfortable medical careers.
Their journey will take them through different countries and will take them from their normally comfortable life and force them to examine what life is like for most people in South America. What begins as an idealistic journey to discover South America, ends with a both people being changed.
Walter Salles directs MOTOCYCLE DIARIES perfectly. The film plays as both a buddy film as well as taking on a National Geographic documentary feel. The journey of two men on a motorcycle could have been a very boring and stiff affair extolling the virtues of Che as he transforms. What Salles does instead is present an engrossing story about personal growth of two individuals and transformation. From this film, it’s not difficult to see how Che would grow into a revolutionary. In fact it would be interesting to see how his life would have turned out if he hadn’t made this journey.
Screenwriter Jose Rivera has done a wonderful job taking the personal diaries of Che Guevara and transforming them into a psychological exploration of what happened to the young Guevara. He manages to balance the humor of the story with the serious plight of the common man in South America. The film never tries to hit you over the head with its message.
MOTOCYCLE DIARIES is a fascinating journey that explores a country and looks at the psychology of one of the most controversial revolutionaries of the 20th century. With beautiful cinematography, excellent acting and a wonderful story, MOTOCYCLE DIARIES is one of the best films of the year.
