Madonna sa svojom pjesmom Mother and Father sa albuma American Life drži 15.(pala sa 6. mjesta) mjesto na Billboardovoj top listi dance-club pjesama. Madonna je prva umjetnica u povijesti ove ljestvice koja drži 7 top hitova sa jednog albuma!
Madonna je tu pjesmu posvetila svojoj majci koja je umrla kad je imala samo 5 godina, 1963. Ožiljak koji je nastao smrću majke nikada nije zarastao, ali je utjecao da se Madonna uplaši vlastite slabosti. Kao sasvim mala je odlučila da joj se više neće ponoviti - da bude slaba, nikada. Tri godine poslije porodične tragedije, Tony Ciccone započinje romantičnu vezu sa Joan Gustafson, jednom od mnogobrojnih domaćica koje su radile u kući. Na veliko razočarenje djece, njih dvoje će se ubrzo vjenčati. Život svakog od nas čine kontradiktorna osećanja. Tako je i Madonna istovremeno bila bijesna na svog oca, koji je nastavio sa svojim životom, a očajnički je željela da je prihvati i podrži.
