KOTA KINABALU: A schoolgirl is missing as heavy rains over the weekend continue to wreak havoc in Sabah’s south-western Sipitang and neighbouring Tenom districts.
A secondary school student, Caroline Murang, 16, went missing after a four-wheel drive vehicle she was in got swept away in the fast-flowing Meligan river last Friday.
Caroline was among nine boarders from SMK Padang Berampah in Sipitang who were returning to their homes for the school holidays when their vehicle apparently stalled in the middle of the river and was swept away.
Eight other students and the driver managed to swim to safety and were all taken to the Sipitang hospital for observation before going back to their families.
Flood havoc: A fallen tree blocking a section of the railway track between Tenom and Beaufort.“We are continuing our search but bad weather is hindering our efforts,” said Sipitang fire and rescue chief Abdul Nuin Yusuf.
In Tenom and Beaufort, rail services between the two districts were disrupted following landslips and soil erosions.
The Tenom railway station and seven villages were also hit by flash floods.
Tenom-based Sabah Railway Department technician Jasmin Sapar said incessant rain since Friday had triggered landslips and works were underway to clear the areas.
Beaufort district officer Mohd Sidek Abdul Jubar said residents from two villages were evacuated.
He urged villagers to evacuate if floodwaters rose.
