With innovation as the wing, a new global benchmark for PEEK materials is created

Reporter: Li Chen | March 14, 2025
In a modern industrial park in Lanxi, Jinhua, Zhejiang, the reporter met Mr. Chen Mingyuan, the founder and CEO of Zhejiang BW Industrial Co., Ltd. This national high-tech enterprise focusing on the research and development and production of high-performance PEEK (polyetheretherketone) materials is moving from "Made in China" to "Made in China" with 18 years of technological accumulation and global layout.
From OEM to independent brand: the birth of a "material revolution"
"In 2010, when we OEMed PEEK seals for a German automobile giant, we found that the core technology was always controlled by others." Chen Mingyuan recalled. PEEK, as "plastic gold", is resistant to high temperature, corrosion and biocompatible. It is widely used in aerospace, medical implants and new energy fields, but at that time 90% of the domestic market relied on imports.
Faced with technical barriers, BW Industry jointly established a joint laboratory with Zhejiang University and the Ningbo Institute of Materials, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and invested 15% of its annual revenue in research and development. In 2018, the company broke through the "continuous extrusion molding" technology, launched the first domestic medical-grade PEEK material, and passed FDA certification. "At that time, similar products abroad were priced at more than 10,000 yuan per kilogram, and our products directly lowered the price by 40%." Technical Director Dr. Zhang Lei added.
Dialogue transcript: The "hard-core gene" behind innovation
Reporter: How did BW transform from a foundry to an industry leader?
Chen Mingyuan: The key lies in "walking on two legs" - technological breakthroughs and brand awakening. In 2015, we established our own brand "BW PEEK", but the initial transformation was difficult. It was not until 2022 that we reached a strategic cooperation with the German Hubner Group and relied on its global channels that our products really entered the European high-end market.
Reporter: I heard that BW's R&D team spent 3 years to conquer the "ultra-low wear PEEK composite material"?
Chen Mingyuan (laughing): Yes! At that time, the customer required the material to maintain stable performance in an environment of -60 to 260. We tested hundreds of formulas and finally achieved a breakthrough through nano-ceramic particle modification technology. This material has now become the core component of high-speed rail bearings, and its life span has increased by 3 times.
Full industry chain layout: from "material supplier" to "solution expert"
In BW's smart workshop, reporters saw PEEK raw material particles being transformed into drone parts, artificial joints and semiconductor carriers through precision injection molding machines. "We are not only a material manufacturer, but also provide customized solutions for customers." Marketing Director Lin Yue introduced. For example, in response to the lightweight demand of new energy vehicle battery packs, BW has developed a flame-retardant PEEK composite material to help customers lose 30% weight and pass UL94 V-0 certification.
On the company's honor wall, qualifications such as "National Specialized New Little Giant" and "Zhejiang Science and Technology Progress First Prize" are shining. In 2023, BW won the "Global Medical Technology Innovation Award" for its "3D Printed PEEK Skull Prosthesis" project, and its products have benefited more than 5,000 patients.
Globalization blueprint: Let Chinese materials define the future
"BW's ambition is not just to replace imports." Chen Mingyuan pointed to the world map in the exhibition hall - the Stuttgart R&D center in Germany, the Houston application laboratory in the United States, and the Southeast Asian production base constitute a global network. In 2024, the company's overseas revenue accounted for 35%, and it cooperated with Tesla to develop humanoid robot joint materials.
When asked about future plans, Chen Mingyuan revealed: "We are developing degradable PEEK materials, which are expected to be available in 2026. BW's mission is to redefine the relationship between humans and technology with innovative materials."
At the end of the interview, the setting sun sprinkled on the PEEK raw material particles through the workshop glass, reflecting a metallic luster. These seemingly ordinary black particles will soon become space probe parts, bone plates implanted in patients, or the "nerves" of the next generation of AI devices - just like the ultimate core of the BW story: using materials as pens to write future civilizations.
