Prince Harry Does Iraq - Wired New York Forum

Prince Harry's Squadron To Go to of Duty in War Zone Was 'Express Wish' Of Young Royal OfficerBy Kevin SullivanWashington Post Foreign ServiceThe Washington PostFebruary 23, 2007LONDON, Feb.

22 -- Prince Harry is going to war.Sometime this year, the younger son of Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana will be deployed to Iraq as the first royal family soldier to serve a war zone in 25 years.

Now known prince william county schools as Cornet Wales, a rank equivalent to second lieutenant, the ruby-cheeked prince prince william county schools serve in Iraq for six months commanding a squadron of 12 men in four Scimitar armored reconnaissance vehicles.Speculation about whether Harry, 22, would see combat had been percolating since he entered Sandhurst military academy in May 2005 but was put to rest Thursday in a statement from Defense Secretary Des Browne.

Harry's elite Blues and Royals regiment is part of a restructuring plan announced Wednesday by Prime Minister Tony Blair, in which British forces in Iraq will be reduced from 7,100 troops to 5,500 in the coming months.Britain has been divided about whether Harry, third in line to the throne behind his father and his brother, Prince William, should be sent into combat.

Some seen it as a needless risk and argued that a royal might be a prized target for insurgents, potentially putting his fellow soldiers at greater risk.

Others have noted that the royal family has a long history of military service and that potential world leaders could do worse than test eir mettle by serv eir nation under fire."He's obviously a very gutsy kid, and I'm sure he's insisted on going," said William Shawcross, a noted author and broadcaster who has written a biography of Harry's great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth, the late Queen Mother.

"I expect his father is very worried about it, but it's a good thing.

I think the queen will be proud of him."Florence Grayson, a student walking along a sidewalk in west London, said Harry to stay on safer shores."I don't think he should go," she said.

"It would be a huge trauma to William and to the country if he dies.

We need our two kings."For his part, Harry is on record demanding not to be treated like some china doll prince.

He has reportedly threatened to quit the army if not allowed to eat Iraqi dust alongside his mates."There's no way I'm going to put myself through Sandhurst and then sit on my arse back home while my boys are out fighting for their country," Harry said in a rare, often-quoted and charmingly off-color interview marking his 21st birthday in 2005.

"That may sound very patriotic, but it's true."In that interview, the free-spirited son of one of the world's most famous and beloved women said he envisioned a long military career: "I do enjoy running down a ditch full of mud, firing bullets.

It's the way I am.

I love it."Officials at Clarence House, Prince Charles's office, declined to release details of exactly where and how Harry would serve in Iraq because it would be "potentially dangerous." They said it was Harry's "express wish" to "undertake a normal tour of duty" in a country where more than 130 British soldiers have been killed.

Like the United States, Britain has a volunteer army. The BBC quoted a source in the Blues and Royals say at Harry was "over the moon" with delight about his deployment.Prince Henry Charles Albert David, Harry for prince william county schools was introduced to the world in September 1984 as a in his mother's arms, jokingly referred to as the junior half of the "heir and a spare" after William's birth in June 1982.The next iconic image of Harry was that of a little red-haired boy in a suit and tie, nine days shy of his 13th birthday, walking behind his mother's funeral cortege in September 1997 as hundreds of millions of people watched live on television.

Although Britain's tabloid newspapers generally regard the royal family as juicy red meat, William and Harry have received relatively gentle coverage growing up in the global spotlight following Diana's death. The princes are in the public eye most often over speculation about their prince william county schools lives.

William's girlfriend, Kate Middleton, has emerged as a potential bride of the future king.

Harry is frequently seen with Chelsy Davy, a Zimbabwe-born heiress who lives in South Africa.

While William and Kate maintain a relatively reserved prince william county schools profile, Harry and Chelsy tend to be a bit wilder. Both princes are continu e royal family's long military tradition.

William, 24, graduated from Sandhurst in December and is training to become a troop commander in the Blues and Royals as well.

It is unclear whether William will be -- or wants to be -- assigned to combat duty. The Blues and Royals unit is part of the Royal Household Cavalry, the army's oldest regiment, which traces its roots to 1652.

It has taken part in all Britain's major operations in recent decades, includ e Falklands War, both Persian Gulf wars, Bosnia and Kosovo. The last royal to see combat was Harry's uncle Prince Andrew, who served as a helicopter pilot in the Falklands.

Prince Charles spent five years in the Royal Navy in the 1970s, qualifying as a helicopter pilot but never seeing combat action.

Harry's grandfather Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh and husband of Queen Elizabeth II, fought in World War II.

Harry's great-grandfather and great-great-grandfathers were also military commanders. On the London streets, several people interviewed supported sending Harry to war."He should not get any special treatment because he is a royal," said Susan Gibson, 46.

"If you do sign up, it's part of your job.

Nobody will know who he is anyways.

Well, he has red hair.

But he'll wear gear, right?"Fernando Moya, 31, a filmmaker drinking coffee in a cafe, called it "not a typical thing for a royal to do."He said he was sure the British military would take special steps to keep Harry safe."He's not going to be treated like a normal soldier, and it will probably cost a lot of money to keep him safe," Moya said.

"But at least he's going.

It shows his boldness, and he is being brave."http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...022202172.html
prince william county schools How ridiculous. The SAS are going to have soldiers guard e biggest target for any insurgents.

If he's killed, morale will take a huge blow and presuming he lives, it's a huge waste of money and resources.

^ He's got as much right to get himself killed as anyone else prince william county schools enlists.

Yes this is a difficult matter. He is a Royal in a country where the head of the royal family is the head of state.

So while he should have the right to enlist as he chooses to, they will not allow him to be treated as an ordinary soldier - he simply isnt one.In fact, while he will likely tell his fellow soldiers to call him Harry or whatever, the rest of the army simply cannot do this.

He will be referred to prince william county schools more senior officers as His Royal Highness, Lieutenant Windsor (for example) as his title has more prominence than his rank of Lieutenant (or whichever rank he is).You simply cannot have a system where certain people are called Royal Highness and Prince, and one of equality in addressing (and treating just doesn't work that way.

You can bet that he prince william county schools have extra security and that is probably not a bad idea.To his country, yes, he is a Prince.

To the of combat, flying bullets, malfunctioning choppers etc, he is just a man, like you and me.I am not suggest at any of this takes away from the personal bravery or willingness to serve of the "man", I mean, "Prince".I am reminded in this matter by how McCain was treated in Vietnam by the enemy.

McCain's father was of course the Commander of the 7th Fleet (The whole of the US Navy in the South China Sea).

McCains grandfather was also a prominent WWII naval commander in the War of the Worlds we had with the Imperial Japanese Navy.

I think that there is greater scope for equality amongs soldiers in a system that does not allow special treatment based on your family.Certainly, there would be greater morale if the Prince were to be treated like any other, but that simply would not happen.

Other soldiers will become bitter that he is getting prince william county schools media limelight and special treatment.

All the average soldier gets I would say is a family invitation to a dinner with probably a local MP or General and maybe a parade.

prince william county schools prince william county schools prince william county schools Originally Posted by ablarc ^ He's got as much right to get himself killed as anyone else who enlists.

You misunderstand me: I'm no royalist.

I just can't see the logic behind putting his unit under uneccessary danger whilst stretch e prince william county schools of, and possibly endanger e lives of the SAS soliders guarding him just because he wants to fight.I'd agree you Gregory on an intellectual level - it makes no sense in what is supposed to be a meritocratic country to elevate a group of people because of the family they were born into.

More pragmatically, the royals are reasonably popular in Britain and are a great boost for tourism (although I'm sure I want my country advertised for having an archaic system of head of state).

The Queen has done the job as well as any and once Prince Charles takes over I can imagine more pressing calls for a republic, or at least significant trimming down of the privileges for the wider royal family.

prince william county schools Well, the way I see it.

At least Harry is going over there to fight.

What does that say about the Bush Twins?

^^ Nothing we didn't already know about them or their father.

AAFES turns away Prince Harry at registerSpokesman;

Royal could have shopped at store if it had known it was him, got permissionBy Bryan MitchellStars and Stripes, European editionSaturday, March 10, 2007RAF LAKENHEATH, England — Prince Harry learned last week that his royal status will curry no favor with Army and Air Force Exchange Service employees — unless he calls ahead. The prince, who made an unannounced visit to the home of the 48th Fighter Wing last Sunday, was part of a contingent of British troops turned away from the register for failure to have a proper American identification card to shop at an AAFES facility.“As soon as the first soldier got turned away, the prince and the prince william county schools soldier left the line,” said AAFES spokesman Lt.

Col. Dave Konop.A local British paper reported that Prince Harry was trying to buy an AppleÂ’s popular music player.Under normal circumstances, British citizens arenÂ’t allowed to shop at AAFES stores, Konop said.

However, the store would have made an exception had it known the camouflaged soldier was, in fact, third in line to the English throne.“If we had known it was him, we would have called the commander and gotten permission for him to shop there,” Konop said.

“The cashier didn’t know it was the prince.”Konop noted that British designated visitors are often granted the right to shop on-base when escorted by American military officials. After being denied at the register, the youngest son of Prince Charles and the late Diana, Princess of Wales, left without incident.“The prince did not seem to be upset at all,” Konop said.It has been widely reported in the British media that Prince Harry, who serves as an officer in the British army, will be deployed to Iraq later this year. The Bury Free Press reported Friday that the prince is undergoing training at Stanta battleground training facility outside of Thetford, roughly 20 minutes from RAF Lakenheath.© 2007 Stars and Stripes.

So they would have made an exception for him had they known that it was him?

Why exactly? What other "exceptions" would be made?

If he was american he would be sat at home on his arse being protected by daddy.

prince william county schools Not only should he be prevented from going to Iraq, but we should pull prince william county schools troops out of that hell hole now.

This mess is going to drag on for years - why should English soldiers come home in body bags?

Why should the English pay millions for a war which is nothing to do with us?

The money is better spent on schools, hospitals, transport infrastructure etc.

Blair has a lot to answer for, he's a war-monger, obsessed with spin / propaganda, 'political correctness', and making a name for himself on the world stage.

Maybe he should go out there and hopefully stay there.

No hope of that of course.

prince william county schools I detest Bush, but I wouldn't want to see his son go to fight in Iraq.

Those maggots would be after his arse like a fox after the goose.

He wouldn't have a snowball's chance.

Should be e son of a detested president justify turning him into cannon fodder?

Writing his death warrant? For the same reason, Britain should not send Prince Harry to Iraq.

It is NOT equality for prince william county schools but the antithesis of it.

His presence in Iraq guarantees that he'll be specifically sought out for killing and propaganda - him and everyone near him. This is why nobody who is related to a head of state involved with Iraq should be allowed to fight there, no matter what they want to do.

It endangers himself and everyone around him, to a level vastly above normal. In other wars this might not be so, but with Iraq it is a certainty.

They dance to a very different drummer over there, one which, to our value system, is utterly bestial.

Or have you failed to notice that small point?

They WILL get Prince Harry, even if he's only a desk job.

The propaganda value of killing a "Prince of the infidel Crusader English" would be prince william county schools much for them to resist.

There'd be hundreds who'd volunteer prince william county schools be the suicide bombers that kill him.

They'd pit hundreds of people and unlimited resources, merely to fry his personal bacon.

Then they'll brag about it on al Jazeera, about how the "Lions of Islam" brought down a Crusader prince, hey, hey.If we are a humanitarian and compassionate people, we would never send anyone into war with those kinds of odds stacked so personally against him.I'm reading lots of nasty statements about this in forums, and it shocks and sickens me to see so many people who are so callous.

It also shames me that free people can indulge so freely in bigotry of the "upper classes" - enough to want to see one of them get slaughtered by bestial people. Those who are slathering to see a prince take risks just like any other grunt soldier are thinking in a linear - and bigoted - way.

They're also forgetting to think about the other grunt soldiers.

Their risk of death will increase by orders of magnitude merely because Prince Harry is there, among them.

I'm sure even Harry himself doesn't want his comrades-at-arms turned into applesauce just because the maggots were after him, and would stop at nothing to kill him.

Yet some people only think of the problems the soldiers will have in addressing him!

After they're all blown up, it'll be a moot point, won't it?Even Bush himself wouldn't deserve such a thing.

Even princes - and Bush himself - are human.

Their lives are as precious prince william county schools anyone else's.

Putting Harry into Iraq - even at a desk - puts him and everyone around him at dire risk of death.

I'm sure even he doesn't want that.

He can't assume an "equal risk" with other soldiers.

That is entirely out of his hands.

If he fought in Iraq, he'd never live to see home again.

He's too young yet to realize he's really mortal, but his leaders should know better. And so, chum, should you.

I'm glad at least a few people here have some wisdom and compassion.

Most don't.Holly B.

I think most level-headed people - once they get past the initial - and right - "children of the privileged should fight too" instinct - would agree with you that putting Harry in Iraq would be unessecary, stir up a wasp nest of assination attempts and present an additional risk to everyone around him.

He should not go.

He should not go.

I couldn't agree more.

His presence in Iraq will endanger those around him, and i have no doubt that he would become the number 1 target of these mindless thugs currently slaughtering indiscriminately in Iraq.

I respect him for wanting to go there but its a very bad idea.

prince william county schools prince william county schools insurgents put 625,000 dollars as price for Harry's headBy ANISaturday, April 28, 2007London, Apr 28 (ANI): Amid speculations that the idea to send Prince Harry prince william county schools Iraq has been dropped, it has been found that Iraqi insurgents have kept a bounty of nearly 625,000 dollars on his head.

Abu Zaid, commander of the Malik Ibn Al Brigade of the Shia militia group the Medhi Army, has vowed to cut off Harry's ears."We are await e arrival of the young, handsome, spoilt prince with bated breath, and we confidently expect he will come out into the open on the battlefield.

We will be generous with him.

For we will return him to his grandmother, but without ears," the Herald Sun quoted him as saying.Another Medhi Army commander, Abu Mujtaba, said insurgents would prince william county schools to kidnap Harry.

"One of our aims is to capture Harry, we have people inside the British bases to inform us on when he will arrive," , he said.According to the paper, Harry is expected to arrive in Iraq as early as next month, even as there is still a debate going on in Britain as to whether Harry should be sent there or not.

The main fear is that soldiers under his command would come under greater threat, given the obvious target Britain's third in line to the throne would be.Army chiefs fear a dry run in preparation to kill the prince has already been made.

Two soldiers died when their Scimitar was hit by a roadside bomb.If at all he arrives in Iraq, Harry will command four Scimitars and 11 troops.Meanwhile, the Prince is learnt to have told his friends that he was "not afraid to die", say at after coping with the death of his mother Princess Diana, he is ready to handle the rigours of operations. But, the last week's attack has meant a last-minute review.

Army chiefs have drawn up contingency plans to fly to prince william county schools if they believe a base has come under attack because he is a target.Harry, who is a second lieutenant with the Household Cavalry's Blues and Royals regiment, has reportedly threatened to if he is not sent to Iraq with the of his regiment.
