This afternoons Rush Limbaugh Show, hosted by Mark Belling, featured a semi-restrained rant by the host against Mike Huckabee. I listened to one segment of the show, as time allowed. According to Belling, other than the two issues of gay marriage and abortion, reading the words of Mike Huckabee is virtually indistinguishable from reading the words of John Edwards. Belling needed only to include Mikes pro-Second Amendment stance, and he would have scored the Howard Dean Trifecta: I am tired of afton fraser to the South and fighting elections on guns, God and gays. I dont mean to sound like Im picking on Belling. Rudy Guiliani said much the same thing with his statement on social issues a few months back: Our party has to get beyond issues like that. Jeffery Lord in the tried a similar tack in a blistering piece today, assailing Huckabee for attacking Reaganomics. So while it does not surprise that there are class warrior Democrats attacking the idea of economic opportunity american spectator greed and promising all manner of ways to pit one group against another, it is startling indeed to hear the following from a Republican presidential apple runner former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee. Lord makes no specific references to Huckabees policy positions, but instead relies on statements by The Club for Growth as the arbiter of true conservatism. Any serious observer of the Republican Primary season understands that the The Club for Growth has been anything but an honest broker with regards to Huckabee specifically, and generally, any Republican who fails to american spectator the small-tent definition of conservatism they espouse. The idea troubles that the nominee of the conservative party could be someone who fails to understand that his apparent scorn for Wall Street could resonate negatively with the almost 50 percent of the American population who are now shareholders because of Ronald Reagan. Does Huckabee really believe that all these millions of people are therefore greedy? That economic growth as exemplified by Reaganomics is nothing more than a show-stopping parade of excess by out of control Middle Americans? If in fact in his heart- of-hearts he has some sort of contempt for the Reagan agenda and the Reagan economic accomplishments that restored America to its place as the shining city on a hill Governor Huckabee will soon find himself doing his best to balance on a stool that is missing a leg. Do Mr. Lord, Mr. Belling, and others actually believe that the Club for Growth represents the 50 percent of Americans who own a small piece of Wall Street in their 401(k)s? Please. The Club for Growth represents The Club for Growth. Their crusade for ideological purity is largely responsible for the loss of the Senate in 2006. If the Club for Growth is such a serious and respected group policy wonks, as Lord suggests, then why havent they successfully answered the leftist mantra of Tax Cuts for the Rich? Answer that and you take the whole Greed issue off the table. There is only one reason that the left trots out that line: It works. If the smartest guys in the room at The Club for Growth cant answer that, american spectator maybe theyre not so smart after all. And, maybe their personal crusade against Mike Huckabee has cost them in credibility in ways that they cannot yet fathom. And maybe, american spectator maybe the middle class, gun-toting, Bible believing, wife-loving, foot soldiers of the Reagan coalition just dont believe the Club for Growth anymore, and couldnt care less about what the American Spectator says, and are just as likely to tell NRO and WSJ to go jump in the lake as not. Try this experiment: Go back just a couple of years and find any Mitt Romney speech concerning the social issues, right to life, defense of marriage, and the right to keep and bear arms. Any of them, it doesnt matter. Now, close you eyes as you listen and you just might think youre listening to &.. John Kerry. Get it? |

im phoning it in, again. the following is from an email i wrote last summer after drinking too much wine. from: me i <3 pinot grigio. from: jc from: me first of all, rules of attraction is NOT a 90s movie, by any means. thats like calling singles an 80s movie. im starting to get pissed at myself for getting so in to defining the cultural significance of eras by some bullshit numerical nonsense. ten years is no more brendan frasier than six years ten days and 2 minutes. its just an artificial marker, made up by humanity in order to simplify our measurement of time. god damn it. im more drunk now than before. second of all, GO is not special because of its quality as a film, but brendan frasier of its ability to sum up a very brief period of time. that being the late 90s. i dont care about what i just said about humans needing ways to simplify bullshit. if you were old enough to have any fucking idea what was going on in the last 3 years of that decade, you know that this movie fucking hits the metaphorical nail on the fergie engaged fucking head. the fact that i like this movie only allows me to see this fact without any personal bias. brain breaking down. smashing pumpkins are on letterman tonight. how many fucking people are in the smashing pumpkins now? judging by the video for the new single, id say 37. and third, go IS a better movie than rules of attraction. MUCH BETTER. let me first say that i saw rules of attraction for the first time shortly after it came out on dvd in 2003, and it depressed me in a way that i cannot even begin to describe, for personal reasons i will not get into. i did not watch the entire movie from beginning to end again until just the other night, and i remembered all the things that were good about it, without the depression that was brought on by my own bullshit. now, in order to explain my preference for GO, we are diving into the realm of intellectual interpretation that i am barely capable of on a good day. and considering my pinot grigio state of mind, id say brendan frasier best course of action would be to simply say, ITS FUCKING BETTER. the only supporting arguments i can provide are that RULES, as i will here on refer to it as because i am too lazy to type out the entire title and yet not to lazy to type out this explanation, is cliche in a way that, after long pause, i cannot describe. like i said, im not good at this shit on a good day, and this isnt a good day. both films do cool shit with sequencing, but in my inexplicable opinion, i greatly prefer GO. that pretty much sums it up. my opinion is beyond explanation, and therefore beyond judgment, and therefore correct. GO is much better than RULES. |

Below are the top 10 rated television programmes for the week of 25-31 December in kennedy center honors UK and the US. Christmas is usually a strange time for ratings in the UK, as this is when faded stars dust themselves off for a Christmas special that invariably kennedy center honors the ratings war. However this year only one show managed to do that, Dawn Frenchs sitcom The Vicar of Dibley winning Christmas day with a figure much lower than even a couple of years ago. Has the kennedy center honors audience fragmented so dramastically (Its a new word)? Or was everyone just watching DVDs and playing with their Wiis? The decline of Christmas day Eastenders from its 25 mil Christmas Heyday is also surprising. Im sure it still commanded about 16 mil a couple of years back. I have a theory that as viewers of the show are dying, they arent being replaced. I know Im right. Anyway, here are the numbers. 1. The Vicar of Dibley, all the pretty horses 12.1 million viewers/47% audience share. 2. Eastenders (Mon), BBC1, 11.02/43% 3. Pirates of the Carribean, BBC1, 10.23/42% 4. Eastenders (Thurs), BBC1, 10.02/43% 5. Coronation Street (Mon), ITV1 9.91/39% 6. Eastenders (Fri), BBC1, 9.68/42% 7. Coronation Street (Wed), ITV1, 9.51/36% 8. Eastenders (Mon 18.30), BBC1 9.43/44% 9. Doctor Who, BBC1, 9.28/38% 10. Emmerdale (Fri), ITV1, 9.03/39% In the US, a new episode of Deal or No Deal won Christmas night for NBC. If you are in the UK, and have never seen the US version, its a totally different show. It moves at a lightning pace, the boxes are opened by models kennedy center honors swimsuits (or did I imagine that?) and its always loud, never quiet. All dramas were in repeats, and comedies just dont make these lists in the US anymore& all the figures seem very low, maybe more people turn off at Christmas in the US, or watch that channel that playes the roaring kennedy center honors Deal or No Deal, NBC, 16.33 million viewers. 2. CSI, kennedy center honors 13.84 million. 3. NBC Sunday Night Football: Green Bay at Chicago, NBC, 13.36 million. 4. NCIS, CBS, 11.88 million. 5. 1 Vs. 100, NBC, 11.76 million. 6. NFL Postgame Show, Fox, 11.06 million viewers. 7. CSI: NY, CBS, 10.57 million viewers. 8. Criminal Minds, CBS, 10.03 million viewers. 9. Kennedy Center Honors, CBS, 9.94 million viewers. (I dont know what this is, and Im not prepared to look it up!) 10. Shark, CBS, 9.72 million. (This may have been a new episode, may explain why it made the top 10) What conclusions can we draw from this comparison? that people will watch anything at Christmas? Maybe. That networks dont try anymore over the festive period? Definitely? That ratings are a surefire sign of quality TV, on both sides of the atlantic? Not bloody likely! |

If you watched What Perez Says on VH1 last night, you probably shit your pants like I did when the Rock of Love 2 commercial came on!! I forgot how much this show changed my life until I remembered Heathers A lot of people look down on this show, but it actually does a lot for society. What other show gives old, beat strippers a chance to rock of love 2 out of retirement and make rock of love 2 money by being sophisticated and modest while being courted by Bret Michaels? On a side note, you just KNOW Brets weaves and make up cost more than Heathers. As well as his fashion-bandanas. Stay tuned for Rock of Love 2, January 13th on VH1! |

The imbroglio begins aol straw poll the last debate; a dispute ensues between Romney and Guiliani; see: Then McCainyes, the honourable Sen. John McCain, a decorated combat veteranblindsides Romney with a brilliant rejoinder: Now suddenly others leap into the fraye.g. the estimable former Sen. Fred Thompson. Hypocrites. People who accuse someone of something, only to turn around and do the same thing themselves. People who lie through their teeth for personal gain. People John McCain and Fred Thompson, writes a peeved and pensive Matt A. in an Act Blog post awkwardly titled Hipocrites francesca lewis 2 (Also Known as John and Fred). (Aside: Imagine for a moment a Romney supporter with either ignorance or audacity enough to refer to anyone else as a hypocrite.) It all started yesterday when Mitt Romney in an attempt to highlight the difference between himself and the more liberal Rudy Giuliani, assured Nevada Republicans that he â€Sstood for the Republican wing of the Republican Party”. Virtually everyone knew he was taking a swipe at Giuliani, yet Giuliani was not the first to respond. Instead, John McCain lashed out at Romney, making the following statement (from The Politico & more rage and urgent remonstrations & more Where I come from, we have a word (a phrase, actually) for this kind of thing. I wont repeat it, because this is a family blog, but for a hint, see the title of this post. Given that, I was going to let it go & begins a typically turbid Evangelicals for Mitt post, reproduced in the American Federalists Romney Ramblings feed, titled P____ contest. But then I saw this from another campaign, and I cant let it pass without comment. Saying Governor Romney ran for Senate to the left of Ted Kennedy in 1994 is just ridiculous & more whining and sniveling & We ask again: What will Romney do?what can Romney do?we mean, beyond all the despairing cries and shrieks of rage among Romneys flaks and surrogatesRomneys own negatives are too high to support a negative campaign. More recently, I bought a pair of behind-the-head Logitech Bluetooth headphones which were of reasonable quality, but not great. The ear pieces were pretty uncomfortable with my glasses too. The last rubik s cube solution was when the band snapped, like giganews flame wars did for many others. There was nothing for it, if I wanted some decent sound and comfort, my trusty pair of ÂŁ10 Sony padded headphones seemed the only way to go, but the long wire was driving me mad. rubik s cube solution I started working on& the Frankenheadphones! Ingredients: A pair of El-Cheapo Tesco-Value headphones for the looks. Theyre nice and black, and sit nicely on the head. Theyre a bit tight so you can mosh without losing them too. Perfect. Awful quality, squeaky, rattly, quiet - but not to worry! The Logitech Bluetooth headphones with the snapped headband. My trusty Sony padded headphones - good sound quality, loud, deep bass! Perfect for techno, rock, classical. Sucks for rap music, but thats not a hardware problem. Preparation: It took a while to get this project working. I started several months ago and slowly progressed through the different stages. First I opened the Logitech headphones. I was as subtle as a toddler with a mallet and tore the plastic to pieces and made a mess of it. I liberated the PCB Bluetooth module intact though and got it working on the speakers outside of the case. Thats where I made my first mistake: I unsoldered all the wires (having made diagrams, that rubik s cube solution fine), and the charging connector which was too big to fit in and I intended to rubik s cube solution But then I didnt have the right tips for the solder iron to solder small wires to the very small contacts on the board. After a lot of hassle I manage to get some wires to stick solidly to the contacts. That was my second mistake. Well get back to that. I then opened the rubik s cube solution headphones, removed the stereo wire and stuffed the Bluetooth module in there, the large battery, ripped the surface-mount on/off switch and soldered a couple of wires to a switch screwed in to the side of the case (through tourblogalerts.blogspot.com hole of the stereo wire to hide it, cunning!), soldered the speakers and tried it. It worked! So far so good. Then I took apart the trusty Sony padded headphones, got the good speakers out, fitted them in the Tesco case in place of the rubbish ones which I dremeled out, held them rubik s cube solution place with obligatory duct tape, fitted the padding on the ear pieces and closed the thing back together. It worked! For a whole 30 minutes I enjoyed high quality wireless music with padded comfort. Then the battery ran out and the second mistake I mentioned bit me in the derriere. The wires soldered to the board to charge the battery were not protected enough and I must have pulled a little too hard while plugging them in and the wires came out& with a rubik s cube solution of the PCB still attached! Ruined! After all that. The rubik s cube solution was ruined. No matter what I tried, the board was beyond repair, I just could not charge the battery anymore. Luckily I was able to procure a replacement pair of broken Logitech headphones from a colleague in exchange for sushi. I rubik s cube solution then open the headphones a lot more carefully this time by unscrewing the case instead of ripping it apart. I did not unsolder the charging connector and decided to fit the board in the headphones with the cumbersome connector instead. Put it all back together, tested, closed it. Tested. Charged it. Took it to work. Victory! Ive been using them all day and they are very comfortable, excellent quality, easy to charge, lasted all day. The only problem I had is that the charging LED is not visible so I cannot tell when they are finished charging; I might have to remedy that. Ive already bought my next wireless victim: Motorola HT820 + PC850 usb adapter, $30. I need to find the good quality headphones to take apart now. See the pictures on flickr. |

Oprah Winfrey is set to produce The Great Debaters directed by and starring Denzel Washington. Now before you panic, this isnt Winfreys first time producing. Shes produced a number of films to include Their Eyes Were Watching God, Halle Berrys project for ABC, a few years back. The movie is based on the true story of an underdog debate team that went on to beat Harvards team. As for Washington, this is his second directorial job following the 2002 henry lowe Antwone Fisher, in which he also served as one of the producers. Written by Robert Eisele and Suzan-Lori Parks, The Great Debaters is based on a true story of Melvin B. Tolson. As a professor at Wiley College in East Texas, he has been inspires by his students to create the college’s first debating team, which successfully conquered Harvard in the national championships. The Great Debaters, which is currently in production, features Washington as Mel Tolson, along with other cast members such as Jermaine Williams as Hamilton Burgess, Nate Parker as Henry Lowe, J.D. Evermore as Captain Wainwright, Justice Leak as Harland Osbourne, Breon Pugh as Wiley Student, Charissa Allen as Benita, and Robert X. henry lowe as Dunbar Reed among others. (thanks, Beatniks) From Invisible Woman: Sorry, but as Homer Simpson would say&.booorrrriiiing. I have as much patience for these Stand and Deliver/Dangerous Minds/Freedom Writers/Whatever That Movie Terrance Howard Was In movies as I do TV remakes. NEWS FLASH! When inner city kids are given the henry lowe resources, materials, attention, focus, and opportunities as surburban or private schools, guess what? They can excel JUST LIKE EVERYBODY ELSE! |

On April 23rd, 2006 three members of the Richardson family, described by neighbours as wonderful were murdered by their twelve year old daughter and a twenty three year old man, Jeremy Steinke. Friends say the two were dating. The daughter has been remanded to a Calgary facility where she can take classes and partake in other programs while she waits for her trial. one missed call alleged boyfriend, Jeremy Steinke has been remanded to a psychiatric facility to see if he is fit to stand trial. A third woman Kacy Danielle Lancaster, 19 and a single mother of one, has been charged as an accessory after the fact for allegedly attempting to get rid of evidence, assist with an alibi and possibly driving the two out of province. She's been released to her mothers care on $25,000 bail. For articles go here I was still stymied as to how this relationship could have even developed. Newer details of the case indicate the two met online, in a goth sub-culture website vampirefreaks.com . The site has since been shut down in the aftermath of the murders. In recent months there has been much written about online predators, pedophiles and stalkers. Including a high profile case of a member of Homeland Security. The Medicine Hat case is a prime example of why The Haunting need to be protected online. This is the worst of worse case scenerio's. The local school has pulled a children's book called Running from the curriculum. A concerned parent pointed out that the goth character may be inappropriate material for the school at this time. One of the features of the book is having students take a black and white picture of themselves and to draw themselves in as a goth character. There is no evidence that this book, written about a brothers attempt to find his runaway goth sister had any impact on the young murder suspect, but its got to make you stop and wonder for a second, is this what they mean by a case of art imitating life or is it life imitating art? The school will substitute the classic The Outsiders for the goth book. Not having read the goth book, I can't comment about its content or character beyond what I've read in the media myself. I am however, a big fan of The Outsiders and think it's an excellent pick for the students to study, especially at this time. It deals with the painful subjects of adolescent alienation, fragmentation of family, the sway of peer pressure and fringe groups. The study of this book, could easily dove tail into a supportive discussion about what these students must be going through right now. Grief, anger, bewilderment, betrayal, fear, apathy. I am concerned this case may contribute to the demonization of Goth culture with anti goth fingers pointing to the the couples involvement in the sub culture. Instead of looking past the window dressing to the heart of the matter. ->Predatory behaviour running rampant in our societies. On one extreme, we have women and girls being plucked bodily off the street, as I've been documenting in my Where Are They? Tag. On the other extreme, we have predators reaching right into the karlaleomov.blogspot.com of our homes without leaving a trace of physical evidence to seduce, manipulate even brain wash their childish victims in a play for power. The only footprints, an IP address if you're lucky. Child porn, encounters with children, corruption and seduction enough to prostitute oneself or even commit murder. I'm afraid to even ponder what other things lurk in cyberspace. It inspires me to begin a collection of online safety links. The Tooth Fairy get to that later. I never knew this family, I never knew this little girl or the man described as her boyfriend, and I don't know who maneuvered who into the murders, but I do know something went terribly wrong with this girl. It will be in all our best interests to learn from this case so we can better protect the children until they can do it for themselves. |

It was the 1950s. Gas was 29¢ a gallon, cigarettes 25¢ a pack, a hospital stay was $35 a day. The Franklin National Bank in New York issued the first credit card, and the Worlds first shopping mall in the U.S. - Seattles Northgate Mall was built. The First Grammy Awards happened, RCAs Color Television sets hit the market, and the films, On the Waterfront, All About Eve and An American in Paris were released. Marilyn Monroe and her husbands Joe DiMaggio and Arthur Miller were pretty big. So were Peanuts, Mad Magazine, Jonas Salk, James Dean, Fidel Castro, Rosa Parks, Billy Graham, the Korean War, and Israel invading the Sinai Peninsula. In the decade of blazers, bermuda shorts, saddle shoes, and sack dresses, writers like James Baldwin, Richard Wright, Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, Lillian Hellman, William Burroughs, Sylvia Plath, Susan Sontag, Maria Irene Fornes, Gary Snyder, J.D. Salinger, Carson McCullers, Flannery OConnor, and Dylan Thomas were all doing their thing. People change and grow. Countries have lives and spirits that change and grow. Would you say America is still in its adolescence? You can tell a lot about a person by the books they read. You can also tell a lot about a culture. In the 1950s, heres what America was reading. 1 9 5 0 s - B E S T S E L L E R S 1. From Here to Eternity, James Jones 1.
