Stainless Steel O Rings

Stainless steel o rings - Real housewives of orange county engagement ring

stainless steel o rings

    stainless steel
  • steel containing chromium that makes it resistant to corrosion

  • In metallurgy stainless steel, also known as inox steel or inox from French "inoxydable", is defined as a steel alloy with a minimum of 10.5 or 11% chromium content by mass. Stainless steel does not stain, corrode, or rust as easily as ordinary steel, but it is not stain-proof.

  • A form of steel containing chromium, resistant to tarnishing and rust

  • (Stainless steels) Steels that are corrosion and heat resistant and contain a minimum of 10% to 12% chromium. Other alloying elements are often present.

    o rings
  • are generally used as dynamic seals for shafts and are available in many different sizes and materials.

  • A gasket in the form of a ring with a circular cross section, typically made of pliable material, used to seal connections in pipes, tubes, etc

  • A small plastic piece, shaped like a donut, which is used to hold the arch wires in the brackets on your teeth.

  • An O-ring, also known as a packing, or a toric joint, is a mechanical gasket in the shape of a torus; it is a loop of elastomer with a disc-shaped cross-section, designed to be seated in a groove and compressed during assembly between two or more parts, creating a seal at the interface.

Parker 316 Stainless Steel Hex Head Plug with Buna N O-Ring, 1/4

The Parker 316 stainless steel plug has a hexagonal head, straight thread, and an O-ring for a tight seal. The plug has a hexagonal head for increased leverage and use with a wrench and is made of stainless steel 316 which is high-strength and more corrosion resistant than stainless steel 304. It also has straight thread for strength, and an O-ring, for forming a tight seal without deforming the metal.
Pipe fittings are components used for connecting, terminating, controlling flow, and changing the direction of piping in many different industries. When purchasing pipe fittings, consider the application, as this will affect material type, shape, size and required durability. Fittings are available threaded or unthreaded, in many shapes, styles, sizes, and schedules (pipe wall thickness).

C.R.K.T. - G.W. Hawk D.O.G. 4515

C.R.K.T. - G.W. Hawk D.O.G. 4515

C.R.K.T. Grant Hawk D.O.G. “Deadbolt Over Grabstep”

The unique appearance of this knife drew me to it the first time I saw it years ago. The D.O.G. Reminds me a bit of a gun in appearance and construction, it also comes with two sets of scales, both resembling gun grips. The whole knife has an “over-built” feel to it (in a good way). The blade is a massive 4 mm thick (compared to most being around 2 mm). The bolt has a huge silver bushing (black on some models) and the lock release mechanism is remnant of a pistol's magazine release. The blade has a giant hole in lieu of a thumb stud for opening. The locking mechanism is somewhat like that of a traditional lockback folder in function, but with a sliding deadbolt release as opposed to a lever button release. The lock is said to be ambidextrous, and if you aren't gentle, it is. I find it much easier to use my thumb and forefinger, one on either side simultaneously to unlock the blade.

The gear/pocket clip: Although it does give a nice, minimalistic appearance, it lacks greatly in function. It is removable, but can only be changed from left to right handed carry, not to standard (tip down) carry orientation . Which is fine by me, I prefer the tip up carry orientation anyway. The clip is very loose, it rattles back and forth in it's setting. The metal clip is held in to a polymer insert with a screw and rubber o-ring. The screw is just a bit smaller than the hole in which it sets allowing the clip to slide back and forth (the polymer insert is held in place by the screw as well, it slides too). On one hand this makes the knife very easy to clip to your pocket. On the other, it's annoying and seems sloppy to me. I bent the clip on mine ever so slightly making it touch the scales of the knife. It doesn't slide back and forth now, but it's a bit more troublesome to clip to your pocket. The clip would be the one ting I'd scrap on the knife. It looks neat, but it's too small for a knife this size. If it's tight it's hard to get clipped and if it's loose you fear it not holding the knife in you pocket.

The knife originally came in plain and combo-serrated versions. With a knife that looks this mean you almost have to go for the combo edge. Given its size and weight, I'd have to say it's mostly a show knife. Don't get me wrong, I know you could use this thing like crazy, it's definitely high quality. But if you need a fairly large, folding work knife, I'd have to favor the M16 Big Dog for functionality. The D.O.G. is definitely a unique knife though, both in appearance and function.

[ Shameless product plug/thing I like disclaimer ]

Here's a new stainless-steel (and significantly-heavier) upgrade from the previous white rubberized version I had; while I quite enjoyed the first one, the strap was grey and was falling apart around the metal face within a year of purchase. I think that part wasn't terribly well thought-out.

I've always seemed to have a thing for rather-goofy, unique watches. I recently hit Fossil's site by accident and noticed they had a new metal version out, and I couldn't resist.

The hour is shown as a digit in its expected position, and the minutes circle around as dark LCD segments.

rolled steel rings - The 2011

The 2011 Report on Seamless Carbon Steel and Alloy Steel Rolled-Ring Forgings Made from Purchased Iron and Steel Excluding Stainless and High-Temperature Forgings: World Market Segmentation by City

The 2011 Report on Seamless Carbon Steel and Alloy Steel Rolled-Ring Forgings Made from Purchased Iron and Steel Excluding Stainless and High-Temperature Forgings: World Market Segmentation by City

This report was created for global strategic planners who cannot be content with traditional methods of segmenting world markets. With the advent of a "borderless world", cities become a more important criteria in prioritizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, or countries. This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports them in terms of their size as a percent of the country where they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Latin America), and the total world market.

In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within a country and the extent to which a city might be used as a point of distribution within its region. From an economic perspective, however, a city does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries. To an economist or strategic planner, a city represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another.

In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for the world's major cities for "seamless carbon steel and alloy steel rolled-ring forgings made from purchased iron and steel excluding stainless and high-temperature forgings" for the year 2011. The goal of this report is to report my findings on the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by a city when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales.

1914 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost wooden coachwork Franklin Mint rear right 2

1914 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost wooden coachwork Franklin Mint rear right 2

In 1884, Henry Royce started an electrical and mechanical business. He made his first car, a two-cylinder Royce 10, in his Manchester factory in 1904, and was introduced to Charles Rolls at the Midland Hotel in Manchester on 4 May of that year. Rolls was proprietor of an early motor car dealership, C.S.Rolls & Co. in Fulham.
In spite of his preference for three or four cylinder cars, Rolls was impressed with the Royce 10, and in a subsequent agreement of 23 December 1904 agreed to take all the cars Royce could make.
During 1906 Henry Royce had been developing an improved six cylinder model with more power than the 30hp. Initially designated the 40/50hp, this was the company's first all-new model. In March 1908 Claude Johnson, Commercial Managing Director and sometimes described as the hyphen in Rolls-Royce, succeeded in persuading Royce and the other directors that Rolls-Royce should concentrate exclusively on the new model, and all the earlier models were duly discontinued. Later renamed the Silver Ghost, the new car was responsible for the company's early reputation with over 6,000 built. Its chassis was used as a basis for the first British armoured car used in both world wars.Powered with a 454 cubic inch L-head, six-cylinder, side valve engine, the Silver Ghost was a mechanical marvel with its aluminum alloy crankcase and a timing drive and ignition that was driven by gears, not chains. The timing gears were made of phosphor bronze and nickel steel, which were ground and polished by hand. The crankshaft itself was ground to an accuracy of .025 on its bearing surfaces and then hand polished to remove any minute scratches left by the grinder. The result was an automobile that ran in complete silence without a puff of smoke – a feat that could not be matched at the time and has never been duplicated since. In 1906, Rolls-Royce produced four chassis to be shown at the Olympia car show, two existing models, a four cylinder 20hp and a six cylinder 30hp, and two examples of a new car designated the 40/50 hp. The 40/50 hp was so new that the show cars were not fully finished and examples were not provided to the press for testing until March 1907.
The car at first had a new side-valve, six-cylinder, 7036 cc engine (7428 cc from 1910) with the cylinders cast in two units of three cylinders each as opposed to the triple two cylinder units on the earlier six. A three speed transmission was fitted at first with four speed units used from 1913. The seven-bearing crankshaft had full pressure lubrication and the centre main bearing was made specially large to remove vibration, essentially splitting the engine into two three cylinder units. Two spark plugs were fitted to each cylinder. The earliest cars had used a trembler coil to produce the spark with a magneto as an optional extra which soon became standard - the instruction was to start the engine on the trembler/battery and then switch to magneto. Continuous development allowed power output to be increased from 48 bhp (36 kW) at 1,250 rpm to 80 bhp (60 kW) at 2,250 rpm. Electric lighting became an option in 1914.
In the golden age of motoring coachbuilders frequently designed cars with bodies that resembles the streamline hulls of boats, “boattails”. However in 1955 two Rolls-Royce enthusiasts discovered the existence of a Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost fitted with a boattail body and, not only was the body boat-shaped or boat-tailed, but was, in fact, a wooden boat. The car had been in Egypt and its past was shrouded in mystery. The restorers learned that the car bore the chassis number 54PB which Rolls-Royce records showed to be a 1914 D series model. It had a four-speed gearbox that Rolls-Royce introduced in 1913 and the engine number 45J from the Derby plant. But, for a while, that’s where its history seemed to end – a chassis leaving the Derby plant in 1914 to a buyer in France.
It was discovered during restoration that the body was made by Carrosserie Schebera-Schapiro, a coachbuilder in Berlin. That company was not formed until after World War 1 implying that the car had a different body between 1914 and the end of the war or that it remained a bare chassis until the wooden body was fitted to it.
From its construction in Germany the car ended up with the royal family in Egypt, once owned by the brother of King Faud and later sold by King Farouk. It was next bought by a British officer who ultimately sold it to the two gentlemen responsible for restoring it. Restoration included sanding and varnishing, renickling trim and replacing upholstery. The car had been driven few miles and mechanically only needed new piston rings on the cast-iron pistons.

Fire and steel!

Fire and steel!

J. David Conrad, Chief Mechanical Officer of the Valley Railroad, has lit what I call the Ring of Fire! Doing so he is sweating off the tire of a steam locomotive wheel. Rather than replacing the whole wheel, railroads long ago adopted the method of a separate tire and wheel. The reverse effort must be done to put the tire back on. The tire was heated to 460 degrees in about 30 minutes and came off with a few swings of the mallet. This wheel set if for the Valley's most recent locomotive No. 3025. No. 3025 is the former Knox & Kane Railroad No. 58, a SY 2-8-2 built by China's Tangshan Locomotive and Rolling Stock Works in July 1989.

The 2009-2014 World Outlook for Seamless Carbon Steel and Alloy Steel Rolled-Ring Forgings Made from Purchased Iron and Steel Excluding Stainless and High-Temperature Forgings

This econometric study covers the world outlook for seamless carbon steel and alloy steel rolled-ring forgings made from purchased iron and steel excluding stainless and high-temperature forgings across more than 200 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-a-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved. This study does not report actual sales data (which are simply unavailable, in a comparable or consistent manner in virtually all of the 230 countries of the world). This study gives, however, my estimates for the worldwide latent demand, or the P.I.E., for seamless carbon steel and alloy steel rolled-ring forgings made from purchased iron and steel excluding stainless and high-temperature forgings. It also shows how the P.I.E. is divided across the world's regional and national markets. For each country, I also show my estimates of how the P.I.E. grows over time (positive or negative growth). In order to make these estimates, a multi-stage methodology was employed that is often taught in courses on international strategic planning at graduate schools of business.

Today's O'bama Mass Extinction

Today's O'bama Mass Extinction

The following is an excerpt from the article “Laying bare the myth of "the left"”, by David Sirota on Salon.com:

In the Obama era, the "the left's" destructive, party-over-principles motivation has become impossible to hide, especially recently.

Behold, for instance, major environmental groups' attitude toward the Gulf oil spill.

We know that before the disaster, President Obama recklessly pushed to expand offshore drilling. More than 3.5 million dollars has been given to candidates by BP over the last 20 years, with the largest single donation, 77,051 dollars, going to Obama, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

We also know that his Interior Department gave British Petroleum's rig a "categorical exclusion" from environmental scrutiny and, according to the New York Times, "gave permission to BP and dozens of other oil companies to drill in the Gulf without first getting required [environmental] permits." Worse, we know that after the spill, the same Interior Department kept issuing "categorical exclusions" for new Gulf oil operations, and Interior Secretary Ken Salazar still refuses "to rule out continued use of categorical exclusions," as the Denver Post reported (heckuva job, Kenny!).

Undoubtedly, had this been the behavior of a Republican administration, "the left's" big environmental organizations would be scheduling D.C. protests and calling for firings, if not criminal charges. Yet, somehow, there are no protests. Somehow, there have been almost no calls for the resignation of Salazar, who oversaw this disaster and who, before that, took $323,000 in campaign contributions from energy interests and backed more offshore drilling as a U.S. senator. Somehow, facing environmental apocalypse, there has been mostly silence from "the left."

But, howsoever, O’bama and Salazar may have set-up the conditions for the Oil Spill they were not to be physically available for the actual execution of the Spill in the Gulf of Mexico. That was left up to their campaign contributors BP, Haliburton and the rest of dummies who will invariably qualify for the $75 million dollar federal limit on liability with respect to oil spills.

For information on that I recommend the following article titled “final test would have signaled seal trouble, Team sent home before explosion” published Thursday, May 20, 2010 By David Hammer Staff writer of The Times-Picayune [dhammer@timespicayune.com or 504.826.3322.] that reads as follows:

BP hired a top oilfield service company to test the strength of cement linings on the Deepwater Horizon's well, but sent the firm's workers home 11 hours before the rig exploded April 20 without performing a final check that a top cementing company executive called "the only test that can really determine the actual effectiveness" of the well's seal.

A spokesman for the testing firm, Schlumberger, said BP had a Schlumberger team and equipment for sending acoustic testing lines down the well "on standby" from April 18 to April 20. But BP never asked the Schlumberger crew to perform the acoustic test and sent its members back to Louisiana on a regularly scheduled helicopter flight at 11 a.m., Schlumberger spokesman Stephen T. Harris said.

At a few minutes before 10 p.m., a belch of natural gas shot out of the well, up a riser pipe to the rig above, igniting massive explosions, killing 11 crewmembers and sending millions of gallons of crude oil into the Gulf. The rig's owner, Transocean, blames failed cement seals, installed by Halliburton, for the disastrous blowout.

But while politicians and media have focused on the finger-pointing by BP, Transocean and Halliburton executives in congressional hearings over the past 10 days, Halliburton's representative at those hearings, Tim Probert, has quietly provided some clues about what might have gone wrong.

First, he went into detail in two committee hearings May 11 about the tests that were done to check his company's cement job -- called positive and negative pressure tests -- and a third test that BP never asked for. That test is called a "cement bond log," which records data collected from wires run down the well to measure sounds that indicate whether there are any weaknesses or spaces in the cement.

Probert told a Senate committee last week that the cement bond log is "the only test that can really determine the actual effectiveness of the bond between the cement sheets, the formation and the casing itself."

Gregory McCormack, director of the Petroleum Extension Service at the University of Texas, called the cement bond log the "gold standard" of cement tests. It records detailed, 360-degree representations of the well and can show where the cement isn't adhering fully to the casing and where there may be paths for gas or oil to get into the hole.

I'd always wanted an opal ring, and I still just love watching the stones change in the light. I have no idea when or where it's from, just that it was a perfect fit, perfect color, and went perfectly with my watch. It was absolutely perfect for me!

To its right is my silver poesie-ring from Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, a replica of one found on the grounds. It says "Pences Pour Moye Du", translating to "Think of Me, God Willing" in old French.

Colosseum
Following, a text, in english, from the Wikipedia the Free Encyclopedia:
The Colosseum, or the Coliseum, originally the Flavian Amphitheatre (Latin: Amphitheatrum Flavium, Italian Anfiteatro Flavio or Colosseo), is an elliptical amphitheatre in the centre of the city of Rome, Italy, the largest ever built in the Roman Empire. It is considered one of the greatest works of Roman architecture and Roman engineering.
Occupying a site just east of the Roman Forum, its construction started between 70 and 72 AD[1] under the emperor Vespasian and was completed in 80 AD under Titus,[2] with further modifications being made during Domitian's reign (81–96).[3] The name "Amphitheatrum Flavium" derives from both Vespasian's and Titus's family name (Flavius, from the gens Flavia).
Capable of seating 50,000 spectators,[1][4][5] the Colosseum was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles such as mock sea battles, animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles, and dramas based on Classical mythology. The building ceased to be used for entertainment in the early medieval era. It was later reused for such purposes as housing, workshops, quarters for a religious order, a fortress, a quarry, and a Christian shrine.
Although in the 21st century it stays partially ruined because of damage caused by devastating earthquakes and stone-robbers, the Colosseum is an iconic symbol of Imperial Rome. It is one of Rome's most popular tourist attractions and still has close connections with the Roman Catholic Church, as each Good Friday the Pope leads a torchlit "Way of the Cross" procession that starts in the area around the Colosseum.[6]
The Colosseum is also depicted on the Italian version of the five-cent euro coin.
The Colosseum's original Latin name was Amphitheatrum Flavium, often anglicized as Flavian Amphitheater. The building was constructed by emperors of the Flavian dynasty, hence its original name, after the reign of Emperor Nero.[7] This name is still used in modern English, but generally the structure is better known as the Colosseum. In antiquity, Romans may have referred to the Colosseum by the unofficial name Amphitheatrum Caesareum; this name could have been strictly poetic.[8][9] This name was not exclusive to the Colosseum; Vespasian and Titus, builders of the Colosseum, also constructed an amphitheater of the same name in Puteoli (modern Pozzuoli).[10]
The name Colosseum has long been believed to be derived from a colossal statue of Nero nearby.[3] (the statue of Nero itself being named after one of the original ancient wonders, the Colossus of Rhodes[citation needed]. This statue was later remodeled by Nero's successors into the likeness of Helios (Sol) or Apollo, the sun god, by adding the appropriate solar crown. Nero's head was also replaced several times with the heads of succeeding emperors. Despite its pagan links, the statue remained standing well into the medieval era and was credited with magical powers. It came to be seen as an iconic symbol of the permanence of Rome.
In the 8th century, a famous epigram attributed to the Venerable Bede celebrated the symbolic significance of the statue in a prophecy that is variously quoted: Quamdiu stat Colis?us, stat et Roma; quando cadet colis?us, cadet et Roma; quando cadet Roma, cadet et mundus ("as long as the Colossus stands, so shall Rome; when the Colossus falls, Rome shall fall; when Rome falls, so falls the world").[11] This is often mistranslated to refer to the Colosseum rather than the Colossus (as in, for instance, Byron's poem Childe Harold's Pilgrimage). However, at the time that the Pseudo-Bede wrote, the masculine noun coliseus was applied to the statue rather than to what was still known as the Flavian amphitheatre.
The Colossus did eventually fall, possibly being pulled down to reuse its bronze. By the year 1000 the name "Colosseum" had been coined to refer to the amphitheatre. The statue itself was largely forgotten and only its base survives, situated between the Colosseum and the nearby Temple of Venus and Roma.[12]
The name further evolved to Coliseum during the Middle Ages. In Italy, the amphitheatre is still known as il Colosseo, and other Romance languages have come to use similar forms such as le Colisee (French), el Coliseo (Spanish) and o Coliseu (Portuguese).
Construction of the Colosseum began under the rule of the Emperor Vespasian[3] in around 70–72AD. The site chosen was a flat area on the floor of a low valley between the Caelian, Esquiline and Palatine Hills, through which a canalised stream ran. By the 2nd century BC the area was densely inhabited. It was devastated by the Great Fire of Rome in AD 64, following which Nero seized much of the area to add to his personal domain. He built the grandiose Domus Aurea on the site, in front of which he created an artificial lake surrounded by pavilions, gardens and porticoes. The existing Aqua Claudia aqueduct was extended

Spilotes pullatus

anomalepis- loreal scale absent; irregular spots, sometimes broken, sometimes forming rings; found in southeastern Brazil.
This is a beautiful and amazing snake. They inhabit a very large area of central and south america and display a very wide array of patterns.
The Tropical Chicken Snake is one of the largest and beautiful colubrids found in Central and South America. Its coloring and pattern can vary greatly. The coloration can range from almost totally black to mostly yellow to yellow-orange with black specking or irregular black banding. The eyes are black which standout against the yellow head with black bars. The yellow scales on the body are tipped or rimed with black. The ventral surface is yellow to yellow-orange with scattered black edges or bars. A cross-section of the body is more triangular in shape. These are long slender snakes with long tapered tails. They reach an average length of six to eight feet and record of 11-12 feet.

Spilotes has a large geographic distribution ranging from Tamauilpas, Mexico (Spilotes p. mexicanus) south through the rest of Central America and into South America occurring in Brazil, Trinidad, Tobago, Surinam, Guyana and further south to northern Argentina. There are five recognized subspecies occurring in this range. Most imported specimens come from Surinam, Guyana, and Colombia, South America along with the other common pet trade reptiles and amphibians.

This snake can be found in a variety of habitats ranging from rainforest, open bush and scrub woodlands, and near farms and villages where it is attracted by rodents and chickens. It is never far from water and can be found in the rafters of abandoned huts and houses. Being mostly a diurnal and arboreal snake, Spilotes spends most of its time in the branches of trees and bushes.

Its diet consists of small mammals, birds, frogs, lizards and other snakes. Prey is killed either by constriction or by pressing down on it against a hard surface. In captivity, ours accepts live or pre-killed mice, small rats and chicks.

The Tiger Rat snake, because of its size and habits does well in a large roomy and tall enclosure with plenty of branches and foliage which provide a good hide area.. A large water container and daily misting will help keep the required high humidity. Artificial lights should run 12-14 hours a day with a temperature range of 77°F to 86°F during the day with a small night time drop. Fresh imports are fairly aggressive and often inflated their necks vertically when threatened, vibrate their tails and strike. All are parasitized to some degree and should be treated appropriately. Our specimens are active snakes but seem to settle down as they become more acclimated to their new home.

Glow

The first of its kind, Glow is more than a cookbook, more than a health-and-beauty guide - it is a path to a healthy lifestyle. Using the healing properties of whole foods, the author demonstrates how to use them in daily life to achieve an overall, healthy glow.

By combining ancient Eastern practices for health with more than 150 delicious, whole-food recipes, and healing face washes, massage oils, cleansers, scrubs and soaks, this book caters to a burgeoning market of consumers interested in whole foods and vegetarianism, but most of all to the readers interested in a more balanced, more natural way of life.

Beyond the Crooked Stile

Beyond the Crooked Stile

CHAPTER 13:
BEYOND THE CROOKED STILE

It is said that Mother Goose is derived from Frau Holt, or Herodias, the goddess of the witches of northern Europe, who flies at night astride a goose, naked and (even in my childhood imagination) voluptuous in spite of the cold. She flies at the head of the Furious Horde, the Wild Hunt, her raven hair streaming out behind her, her red slitted pupils glowing on Samhain night. To be sure, she flies above the Ridgeway, where the feet of the living and of the dead have passed for millennia; a spirit path if ever there was one. At Bishopstone in Wiltshire, it draws nigh the Icknield Way, the Iron Age road to Norfolk, and between the high road and the low road lie a series of colossal gouges in the chalk which even the tourist guidebooks describe as “another world”. Five miles to the east, the chalk escarpment is rippled by glaciation to form “the Devil’s Step Ladder”, and beyond it the Uffington White Horse, smattered in spring with an interpunction of twayblades and spotted orchids, seems set to leap across the downs. Beneath that is a hill with a flattened top, where St. George purportedly slew the dragon, its blood scouring the grass to the chalk beneath it. There are few landscapes which contain so awe-inspiring an arrangement of sacred objects. The best way for the witch to approach them is from the Ridgeway itself, down one of the many paths that branch from it, and to do so, one must invariably negotiate a stile. Perhaps one day you may meet me at one of them.

In times of old, you might have left a crooked sixpence there. Weyland the Smith, whose megalithic forge lies just off the Ridgeway on the route between Uffington and Bishopstone, would certainly have accepted it, provided you did not attempt to fob him off with a lesser coin of copper. The Neolithic long barrow, sentried by four gaunt, pitted sarsen stones, is surrounded by towering beech trees, whose nuts crack underfoot as one approaches, and barn owls screech in the darkness. Come here at the winter solstice, with the rising of the sun, and the shadows shift like ghosts around you. Legend insists that Weyland will shoe your horse; I have a suspicion that he prefers to beat swords and axe-heads upon his forge, for he is not so far removed from the Green Knight, the Holly King who reigns throughout the winter, armed to the teeth in readiness to meet his rival, the Oak, on the occasion of his beheading. His namesake, the Icelandic Volundr, once decapitated a king’s sons by slamming the lid of a treasure chest down upon their necks; later he raped a princess who asked him to mend her ring. The stone at nearby Snivelling Corner was supposedly thrown by Weyland at an incompetent assistant. It is best not to bother him with trifles. But this does not stop wayfarers from leaving behind an assortment of charms, from elaborately woven corn dollies to the Rastafarian wicker man currently on display at the Uffington museum – a practice which dates back at least as far as 1939, when a “Witch’s moon dial”, made from human bone, was deposited there. Mary Chalmers, a woman skilled at curing cows and sheep, who lived at Little Moreton, east of Didcot, was the proud owner of a skull named “Wayland Smithy”, which was sold in a curiosity shop after she died in 1810. Satanic rites at Weyland’s Smithy have even been blamed for a robbery at the thirteenth century church at Compton Beauchamp in 1998, in the course of which the tabernacle was smashed, and the chalice and sacrament stolen – if the churchwarden is to be believed – for nefarious uses at the long barrow.

On a morning in early spring, the Smithy is a different place; cowslips sprout from the burial mound, and the beech buds burst with pale, translucent leaves. The resident toad, who lives beneath the beech tree to your right, emerges glass-eyed from his torpor. Everything is waking, except for Weyland himself, who sinks into the earth as the sap rises in the trees. From here, one may turn east, dodging the cagouled walkers, and return to the White Horse and the hill fort that rears above it, listening for the cronks of ravens on the way. Alternatively, one may descend towards the Vale, seeking Hardwell Camp, another fort which lies forgotten, brooding in a hazel coppice. Or one may turn up one’s collar and head westwards down the Ridgeway, towards Russley Downs and Bishopstone. If you would come with me now, you will take this route.

No, do not look up yet to admire the scenery, and if you tarry until the autumn, do not be distracted by the berries of sloe, spindle, bryony and woody nightshade. Look down at the Ridgeway itself. You are walking on prehistory, for surely the Roman road must have been pre-dated in these parts by a pathway joining the White Horse to the Smithy. More than that; you are walking on the palaeontological past, for the chalk of the Ridgeway is composed of the microscopic remains of Palaeozoic sea creatures. The round

A little ritual on the summit of Mt. Olympus and memories of a fateful day on the Matterhorn.

A little ritual on the summit of Mt. Olympus and memories of a fateful day on the Matterhorn.

I had brought one beer and, sitting up there, contemplating the wonderful moment, I rolled it in my hand; and in a precious moment of not thinking I set it on the rock and left it there.
It is a little gesture I sometimes do since I once climbed the Matterhorn long time ago. I occasionally leave little gifts on high mountain tops for the next unknown lucky idiot like myself who risks his/her wonderful life to come up there and wonders: what fool has forgotten this here, great, I take it and enjoy it. A little gesture, perhaps to myself; maybe a little melodramatic and theatrical, but no one knows…
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Again, for those who really want to read so much: here is an excerpt of a long story about this:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
… Probably two hours had passed, the glow of dawn had spread out over the snow peaks, I had just labored up a steep chimney and was panting and sweating, when I suddenly saw the soles of two boots, only inches in front of my face. I was just heaving up my body, resting on my elbows, and feeling with my toes for a foothold, when I saw these boots, almost touching them with my nose. The sight is forever printed into my memory – the barely worn profile of the soles, the yellow tags between the heel and the sole, I even remember the word VIBRAM printed on them. One boot was pointing upward, the other lay strangely inwardly tilted. I immediately knew that something awful must be connected to these boots, something that called for all the attention I had, but I also knew that my precarious body position needed total attention first. So I carefully completed my move, burning the image of these boots into my brain, and then, when my fingers felt the reliable shape of the next handhold and my knee found rest on a ledge, I let my vision quickly sweep beyond the boots and see the body connected to them.
He lay there in a way that left not the slightest doubt that he was dead. His head and his face were badly damaged, the rain had washed off most of the blood but it looked terrible. One arm lay awkwardly twisted and his rain jacket was torn; one leg was obviously broken and lay like a separate thing in his pants.
I knelt down beside him. My heart was chilled to ice. I looked around and up; he was lying on a fairly wide ledge, directly under an 80-foot narrow vertical chimney; it all looked like he had fallen down from there. A figure-eight rappelling device was clipped to his harness. Had he fallen while trying to rappel down this chimney? He must have been moved from where he had actually fallen. There was no rope or other equipment.
I sat for a few minutes – my heart racing and my mouth dry – and then it all started to make sense: This poor fellow had fallen sometime the evening before when his party came down the mountain in this awful weather. Something must have gone terribly wrong when they rappelled in this storm. His partners must have left him because he was dead and descended on down to the hut to notify the mountain rescue. That was all the noise I heard in the night. And the party behind me was the rescue team on their way to recover the body. – Now it all fell into place – That’s why they didn’t want me to pass! (They swore at me when I soloed past them).
I put on my rain gear because I started to shiver, and I sat there in silence and let my mind gradually calm down. I felt my panicked aversion to look at him closely. But then I touched him, and through my tears I finally was able to really see him, his mangled face with meaningless expression, his half-closed eyes, his unshaved cheeks. I felt sick with grief.
It didn’t take long for the rescue guys to arrive. Some made obvious smirking remarks when they saw me sitting there, miserable and sick, but one touched my shoulder in a compassionate gesture when he stepped around me.
They put the man into a body bag. Only now did I notice, in a quick last glance, how young he was, not more than 20, with black curly hair. And I remember seeing his name – Claudio – written with felt-pen on his harness. They talked on the radio for a while and prepared a rope system to lower him down the cliff to a larger ledge.
I remember sitting there and weighing the option to turn around. Such drastic demonstration of what can happen up there in the mountains at any time has to be processed.
The old friend fear cast his black shadow over my mind. This dark force that permeates the whole body like a fever and pulls it down like gravity. This friend, with whom I can never argue, who has saved my life many times over, but who has also made it miserable so many times. Did this horrible demonstration really change anything? Did I get any new information? Or did I only confuse information wit

Imitation #1 - Dan Winters, Laura Dern

Imitation #1 - Dan Winters, Laura Dern

The Laura Dern Portrait by Dan Winters is one of my favorite portraits of all time. So I wanted to take on the challenge of re-creating the lighting and the mood of his spectacular portrait. It is pure hommage to one of my favorite photogs shooting today.

Set-Up:

Having just received my new Alienbee AB800 & ABR800 in the mail a few days before, I asked my gorgeous wife if she'd sit for a few portraits. She said OK (she's so great...always putting up with my photo shenanigans). I set up a DIY teal RIT backdrop about 10' behind her. It was a really bright teal, so I needed the extra room for the light to fall off before reaching the background.

Then, I boomed my AB800 with a 22" Beauty Dish at 45 degrees and slightly above camera left, rather close in. In interviews I've watched, Dan has mentioned that he goes for extreme depth of field, so a light close in would provide the opportunity to use a powerful burst of light from the strobe (allowing a much smaller aperture) without spilling that same light all over the background. The Beauty Dish produced a really soft light across her face, even at so close a distance (probably within 3 feet).

I took a reading (yes, I like to use a meter in these formal situations) with the strobe at 1/4 power and got f/29 @ ISO 160 with the shutter @ max sync of 1/250th. Perfect. Lots of depth with controllable spill.

Next, I set up my Canon 30D somewhere between 5-7 ft. away and used my 70-200 big gun to get in nice and tight. I set up the ABR800 in front of the camera and on a tilted tripod so that I could still shoot vertically without having to attach my (very heavy) camera to the unit itself. Because of the strong key light, I had some very strong shadows that needed some filling in. I wanted something between a 1:3-1:4 ratio, so I chimped the ring flash power until I liked the result of the fill. The shadows needed some depth, but they also needed to be distinguishable and pleasing to the eye. Because the fill light was so far back, I needed to compensate in power, so I believe I was at 1/8th power on the ABR800. This also provided the perfect amount of light for the background.

With that, I posed my wife with her face toward the dished AB800 and shot away.

I am SO happy with the results, and with my new Alienbees in general. I know the backdrop is a bit darker than in the Winter's portrait, but I like a bit darker of a feel in my portraits anyways. If I had wanted to fill it in, I could have set up a backlight using my Metz, but honestly, I didn't want to. I liked this one plenty.

So I hope you enjoyed this little walk through, and I can't help but thank Dan Winters for being such an inspiration, and thank the Strobist himself for helping me learn how to light over the last few years.

I'd love your thoughts. Enjoy!

New Bail Out Bag

New Bail Out Bag

have to renew this comment as i used the bag as i should have used it from the start
as an
"Active Shooters Bag !"

plenty of space for mags and ammunition, stores easily a handgun or a H&k MP5K
offers molle inside and i attached a double pistolmag holder which works also fine as
a pen/light/knife holder
the outside pockets feature molle as well and i used them to attach a couple of chemlights and in the future some webdominators for gloves etc.
the shoulderstrap adjusts easy and it is comfortable in all postions , did a lot of running with the bag full loaded and it didn`t bounced around a lot
i like the molle on the padded shoulderpiece and attached a grimlock as well as an d-ring for keys etc.

that the zipper hadn`t any paracord attached, that`s a bit cheap but i cut some rope and did it meself, new color already in use

not for the city but even then fine for the bike or mototrbike but great for summer as an easy loadout and another great product from 5.11 ;)

251/366 September 7 '08

251/366 September 7

This is my dad's signet ring, which is engraved with the crest of Clan MacDonald, to which our family belongs. It was a 21st birthday present from his late father, and he's worn it pretty much every day since he got it.

A couple of months ago, he lost it. It was winter, it was cold, your fingers shrink in the cold, and by the time he noticed it was missing, he'd been all over the place, so it could have been anywhere. It was searched for high and low and eventually dad was resigned to the fact it was probably gone.

Last Friday he was cleaning the kitchen, and because the toaster hadn't had a proper clean in God knows how long, he took out the crumb tray and cleaned it. Then it occurred to him that there were probably still lots of crumbs stuck inside, so he tipped it upside down over the sink and out tumbled the crumbs....and one signet ring! All this time it had been in the toaster of all places!

Right before he went to clean the kitchen, he'd found some of grandad's old diaries, and an old wallet and had been looking through them. In the wallet was this old 50 Italian lire bank note, all creased and crumpled, which grandad must have picked up during his travels with the military back in the day.

So dad came across some of his dad's old things, then he just so happened to find the ring his dad had given him which had been missing, and all of this happened two days before Father's Day, which is today. I dunno about you, but I reckon that's all a little bit freaky, (in a good way). :-)

"Life Ring"~ Recycled plastics and metal ~ 6 of 6 photos

By Mary Anne Enriquez / Urban Woodswalker, 2010

I plan to wear this ring to art openings, and special functions...it fits 4 of my fingers perfectly.

The ring is very comfortable to wear, and creates public conversations about the state of our environment, and the plastic debris harming the oceans. This ring is part of an entire fashion ensemble I am creating called "Mary's Garden." The ensemble will be made out of 90% or more recycled materials....mostly plastics.

Ring measures 7 cm tall x 6 cm wide.

Nothing purchased...everything found, or in my studio.
I created this ring out of the following materials:

1 large soup can aluminum pull tab
a vintage yellow cap from a bead holder tube
1 green PET soda bottle
1 clear PET soda bottle
1 red coffee stirrer straw,
industrial adhesive
sharpie markers
metallic acrylic paint

Can I Wear My Nose Ring to the Interview?: A Crash Course in Finding, Landing, and Keeping Your First Real Job

Can I Wear My Nose Ring to the Interview?: A Crash Course in Finding, Landing, and Keeping Your First Real Job

A witty, friendly, unexpected job hunter's bible that finally answers the real questions. Yes, if you're wedded to your nose ring, wear it to the interview. No, you shouldn't be e-mailing out hundreds of resumes. Writing with enormous authority and a compelling, lively voice, Ellen Reeves brings together her lifetime of experience of hiring, counseling, and resume-doctoring into an essential guide for young job seekers.

Can I Wear My Nose Ring to the Interview? takes readers step-by-step through a process that was always tough, but is today especially challenging. Begin the search with a professional mind-set—get organized, and set yourself up with business cards, a respectable e-mail address, and a working cell phone. The importance of networking and the rule of three—try to make three e-mails or phone calls a day, but never more than that. The "elevator speech"—hone your pitch to the length of an elevator ride and be prepared to use it at the most unexpected times. The art of writing cringe-free cover letters and killer resumes—from timelines, hooks, and grammatical do's and don'ts to why you should never use the phrase "References available upon request," never include your GPA, and never, ever make a typo. How to dress for an interview, including why to put on your business clothes when interviewing at home, over the phone. Things to be honest about: citizenship and past salary range. And things not to say: "I want this job because I need health insurance."

Then once you're in, how to negotiate salary, what to expect in a review, and basic first job common sense: take initiative, be humble and helpful, never use your boss as a confidant, and always say "I'll find out" instead of "I don’t know." Now you're on your way.

Doesn't Remind Me of Anything

Doesn't Remind Me of Anything

I like gypsy moths and radio talk
Cause it doesn't remind me of anything..

Speaking of radio talk.. just the other morning as I awoke, a friend of mine who goes to High Point University told me to get online and go to his college's internet radio. I did just that and as the song that was playing ended, his voice, as the announcer, came on and said "I'd like to give a shout out to my friend Rachel. Who I haven't met--but I will, some day. I promise." Needless to say, this made my day, if not my entire weekend.

Side note on the photo itself--I have no lips. XD Maybe I shouldn't have a piercing drawing so much attention to my thin, thin lips.

TTC Streetcar - Panning

TTC Streetcar - Panning

This shot was taken for a photography course to demonstrate panning. I had it set on a tripod and spun the camera around as the street car passed by. The camera was set to continuos shooting. I used a 50 mm f1.8. This lens by far gives you the best value for the dollar. Once you get past the plastic and focus ring the quality of the images a great plus you get up to f1.8 aperture at around $130 CDN. I read a lot about this lens online and I'm glad I bought it.

The blur on the bottom right side is a cyclist going through the frame.

wedding rings houston - Houston Lost

Houston Lost and Unbuilt

Houston Lost and Unbuilt

Driven by an almost fanatical desire for whatever is new, "modern," and likely to make money, Houston is constantly in the process of remaking itself. Few structures remain from the nineteenth century, and even much of the twentieth-century built environment has fallen before the wrecking ball of "progress." Indeed, the demolition of older buildings in Houston can be compared to the destruction of cityscapes such as Berlin, Warsaw, and Tokyo in World War II. But because this restructuring of Houston's built environment has happened in peacetime, historically minded people have only recently sounded an alarm over what is being lost and the toll this destruction is taking on Houstonians' sense of place.
Houston Lost and Unbuilt presents an extensive catalogue of twentieth-century public and commercial buildings that have been lost forever, as well as an intriguing selection of buildings that never made it off the drawing board. The lost buildings (or lost interiors of buildings) span a wide range, from civic gathering places such as the Houston Municipal Auditorium and the Astrodome to commercial enterprises such as the Foley Brothers, Sears Roebuck, and Sakowitz department stores to "Theatre Row" downtown to neighborhoods such as Fourth Ward/Freedmen's Town. Steven Strom's introductions and photo captions describe each significant building's contribution to the civic life of Houston. The "unbuilt" section of the book includes numerous previously unpublished architectural renderings of proposed projects such as a multi-building city center, monorail, and people mover system, all which reflect Houston's fascination with the future and optimism that technology will solve all of the city's problems.

I love my engagement and wedding rings, I really do. I love that it's white gold. I love that the engagement ring was once Zach's grandmother's ring. I love that he gave it to me.

And I love the wedding ring we picked out that really complements the engagement ring. One day, I hope my grandson gives it to his future wife and it gets passed on to future Houston generations. I really don't want to bring this ring with me, six feet under - what a waste that would be!
