Call me old fashioned, but I prefer e-mails over internet chats like MSN. I'm also a grammar nazi, at least when I'm reading and writing in Croatian, my native language, and somehow I always find myself writing books instead of two words. People usually get scared and most of the time they reply with a simple 'ok' or 'yes' or 'that's right'. I don't chat anymore.

A couple of months ago, certain someone asked me if I could chat with him for a few minutes – he wanted to ask me some questions about my service. I was in a good mood, so I agreed – I suppose it was a good betting day. He asked me about my betting strategy, about my methods. I wrote a book and he replied 'yes'. 'So, what do you think about that?', I asked. 'I think all that Value talk is overrated', he wrote. 'Either Team A are going to win a match or they won't, I don't care if odds are 1.40 or 2.20'. I don't give up easily, so I tried to write a bit more about odds, value, long run, bookies' mistakes and, from time to time, lack of information – especially in the non-league market. 'Yeah', he replied, 'but the tipsters I like most are the ones that can pick a winning bet by simply looking at the names of the teams'. That's when I started to give up. 'That's absolutely fine with me, but my methods are a bit different', I wrote and then I probably lied about some non-existent hunger or an imaginary neighbour that has just knocked on my door.

The way I see it, it really comes down to value, long run, being ahead, having all the available information, thinking of betting as an investment, being focused and patient. Intelligence can be quite useful too, not to mention the importance of recognising your own mistakes. One thing is certain. I would never bet on a match by simply looking at the teams' names. I'm too old for that shit.

The new season starts in two weeks and I thought I could show you how I'm preparing for another nine months of football and betting. This, of course, is just one team, just an example, just one out of many files – my betting folder is priceless.

Call me old fashioned, call me crazy if you want, but all that matters to me when it comes to betting are those three sweet words – Return Of Investment.

Hawks secure Simpemba signature (9/05)

Havant & Waterlooville manager Shaun Gale has made his first summer signing with the capture of defender Ian Simpemba from Blue Square South champions Lewes.
Gale has been an admirer of Simpemba's talents for quit some time and failed in bringing the former Crawley Town captain to West Leigh Park last year.
"We are now a big football club players want to play for," Gale told Portsmouth Today.
"We are looking to bring in the right players with the right mentality and Ian fits that bill.
"He is a player I have been chasing for a while now. We tried to get him last year, but now we have got his signature."
Club secretary Trevor Brock believes that the Hawks' well publicised FA Cup run this season has certainly played a big role in landing the signature of Simpemba.
He said: "Ian's our first new signing and it shows we mean business.
"Everybody has heard of us now and players are actually ringing us about playing for us.
"We are the name club to play for at this level and that certainly helps when signing players.
"We'd like up to five players this summer."
The Dublin-born defender stared his career as a trainee with Wycombe and spent two separate spells on loan at Woking before joining Crawley Town on a free transfer in July 2004.
He made 66 appearances for the Red Devils and had a short loan stint with Aldershot before making a switch to Lewes in the summer of 2006.

Sharp out... Booth in (14/05)

Hawks central defender Neil Sharp looks set to quit the club in the summer because of work commitments which are likely to base him in Milton Keynes.
Sharp, described by manager Shaun Gale as his 'Mr Reliable,' is due to take up a new job which will make travelling to the south coast for training and matches virtually impossible.
'It is a chance for me to guarantee a secure future for myself and my family who have to come first,' said Sharp.
'Milton Keynes is just that bit further away and it would be impossible to get down here in time for training and matches.'
Sharp missed the last fortnight of the season after suffering a depressed fracture of the cheekbone when making a typically brave clearance at Eastleigh.
'Losing Sharpy is a big blow because he has been a fantastic servant to the club,' said Gale.
'I know the player himself is gutted because he knows what we are setting out to achieve here.
'He would have loved to have been part of it.
'Obviously, we will have to look at bringing someone else in.'
One candidate to replace Sharp could be ex-Pompey defender Guy Butters who has just been released by Brighton. He has had talks with Gale.
'I had a chat with Guy on a couple of matters because I have known him since Pompey his days,' said Gale. 'He has been a good professional all his career.
'If we do possibly agree something he would be a quality signing.
'Some people might think his age is against him but he has looked after himself and kept very fit.
'Don't forget, he played 25 games in division two last season so we will have to wait and see what develops.'
Meanwhile, the Hawks are on the verge of signing last season's Blue Square South's joint-top goalscorer Paul Booth, from Lewes, for an undisclosed fee.
Booth is the second Lewes player to make the move along the south coast, joining ex-team-mate Ian Simpemba at West Leigh Park for next season.
The striker scored 34 goals last season, including 27 in the league, helping Lewes become Blue Square champions and earn promotion to the national division.
Before joining Lewes, Booth was also a prolific scorer for both Welling United and Cambridge City in the Conference South.
'If we get him he will be a great acquisition for us,' said Gale.
'He is a fantastic player with a great attitude, who works his socks off and knows where the goal is.

Hawks swoop for Booth and Holloway (16/05)

Blue Square South side Havant & Waterlooville have raided Lewes for a second time to clinch the services of striker Paul Booth and midfielder Gary Holloway.
Booth and Holloway will link up with former Lewes teammate Ian Simpemba, who joined the Hawks earlier in the week.
28-year-old Booth finished the campaign as the Blue square South joint top scorer and has put pen-to-paper on a deal which sees Chamal Fenelon make a switch to Lewes.
Experienced midfielder Holloway joined Booth in signing for Lewes in the summer of 2006 and has joined him in making a switch to Havant & Waterlooville.
"These are players that Shaun Gale has seen play and he feels they could play a big part in next season's promotion campaign," club secretary Trevor Brock told the club's official website.
"He knows exactly what he wants, and gaining Simpemba, Booth and Holloway won't be the end of our transfer dealings this summer."

Havant boss continues rebuilding (26/05)

Blue Square South side Havant & Waterlooville have continued to strengthen with the capture of defensive duo Jay Conroy and Jay Gasson.
Former Crystal Palace trainee Conroy signs for the Hawks on a two-year deal from league champions Lewes while left back Gasson arrives on a free transfer following his release by Blue Square Premier side Woking.
Manager Shaun Gale has already raided Lewes three times and this fourth signing is expected to be the last arrival from the title winning side.
Meanwhile, Gale has released his retained list for the upcoming season and they are as follows:
Tom Taylor, Justin Gregory, Phil Warner and Michael McEnery. Paul Watson's loan spell has ended and he has returned to Crawley.
The following players are under contract for the upcoming campaign:
Charlie Oatway, Jamie Collins, Gary Elphick, Charlie Henry, Luke Nightingale, Brett Poate, Kevin Scriven, Jamie Slabber, Jay Smith, and Shaun Wilkinson.

Baptiste, Harkin and Taggart look elsewhere (28/05)

Indications have come from the Hawks board that suggest Mo Harkin, Tony Taggart and Rocky Baptiste have all been unable to negotiate new contract terms with Hawks boss Shaun Gale for the coming season. The trio are the only players remaining from last season’s squad still not tied up for next season, although it has now been said that Harkin and Taggart are looking elsewhere for new deals. Baptiste meanwhile is strongly rumoured to be on his way back to Hayes & Yeading, Hayes being the last non-league side the striker appeared for before joining the professional game at Luton in October 2000.
All three players have given Hawks fans plenty of memories, but will remain forefront in the minds of most for their part in last season’s tremendous FA Cup run. Harkin’s goal at York secured passage to the second round for Taggart’s goal to seal the Hawks’ first win over a league side, and Baptiste’s part in the third round game at Swansea remains the highlight of a career with the Hawks that saw the striker net 85 goals in three seasons.

Hawks snap up veteran Butters (30/05)

Blue Square South side Havant and Waterlooville have swooped to clinch the signature of veteran defender Guy Butters following his release by League One club Brighton.
The 38-year-old has joined the Blue Square South club after the Seagulls decided not to renew his contract at the end of the last campaign.
Butters had been with Brighton for six years having previously played for Tottenham, Portsmouth and Gillingham.
Havant boss Shaun Gale told his club's official website: "He'll bring a wealth of experience to our defence.
"We've got a reasonably young side at the back now so adding Guy to that mix will give us someone with know-how and leadership qualities.
"He's 38 but fit, and keeps himself fit. Last season he played 26 games for a successful Brighton side and his pedigree speaks for itself."

Hawks poised for stadium expansion (16/06)

Blue Square South club Havant & Waterlooville are set to invest hundreds of thousands of pounds into upgrading the facilities at Westleigh Park.
The Hawks had a memorable run in the FA Cup last season and were eventually knocked in the fourth round after a thrilling encounter at Liverpool's Anfield Stadium.
The club's coffers were swelled with more than £500,000 from the Anfield tie alone and a number of improvements have already been approved by planners at Havant Borough Council.
Club secretary Trevor Brock told Portsmouth Today: "We are trying to put some of our FA Cup money back into the facilities for spectators.
"We had a tremendous run in the last season of the FA Cup and chances like that come once in a blue moon.
"We are not spending the money on players or anything like that - we are trying to make it better facilities for the fans and players."

Eastleigh Complete Jordan Deal (20/06)

Eastleigh's long and bitter battle to sign towering defender Tom Jordan from Havant & Waterlooville is finally over.
Some nine months after Eastleigh's ex-Havant boss Ian Baird first declared his interest in the 26-year-old, the Blue Square South rivals have put their differences behind them and finally agreed two-year deal - for an undisclosed fee.
To say the Jordan saga stirred up a lot of ill feeling between the clubs would be an understatement. Baird's pursuit of the centre-back so soon after his bombshell departure from Westleigh Park last October met with a defiant not for sale' message from the Hawks who accused their south coast neighbours of offering "Mini money for a Rolls Royce."
Jordan himself cranked up the tension by resigning the Havant captaincy and publicly declaring he wanted to leave the Portsmouth outfit.
Havant, though, stubbornly stuck by their guns, rejecting a flurry of offers from Eastleigh and eventually leaving the under-contract Jordan to kick his heels in the stands.
Eastleigh subsequently withdrew their interest and signed Ashley Vickers from Weymouth instead.
But with defenders Karim El Salahi, Chris Collins, Warren Goodhind and Adam Everitt all leaving the Silverlake this summer and freeing up some cash, Baird went back for Jordan two weeks ago - and he has finally got his man.

Hawks start pre-season with a win (8/07)

The Hawks’ pre-season campaign got underway with a 1-0 victory against East Preston this evening. The visitors took an expanded squad to the Sussex County Division One side, with several academy players featuring among the impressive list of summer signings, playing together for the first time.
The match, which featured Assistant Manager Charlie Oatway’s son in the ranks of the opposition, was a balanced affair for much of the first half, and a spirited performance from the hosts keeping matters goalless at the break.
Academy graduate Nathan Ashmore made a superb debut in goal, making several saves to deny an increasingly active home front line, but the visitors notched the only goal of the game three minutes after the break. Craig Watkins skipped the ball in from the left and squared it past keeper Dean Fuller for trial forward Danny Edwards to turn into an open net.

Plenty of positives for Hawks after loss (17/07)

The Hawks came through their first big pre-season test with flying colours despite losing 1-0 against Championship opponents Reading at West Leigh Park last night.
Kevin Doyle slammed home the only goal of the game in the 59th minute when the Hawks failed to deal with a corner – but for much of the game the Blue Square South side matched their illustrious visitors.
The woodwork denied the Hawks a deserved opening goal shortly before half-time and manager Shaun Gale felt there were a lot of positives to be taken from the encounter.
'Reading had five regulars from last season's Premiership side out there so we were up against good players,' he said.
'I thought we stuck to our task and there were some good performances from my players.
'We looked solid in both halves and kept our shape.
'It was a decent work-out and that is all we want at this stage.
'I have been pleased since day one of training with the application and attitude of everyone in the squad and I think that showed out on the pitch.
'The team spirit is great and the players want to play for each other.'
All the Hawks new summer signings appeared at some stage, apart from striker Paul Booth who was ruled out by a groin injury, and it was the home side who created the best of the early chances.
Brett Poate's wicked inswinging free-kick was taken off the head of Guy Butters at the last moment and Charlie Henry saw a goalbound shot deflected wide.
Eight minutes before the break Poate sent a thunderous 25-yard volley crashing against the far post with Reading's Olympic-bound Australian goalkeeper Adam Federici beaten.
Reading had more possession in the second half and eventually made the breakthrough but apart from the goal Hawks keeper Kevin Scriven was hardly troubled.
Hawks: Ashmore; Conroy, Gasson, Collins, Butters, Simpemba, Henry, Holloway, Watkins, Nightingale, Poate.
Second-half subs: Smith, Elphick, Wilkinson, Slabber, Edwards, Hinshelwood, Nurse, Baldacchino, Ford, Scriven.
The Hawks set off for a three-day tour to Jersey today.
