Though the town has not witnessed any GST-related protest, powerloom owners here have expressed their resentment over 5 per cent GST on fabric.Besides owners who are slashing production, there are many workers who are losing their livelihood.In the textile town of Bhiwandi, around 45 km from Mumbai, those who are running textile units have already started feeling the pinch after 10 days when the new indirect tax regime came into existence.Kailash Mehta, president, Grey Cloth Traders Association in Malegaon told the ET, "We are ready to get a GST number, provided our buyers and suppliers take it too."I have over 10 lakh metres of unsold cloth in storage." Many other weavers said they still dont have clarity on GST for textile sector. I don’t have more space. The IE report adds that a woman who earned Rs 14,000 a month by working at a twisting ans mending machine lost her job. On cotton yarn there is 5 per cent GST. Bhiwandi has over 4 lakh powerloom machines run by workers many of them are from north India who had migrated to the town in search of bread.Ahmeds FT Textiles runs 5,000 powerlooms. He adds that as there is no clarity it is harder for them to explain small weavers the nitty-gritty of GST. According to reports the government has put man-made yarns under 18 per cent GST bracket

"Our government has given approval to 24 Textile Parks in the last one year, the rest were cleared by the previous government. We are mainly focusing on manufacturing of value-added products and export-oriented goods that will benefit the economy," Minister of State for Textile Santosh Gangwar told reporters at Make in India Week here today. We are planning to launch the new textile policy by April. It will be used to bring in more investment in the sector," Ms Verma added.He further said the government will not sell the National Textile Corporation (NTC) lands located in various cities.Textile Secretary Rashmi Verma said the government has come up with revised TUF to give capital subsidy to the new units that will be set up and also to the existing ones which want to bring in modern machinery and increase their output."We have decided not to sell the NTC lands spread across the country.Stating that India is the highest producer of cotton in the world, the minister said during the current cotton season, farmers have got prices, which are more than the Minimum Support Price."This is a good time for textile."We will notify the guidelines for the new scheme by the end of the month.The government is expecting Rs 30,000 crore investment in 74 textile parks and is planning to announce a new textile policy by April this year.. We are functional fabrics looking at starting some other non-polluting industry on them," he added.The cotton marketing year runs from October to September. So in total we are setting up 74 textile parks, which will attract an investment of Rs 30,000 crore," he said
