Sydney’s new wave of indie-pop serves up The Jezabels who have released their debut EP The Man is Dead. The cover features a floral hooded figure, reminiscent of Rene Magritte’s surrealist artwork. It represents the EP perfectly; the phrase ‘dead man walking’ comes to mind after listening to the lyrical content.

The Man is Dead starts off strongly with Disco Biscuit Love, which is definitely their most sophisticated track on the EP. The songs are quintessential tracks for late teens 20-something year olds song about drugs, men, women and the art of self destruction. Catchy and rhythmic, social commentary is disguised amongst the layers of sound that meld together flawlessly. Vocalist Hayley takes you along the musical and emotional peaks and valleys of the songs as the band create tiers of beautiful musical dissonance.

This record shows that this classically trained quartet, based in creative hub that is Newtown, are more capable than just making mindless dance music. Much like Magritte, their work is much more thought provoking than meets the eye (or ears). A world where a pipe is not a pipe and a pop song is not just a pop song. It will be interesting to see how their EP tracks translate to their live shows. It is a challenge for many bands to captivate an audience both live and on tape.

Overall, their debut EP is an audible delight filled with an atmospheric blend of indie disco pop that cements The Jezabels into this category, for now.
