HECUBA is Isabelle Albuquerque and Jon Beasley. They are from Los Angeles.
One never knows what to expect from Hecuba. Dancers, Japanese Koto harp, computers, beat machines, trombones and soul singers have all been a part. L. A. Record says they have “real and weird and unexpected soul.”, while Paper Thin Walls writes, “Hecuba’s dubbed-out drone-moan is the L.A. version of New York bands like Excepter or Gang Gang Dance: sexier, cleaner, not as gnarled, more open spaces, more vocals, less concerned about their record collection, would rather dance to hip-hop than talk about it… not afraid.” L. A. Weekly says, “I was shocked. And in this day and age it is damn hard to be shocked. They are performers in a true sense.”

‘You have to admire V.V.Brown’s style…she has single-handedly invented her own music genre doo-wop indie’ Vogue the Next Big Thing
‘#8 Singer V V Brown’ Vogue’s Don’t Miss List
‘How did this songstress stay behind the scenes until now. I love Crying Blood it’s everything a big summer hit should be’ Grazia
‘I encounter the thrilling Spectorish pop of V V Brown and am struck by the notion that she might be massive.’ The Word
In this 24-year old’s world, love sounds like the perfect melody. Both are difficult to define she says, but both pour out of the songs on her debut album. This is music which sounds like performance: dramatic, charismatic and, frequently, as mad as a box of frogs. This is high definition, high concept pop with scuffed edges and laddered tights. “It’s about letting out all these ideas I’ve had locked up in my mind,” Brown states. “It’s honest - it’s not about being festooned with Ł10m diamonds or having perfect hair.”

Julian Plenti began writing music in 1996 in New York City. Almost immediately he started playing solo acoustic shows at NYC venues like Tobacco Road, Pete's Candy Store, The Knitting Factory, The Living Room, and “Lach’s Antihoot” at the Sidewalk Cafe.
In 2001, he stopped performing. Though he continued writing and doing occasional engineering work, he essentially went on sabbatical.
The break ended in 2006 when Plenti acquired the music production software, Logic Pro. Logic proved to be a far greater creative asset than any other medium he’d previously encountered, allowing him to compose for multiple instruments and to make beats. The possibility of making music with an orchestral palate - rather than confined to his own voice and guitar - was an irresistible lure.
The first step was to resurrect early acoustic work such as Girl on the Sporting News, On the Esplanade, Fly as you Might, and Fun that We Have, and to refurbish them with beats and string arrangements. The resulting recordings bred newer enthusiasms and were the catalyst for this record. Skyscraper was born.
In the fall of 2008, Plenti went to the Seaside Lounge in Brooklyn to work with studio co-owner and engineer – and college classmate – Charles Burst (former drummer of The Occasion and now a solo artist). Burst engineered much of the record and plays drums on Only If You Run, Skyscraper, and Girl on the Sporting News.
Session musicians were hired to perform the arrangements for strings and horns, and Plenti called on some friends to contribute. Mike Stroud of Ratatat appears on Skyscraper as the second guitarist, Sam Fogarino of Interpol plays drums on Games For Days, and Striker Manley of Stiff Jesus appears on Fun that We Have and No Chance Survival.

Falcao and Monashee release self-titled debut album with CD release party planned for Saturday, June 6th at Hokos, Vancouver. The CD is available now through CDbaby and will available soon through digital distributors such as itunes, Amazon and lala. As well all 8 tracks off the album can be heard on their myspace.
Set to play MUSIC WASTE '09 @ the Rickshaw Theatre w/ Shearing Pinx, 'It It, and Tigerhead, and currently planning a Cross Canada Tour for the fall, the duo have been playing numerous shows in Vancouver since January 2009. Their eclectic mix of electronic and organic has met with audience praise and a growing fanbase in Vancouver and on the internet, with recent performances in Vancouver at the Media Club and the Biltmore. A live review in DISCORDER compared them to Joy Division and the Cure, and other comparisons have been made to the Cocteau Twins, Young Marble Giants, Siouxie and the Banshees and Pentangle.
Recording began with loops and field recordings in a cottage on Galiano Island BC, developing into an album which was finished in Vancouver in March 2009. Featuring bass, drums, guitar, and 40's organ of Brazillian-born Rodrigo Falcao singing alongside BC-psych-folk descendent Monashee Sun, playing a multitude of instruments including harp, banjo, violin and keyboards with Moog delay and flanger.
FM's CD Release Party w/ guests The Magician, Zombie Pistolero, and more is planned for June 6th at Hoko's, an all-ages DTES venue which has recently regained its music license to continue serving a much-needed role in Vancouver's Music Scene, as mentioned recently in blogs and magazines such as Canada's E. The night will also be a celebration of Hokos, with an invitation for everyone to come early for Sushi and Karaoke and a call for attendees to print and bring their own/favourite/random-off-the-internet photos of past Hokos shows to become part of a display.

07. Back Home
Formed in the early days of 2006 by three semi veterans of the indie rock and electronic music underground in Paris (Damien Mingus aka My Jazzy Child, Aurélien Potier, Axel Monneau aka Orval Carlos Sibelius) somewhat tired with the electric sound, Centenaire initially dreamed itself as a chamber folk trio, playing acoustic guitar, charango and cello… First and foremost for pecuniary reasons (and rehearse at home, drinking tea), then for the artistic crave of playing hide-and-seek with the complex schemes of baroque music, silence, the Penguin Café Orchestra, Yes, Delta blues, Pentangle, Mark Hollis or, in a simpler manner, to tell tell-tale stories directly from mouth to ear. After having initiated the hype of home concerts, Centenaire put on weight with the arrival of multi-instrumentalist Stéphane Laporte (Domotic), of a drum mini-kit and of an electrical organ, and considerably extended its musical grammar (from Sonic Youth to Tortoise) with every new retreat to the countryside.
Now comes The Enemy, and you can hear clearly that the boys in the band went deeper into the forest. They wandered in quiet, silent glades, met with strange trees with weird ramifications and beds of electrical brambles: in seven tracks and half an hour of music produced with the help of sound engineer extraordinaire Miguel Constantino (Papier Tigre, Talibam) and mastered by Alan Douches (Animal Collective, Sufjan Stevens, Mastodon...), Centenaire bring in mind at different moments the celestial pop of The Beatles or The Sea and Cake, Elliott Smith’s tetchy folk music or This Heat’s storms of steel. Here and there, a sequel of chords will remind you of Yo la Tengo, a vocal line will evoke the Canterbury School of progressive pop. Yet the most important questions remain: is it soft or violent music? Trivial pop or sheer melancholy? It’s hard to say; just as hard in fact as it is to attach Centenaire to other musical scenes, both in France and abroad. One sure thing, though: whether the music is acoustic, electric or electronic, nothing frightens them.

There could hardly be more lovely an opening to an album than “Colombian Fireworks”, the first song from There Will Be Fireworks‘ self-titled debut album. The electronic soundscape and mechanical effects give way to a guitar’s sparse wail and the slow tones of Stornoway poet Kevin MacNeil. I actually met MacNeil once, but that’s a sad and humorous story for another day.
There Will Be Fireworks is an incredibly fluid record: ebbing and flowing from acoustic love-songs to sweeping post-rock, and seeming entirely timeless while doing it. As the perfect innocence of young love in “Guising” explodes into the frenetic chaos of “Off With Their Heads”, it’s hard to tell where one song ends and the next begins, making it feel cohesive and fragmented at the same time: an epic series of starkly juxtaposed movements.
The gentle piano and slow brass of “A Kind of Furnace” seems so far removed from the crashing climax of “We Were A Roman Candle”, but it works so seamlessly that you find yourself unable to argue. The live-recorded instrumentation lends the sound a unique warmth and urgency, and it’s simply beautiful.
Everything about this album - from the subtle interweaving of precise guitars, classical instruments, and electronic noise to Nicholas McManus’ emotive vocals and thoughtful, charmingly naďve songwriting - comes together to cre
