Popes is a band formerly led by Shane MacGowan of the Pogues, who play a blend of rock, and Irish folk, sometimes referred to as Paddy Beat, borrowing from World Beat, a popular genre name in the 1980s. Shane MacGowan and the Popes released two studio and one live album in the 1990s. As well as serving as MacGowan's backing band, The Popes recorded one studio and one live album without MacGowan, and have toured on their own.

The band's line up has changed through the years. Members have included Paul 'Mad Dog' McGuinness (guitar), Tom McManamon (banjo), Andy Ireland (drums, vocals), and Bob Dowling (bass). Past members have included Mick O'Connell (accordion), Kieran "Mo" O' Hagan (Acoustic guitar, vocals), John Myers (fiddle, tin whistle), Danny Heatley (aka Danny Pope) (drums), Berni "The Undertaker" France (bass), Colm O'Maonlai (whistle), and Kieran Kiely (accordion, whistle). Long-time friend of McGowan, Johnny Depp joined to promote the single, 'That Woman's Got Me Drinking' in October 1994. Depp played guitar on the track, directed and appeared in the video, and made a string of appearances with Shane.

In March 2007, several former members appeared as The Popes at a memorial concert for Tom McManamon. Meanwhile, Guitarist McGuinness had already announced a new line up with a new album in the works. The "new" Popes are Paul McGuinness on guitar and vocals, Will Morrison on drums, Charlie Hoskyns on guitar, Fiachra Shanks on banjo, mandolin, Laurie Norwood on bass, and Ben Gunnery on fiddle. This line-up has recorded a new album called 'Outlaw Heaven' that is currently being mixed by Chris Brown (Radiohead, etc).

Initially conceived as the sophomore solo album by singer/songwriter John
Wozniak, Marcy Playground's fourth album, Leaving Wonderland...In a Fit of
Rage, never quite shakes the feeling of being the work of one man: acoustic
guitars outweigh the electrics and a hazy spirit of eclecticism hangs over
the album, as do circular Lennon-esque psychedelic melodies, all fueling a
feeling of introspection. This means Leaving Wonderland sounds quite a bit
different than its loud, grungy predecessor, MP3, not to mention Marcy
Playground's eponymous 1997 debut, but its weathered, worn sounds feel
appropriate for the band 12 years on from "Sex and Candy." Elements of that
early version of the band can be heard here, largely in Wozniak's facility
with a hook -- best heard on the lightly propulsive "Star Baby" -- and also
how the group can occasionally grind out some noise. But this isn't about pop
or rock; it's a nicely inward-looking collection of adult rock. It does feel
a bit like a solo album, but it's better that it's released under the group's
name, because it deserves to be heard by a wider audience as it proves that
there's more to Marcy Playground and Wozniak than one grunge-era hit

Sony/BMG's Legacy imprint decided to commemorate the 40th anniversary of
Woodstock by issuing a slew of double-disc deluxe packages by catalog artists
who played the festival. Each slipcase contains the featured artist's entire
performance at Woodstock and, as a bonus, an LP sleeve reproduction of a
classic album issued near the time the festival occurred, as well as fine
individually, designed double-sided posters. Johnny Winter's volume in this
series contains the remastered version of his self-titled debut album in a
snazzy LP cover sleeve. It is one of, if not the greatest album in his entire
catalog. More importantly, Johnny Winter's performance at Woodstock is, with
the exception of one cut -- "Meantown Blues" -- the only one never to have
been released in any form before now. This 64-minute, eight-song concert is
an important historical document for numerous reasons, not the least of which
is the absolutely killer show Winter and band put on. Winter appeared at the
festival with his then-rhythm section of Tommy Shannon and "Uncle" John
Turner (later to back Stevie Ray Vaughan in Double Trouble). Also appearing
with the band on four cuts is Winter's brother Edgar on Hammond B-3
According to the liner notes what was to be played was unplanned, making for
a stellar, unself-conscious public offering by an all but unknown artist to
the Woodstock audience -- to be fair, there were two others at the time: Joe
Cocker, and Crosby, Stills & Nash (with and without Neil Young). The set is
divided between smoking originals -- an electric 12-string attack on
"Meantown Blues" and a stomping "Leland Mississippi Blues," as well as
well-chosen covers from his blues repertoire, including an electrifying
version of J.B. Lenoir's "Mama, Talk to Your Daughter" to open the show. The
version of B.B. King's "You Done Lost Your Good Thing" is the best cover
version ever. The rhythm section here is so tight -- despite Winter's
high-flying free-form improvisational attack. They are not only rocksteady
they help to control the dynamic and keep the show firmly on the ground. Of
the material with Edgar, the reading of Bo Diddley's "I Can't Stand It,"
(which had recently been cut for Second Winter) is the most startling, though
"Tobacco Road," with Edgar on vocals goes off in all sorts of intriguing
directions without losing its country-blues flavor despite the electricity
Only the R&B standard "Tell the Truth" doesn't cut it. It's not because the
band isn't tight -- it is and even goes into some popping jazz terrain, and
Winter's solo is a buzz saw -- it's because the harmony vocals are terrible
The gig closes with what must have been his first recorded version of Chuck
Berry's "Johnny B. Goode." While the vocals are a bit rough, the playing is
anything but (even if Winter flubs a change on the turnaround in the middle)
The rave-up on this tune is a showstopper, making this altogether an
indispensable entry in Johnny Winter's catalog. This is guitar hero rock and
blues with a vengeance.

12. The Duckworth Lewis Method - The Duckworth Lewis Method (2009) (Indie) (Rapidshare)

7. Rain Stops Play
8. Meeting Mr Miandad
9. The Nightwatchman

11. Test Match Special
12. The End Of The Over

With new ball in hand, The Duckworth Lewis Method release their eponymous maiden album, July 6th - exquisitely timed to coincide with this summer's Ashes tour.

Written by Duckworth (Thomas Walsh) and Lewis (Neil Hannon) the album was recorded and mixed in Dublin and mastered just down the road from Lord's in Abbey Road Studios.

All the songs are either loosely or tightly connected to the beautiful game of cricket, there are no covers, extra covers or cover drives for that matter. These are all wonderfully crafted pop songs for cricket lovers and non-lovers equally to enjoy.

First delivery, `The Coin Toss', spins wickedly into lead single `The Age Of Revolution', released June 28th.

From `Jiggery Pokery', which tells the tale of the Gatting Ball and features guest cameos from Phill Jupitus, Alexander Armstrong and Matt Berry amongst others, through the Trescothian angst of `The Nightwatchman', to the triple century of `Test Match Special'. This album really hits `The Sweet Spot' (track4!) with a guest appearance from Cathy Davey.

With trademark melodies and glorious harmonies, the anthemic `Meeting Mr Miandad' is yet another album highlight. It depicts Duckworth and Lewis' epic road trip to meet the legendary batsman Javed Miandad.

"The Duckworth Lewis Method is an album steeped in the love of cricket and pop. The resultant twelve songs are a cacophony of leather and willow turning through a cosmos of searing melodies and all round tunes," says Duckworth in his post match interview.

14. Crazy
15. This Must Be the Place (Naďve Melody)

'I've been doing this a long time,' declared Shawn Colvin upon the release of her 2006 Nonesuch debut, These Four Walls, 'and it's great to feel like I'm doing my best work now.' This new live solo set reconfirms that feeling. The three-time Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter combines material from two decades' worth of recordings and makes it all sound even more deeply insightful and compellingly up to date, recent songs like 'Fill Me Up,' the yearning opening track of These Four Walls, and the tougher, bleaker 'I'm Gone,' seem as much like old favorites now as 'Sonny Came Home,' Colvin's career-making Top 40 success, and 'Shotgun Down the Avalanche,' from her 1989 major-label debut, Steady On. Along with original songs from five studio albums, Colvin performs covers of Robbie Robertson's 'Twilight' and Gnarls Barkley's 'Crazy.' With the latter, she transforms what was a funky, sing-along smash into something dark, brooding and bluesy and she performs it with utter conviction to a rapt audience. She ends on a sweeter, more hopefully romantic note with a version of Talking Heads' 'This Must Be the Place,' which she made her own years ago on the 1994 Cover Girl collection.

15. The Dodos - Time to Die (2009) (Indie) (Rapidshare)

2. Longform
3. Fables
4. The Strums
5. This Is A Business
6. Two Medicines
7. Troll Nacht
8. Acorn Factory
9. Time To Die

With a title like Time to Die, you might think the Dodos third disc is their mature album, a deadly serious undertaking punctuated with string sections and synths. Nice try kid, but you've got it all wrong. While indie rock's go-to guy, Phil Ek (Built to Spill, Fleet Foxes, The Shins), hopped behind the boards this time, the Dodos wildly-percussive style is still centered around two key elements: the punchy percussion of Logan Kroeber and the Fahey-infused finger-picking of frontman Meric Long. Oh sure, you'll hear a horn blast here and there, but its never enough to distract you from the groups riffs and rolls.

Time to Die introduces one major addition to the creative core of The Dodos: Keaton Snyder, a 21-year-old music school dropout who plays a mean vibraphone. Not that you'd never know Snyder was the Dodos third man without looking at the new album's liner notes. Not because he's missing in action half the time; he's just locked in step with Longs steady-handed strumming and Kroeber's canon-like beats. That, and Snyder's actual sound/physical presence isn't all that different than the visceral elements explored on the Dodos previous two albums, 2006's Beware of the Maniacs and the bands buzz-stirring breakthrough, 2008's Visiter.

Time to Die expands the Dodos Ginsu-sharp sound without smothering it. It's not the death of everything you adored about the duo; it's a rebirth, revealing some serious career standouts (the widescreen payoff of "Small Deaths," the string-and-drum spasms of "Longform," the delicate/distorted dynamics of Snyder's "Troll Nacht" parts) along the way.

04. Asleep in the Tunnel
05. Back in the Day

07. Factory Man
08. Simple Fix
09. Tensile
10. All Those Notes

On September 8, we will release Mister Pop, The Clean’s first new studio album since 2001’s Getaway. What can be said about the Clean? In 1978, they were the seeds of New Zealand punk. They carved out a big sandbox for everyone to play in, and their influence resonated not only in New Zealand but around the world.

The New York Times described The Clean: “This New Zealand band, which has been going off and on since 1978, plays a jangly, damaged kind of guitar pop and was a primary influence on Pavement and Yo La Tengo, and therefore virtually all of current indie rock.” In 2003, we released Anthology, the 2-disc compilation of tracks and song cycles from across The Clean’s musical career. Anthology was chosen by Blender Magazine as one of the 100 Greatest Indie-Rock Albums Ever.

Mister Pop sees The Clean continue the great pop pastiche. Circus ragas (“Moonjumper”), gorgeously hazy sunset anthems (“In the Dreamlife You Need a Rubber Soul”), and the sometimes-loose Dada approach to wordsmithery continue right alongside “proper” lyrical forays, and a few Autobahn-referential instrumental moments to boot (“Tensile”). Bob’s love of pastoral UK folk has brought some added weight into the overall Clean equation, as does David’s Eastern and African guitar jones, though all this has always fit in with—and still constitutes—the total basis of the Clean sound journey.
