If we can agree that the first generation of power pop began with Big Star in the early '70s, then Peter Holsapple and Chris Stamey, who became new wave/power-pop cult heroes in the early '80s with the dB's, had a foot in that era through their pre-dB's work with Alex Chilton. Which is to say that Holsapple and Stamey know a thing or two about turning out sparkling pop gems with some rock 'n' roll grit, if anyone does. After Stamey left Holsapple to front the dB's on his own in the mid-'80s, the pair reunited in 1991 for the first Stamey & Holsapple album, Mavericks. Over the last couple of years, they've also gotten back together under the dB's banner for the occasional gig, and are allegedly working on a new dB's album, but Here and Now marks their first recorded collaboration in 18 years.

They've made it very clear that this shouldn't be viewed by anyone as a dB's album, and that band's recent shows reveal them to be as on-point as ever, so Holsapple and Stamey clearly have nothing to prove in that regard. Accordingly, they've taken this opportunity to tread a somewhat lower-key, more "mature" path than the irresistibly herky-jerky/quirky pop of their old outfit. Not a million miles from Mavericks, Here and Now is a warm, organic effort pitched halfway between folk-rock and the power-pop the pair is so expert at. A breezy, summery feel prevails on tunes like "Early in the Morning" and "Some of the Parts," where an odd side effect of Holsapple and Stamey's maturation is their now-lower voices blending into a harmony sound that's become strangely reminiscent of They Might Be Giants.

In any case, you don't rack up a CV like these guys have by making records devoid of sparkling songcraft, and that's proven consistently over the course of this disc. Still, for all the sophisticated, melodic pleasure to be found on Here and Now, a comfy old shoe of an album, one could be forgiven for occasionally wondering whether things might achieve just a touch more frisson if Holsapple and Stamey surrendered just a little to the temptations of that sharp-edged sound of yore. To be sure, it's tough growing up in rock 'n' roll, but ultimately, these two old friends navigate the process with grace and elan.

03. Drift
04. Wolves in the Attic
05. Facemelter
06. Downer's Grove
07. For You For Now
08. On and On

10. Mourning Glory

The first release from newly minted Mission Freak Records is here. Wolves in the Attic, the Ames, Iowa purveyors of rabid, raucous pop will see the widespread release of their debut record Electronic Hearts on February 17.

Eyes and ears are noticing the band as they perform across the Midwest, occupying coveted slots along the way opening for bands such as The Faint, HEALTH, Titus Andronicus, and These United States. Electronic Hearts is devoted to keeping the spirit of their live sound in tact while embracing a more nuanced take on their live show that envies My Bloody Valentine-level decibels. Wolves in the Attic update the fuzz of '90s indie rock and include bits of psychedelia and garage rock, all coalescing into a concise, unruly pop affair.

Electronic Hearts marks the arrival of Mission Freak Records, from the same people who present the Mission Creek Music Festival every spring in Iowa City, IA. Founded in the spirit of the festival, Mission Freak endeavors to make each release something to look forward to by releasing it in limited run before making it widely available. For Electronic Hearts, the label enlisted Justin Kerr (San Francisco's DIY or Else Records, The Blacks) to package the album within 200 vintage hardcover books. The project came out beautifully, and now seeing Wolves in the Attic live means that you can peruse their veritable library for your own, singular copy of the debut. This spirit promises to continue for future MFR releases, each of which can expect its own concept and dedication.

11 Eyedropper
12 Velvet Painting of the Stars
13 All the Lights Are On In Malibu

While I haven’t been huge on this whole beach/tropical pop trend as of late, this release has shocked me. The description had me expecting another Ducktails, but no, I was in for more of a treat. Combining elements of already mentioned beach/tropical pop, drone, ambient and even a little bit of tribal music, the gentlemen in Universal Studios Florida (and I thought Woods were hard to Google!) have created an album that isn’t too far off from one of the decade’s arguably best albums: Panda Bear’s Person Pitch. A vast array of sounds cascade upward, building a wall of sound, drifting the audience off into a sun-soaked outer space. I know that made no sense, but that’s the only way I can describe this album. Their MySpace describes their sound as “Dense tropical percussion with golden, shining synth lines in an ambient valley where big beat drops are just around every corner.” I know I say this a lot, but this is rapidly becoming one of my favorite albums of this year, wonderful for those who enjoy Panda Bear, High Places, Ducktails or music perfect for summer evenings.

14. Subway - Subway II (2009) (Electronic,Dance) (Rapidshare)

1. Persuasion
2. Lowlife
3. Simplex
4. Harmonia
5. Jupiter
6. Monochrome
7. Horizons
8. Delta II
9. XAM

Soul Jazz's very own in-house electronic disco group Subway return with their first full length album since 2005's 'Empty Head' set. The list of equipment used to fashion this album includes an enviable roll call of Roland Jupiter 6, Korg MS20, Univox SR55, Roland MKS80, and a Moog Prodigy alongside the usual guitars, drums and tape loops proving that these guys are a fully analog outfit. there's no radical departure from their previous sound, sticking to what they do best with intuitive dancefloor jams and spacey head-music sounding like they could have come from any point between the late 70's and today with elements of NYC avant-disco, Krautrock, German electronics, Radiophonic ephemera and proto house sculpted into a unique sound. Recommended!

15. Sunlight Ascending - All The Memories, All At Once (2009) (Indie,Post Rock) (Rapidshare)

1. All The Memories, All At Once
2. Four
3. Black Bear
4. Continental Drift
5. Out Of This Place II
6. Out Of This Place
7. Reverse Dragons
8. Ocean Depth/Closing Paths
9. Vanil/Requiescat

"If you were to just listen to this band on a whim without looking at a press release or Myspace page, your first thought might be how they have mastered that dreamy, instrumental sound that has become increasingly popular through labels like Temporary Residence and Rock Action. But I want to focus on the press release for a second. The age of the band members in Sunlight Ascending range from 14 to 21. It is pretty impressive that a band this young can play at a level that some musicians 10-15 years their senior aren’t even close to. If you are a fan of any of the bands (referring to Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky, and Maserati) and/or record labels above, I would have a hard time imagining you not becoming a fan of this up-and-coming band. To the band, I say keep up the great work and go for it. College is overrated anyways."

"The members of Troy/Clawson-based instrumental indie/shoegaze band Sunlight Ascending are all between the ages of 13-17, yet the band has created quite a stir with their Mogwai-esque sonic constructions. Having recently completed a self-titled 5 song EP, the band displays a sensibility akin to the more ambient side of Godspeed You! Black Emperor or the more distorted and propulsive side of Kranky artists like Jessamine. Part of an increasingly sophisticated set of young bands emerging from the Detroit suburbs (such as The Muldoons and The Displays), Sunlight Ascending has been featured at the Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit's celebrated Sonic Lullaby Festival with such acts as Auburn Lull, Rx Gibbs, Soundpool, Indian Guides, and Kindle.

"Oakland County-based indie/metal maniacs Sunlight Ascending are taking over the current Detroit scene with their ambient approach to the genre. Led by the stinging strings of guitarists James Schultz, Sean Reed and Andy Mac, a smooth viola sound and a tight rhythm section, the band has leapt out into the forefront after opening for some big acts, including These Arms Are Snakes. While the band has stayed true to the foundations of both indie rock and metal, the group fashions both genres together like a painter, creating a beautiful soundscape that needs no words or vocals. The crunch of Maiden is there, along with the noise-pop sensibilities of groups like The Velvet Underground. The band will be playing an all ages show at The Rec in Hazel Park on March 6. Catch the show and relish the intimate nature and beauty of what a wonderful group of teenagers is doing.

16. Florence and The Machine - Lungs (2009) (Indie) (Rapidshare)

7. Drumming Song
8. Between Two Lungs
9. Cosmic Love
10. My Boy Builds Coffins
11. Hurricane Drunk
12. Blinding
13. You've Got The Love

Florence Welch, better known alongside her band as Florence& The Machine, confidently announces her arrival on 'Lungs'. With several strong singles taking up a fair portion of this debut release, it's clear that Welch is as much a pop writer as she is a left-field artist, despite the early influence of punk and grunge on her life. Musically, these influences are tempered by an admiration for soul and contemporary indie. Welch also received the Critics' Choice award at the Brits in 2009, usually a sign of big things to come. Includesthe singles 'You've Got The Love' and 'Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)'.

4. Gone with the Wind
5. Hollywood Sign
6. Champagne Downtown
7. Un-American
8. Be a Man

11. [CD-Rom Track]

HALLOWEEN, ALASKA is a band based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. Their third full-length release "Champagne Downtown" is now available online and via independent music retailers, as are the self-titled debut and follow-up "Too Tall Hide".

" ... Like [TV On The Radio], this Minnesota quartet lays out moody guitar and keyboards bric-a-brac atop subtly quaking beats ... there's understated elegance all over their third record—soft, glassy drones, worried groove glitch, a shy come-on cribbed from an old Prince song."

"[FOUR STARS]...HALLOWEEN, ALASKA's emotive verve and electro-organic poise is so accomplished, you'd think you'd got your hands on The Blue Nile's mislaid comeback album."

"A lot of bands claim not to fit any preexisting pop music genre, but few can back up such claims as convincingly as Minneapolis-based HALLOWEEN, ALASKA...jittery-jungly and swooningly melodic...sonically large and weirdly cathartic...Highly recommended."

19. The Gentle Lurch - The Beat Of The Heart Is The Beat Of The Boss (2009) (Rock) (Rapidshare)

CD 1

1. Time Has Done Nothing Wrong
2. Owl III
3. Tonight, I
4. Pigeons
5. The Magic Ingredient To Flames
6. Song Sung In A Wooden Voice
7. The Disappearance

CD 2

1. The Villagers
2. Folksinger
3. Amendment
4. What Are We
5. Kept Woman
6. The Modesty Of Our Demands
7. Let's Roll

The Gentle Lurch’s second album, ‘The Beat of the Heart is the Beat of the Boss’ is a sprawling, experimental epic consisting of 14 songs split over two discs. This time round, the band is loath to include anything less than 5 minutes in length. Also, their sonic palette has grown to encompass jazz and orchestral chamber music.

On first listen, it is clear that this is an album that is not going to give up its charms easily. Lars Hillers, heavily accented, half spoken drawl is a barrier that prevents any immediacy being discovered in the sound. Much more pleasant is Cornelia Mothes bluesy vocals on ‘Owl’ and ‘Kept Woman’.

However, tenacity pays when listening to The Gentle Lurch, and eventually the myriad of charms contained in these sprawling arrangements start to present themselves. At times the band sounds almost discordant, at other times, the sound is so lovely that it sounds completely out of place (the backing vocals on ‘The Magic Ingredient to Flames’ being a prime example.

Ultimately, ‘The Beat of the Heart…….’ is not going to be to everyone’s tastes. However, if ‘Yankee Hotel Foxtrot’-era Wilco is one of your key texts, give The Gentle Lurch a spin. Patience is a virtue after all.
