2.Luomo - Convivial (2008) (Electronic,House) (Rapidshare)

Luomo - Convivial (2008)

Marking a return to his House persona Luomo, Vladislav Delay's Sasu Ripatti follows up on 2003's The Present Lover with another glorious full-length brimming with state of the art 4/4 productions. While Convivial makes quite an impact as a technical achievement (the production is consistently a delight to the ears) this is an album with a lot of heart too. That's partially creditable to the roster of guest vocalists who bring a little humanity to the steely perfection of Ripatti's artificial intelligence: we already know about the Apparat-fronted future disco of 'Love You All', the first single to be lifted from the album, but there are vital contributions made elsewhere by the likes of Cassy Britton, Sue-C and even Jake Shears of the Scissor Sisters, who delivers an uncharacteristically sober performance on the soulful melancholy of 'If I Can't'. Johanna Iivanainen crops up at several points across Convivial, and it's arguably her vocal that integrates most seamlessly into the frosty digital sound world, becoming just another instrument in the mix on 'Slow Dying Places' and 'Sleep Tonight'. Regardless of what moniker he uses or what genre he chooses to inhabit, Ripatti is one of those rare electronic musicians to have devised a sonic idiom that's all his own, and Convivial is a virtuoso piece in this respect: in addition to the obvious technical flair behind all this, like an Autechre or a Fennesz there's such a distinct and unique character embedded within Luomo's circuitry, and it fills every bar of these long, winding narratives. Excellent.

4.Cain's Dinasty - Legacy Of Blood (2008) (Metal) (Rapidshare)

Cain's Dinasty - Legacy Of Blood (2008)

That cover art is sure to pull in a lot of horny young men, but luckily Cain's Dinasty have more up their sleeve than a few gorgeous vampiric dames fondling eachother. This band plays melodic, speedy Power Metal with a creative fire lit under their ass the size of Wisconsin, and Legacy of Blood is their debut album. You see, Cain's Dinasty have donned their velvet capes and grabbed their coffins, plunging into the shadows of the night with a dire thirst for blood and a penchant for danger, death and the devil - and really good Metal music, too, for their saccharine-sweet brand of Power Metal is one heavily rooted in vampiric mythos. Not the lame Hot Topic kind, either, as far as I can tell; this is the real deal. Musically, this doesn't sound too close to a carbon copy of any band I can think of. The songwriting is agile and snappy, the riffs are smoking, smoldering slabs of steel that will no doubt please the traditional Heavy Metal fan in all of you, and the vocals are an accented, high-pitched wail reminding of Kai Hansen or perhaps Tobias Sammet at a Halloween party. The melodies are tinged with a certain Gothic feel to them, transporting the listener to a 15th century Gothic cathedral, the lights dimmed, shadows dancing all around the sidelines like Exotic callgirls. The backing harsh vocals utilized on several tracks is a huge plus, as well, adding the demonic touch that Legacy of Blood needed to further its chosen gimmick, and just sounding really fucking cool when combined with Ruben Picazo's shrill wailing. This is a pretty short and direct album, and it packs enough variety to keep the more picky sorts interested: heavy, chugging speed attacks that put the recent works of Iron Savior and Gamma Ray to shame, touching ballads, and a few midpaced quasi-epics for good measure. The opening epic bombast of the title track is perhaps the best recitation of the Power Metal genre we'll hear this year, with a set of blistering, powerful riffs, screaming solos and basslines as sharp as Dracula's wisdom teeth, and it's probably the best song here, but Cain's Dinasty packs some other good tunes too. "Two Seconds to Forget Your Name" is good, a midpaced epic that romps forth with some commanding riff patterns and a mature melodic sensibility that honestly surprised me. "Under the City Lights" is another good one along the same lines, and "Infancia Eternia" is a malicious, bloodthirsty tune with a cool vocal tradeoff chorus and a barrelfull of stuttering machine-gun harmonic riffs, and "Come to Me" is an excellent piano ballad. Cain's Dinasty do not disappoint, and with a debut this strong, one can only hope they up the ante next time and make an even better album. Very, very cool stuff.

7.Times New Romance - Tonight! Tonight! (2008) (Rock) (Mediafire)

Times New Romance - Tonight! Tonight! (2008)

Times New Romance emerges from two previous incarnations called Mona Lisa Overdrive (2003-2004) and Element 36 (2004-2006) with Michael being the longest-serving member. In 2004 Walter joins on the drums, followed by Chris M. on the second guitar. A period of productivity ensues and culminates in the first live appearance of Element 36 in October 2005. Despite frequent changes in the bass department over the years, the triad of Michael, Walter and Chris has remained constant from 2004 onwards. February 2006 marks a turning point when Anita is taken onboard as the new woman at the front. After only two weeks of readjustment, the band appears publicly at Local Heroes 2006 with Anita on the mic. This is also the last concert under the name of Element 36. Since the style changes significantly, the need for a new name arises, and so Times New Romance is born. Lyrics are in English exclusively, old Element 36 songs are either abandoned or revamped. New songs that show a darker and heavier orientation start taking form. A self-titled demo is recorded over summer. In autumn of 2006 the band presents itself at the Austrian Band Contest and proceeds to the quarter finals. 2007 brings change as well with the addition of Chris K. (formerly Visions of Atlantis), who fills both the bassist and the keys position, also bringing in his experience as producer. The band starts reworking their set, enhancing songs, evermore defining their style. A highlight of 2007 certainly is the participation in the Fusch Rockfest, located in the National Park Hohe Tauern, in front of several hundred people. In 2008 Ernst comes aboard as the new bassist, bringing with him new energy and groove. There are also changes in the vocals department: The band parts with Anita and shortly afterwards welcomes Bettina. In summer Times New Romance play their first outdoor gig at a beautiful medieval castle in the Austrian countryside. Autumn holds frequent concerts and unfortunately also the departure of Bettina.
