Shawn Desman
With a Platinum debut album, chart-topping singles & videos, a movie role and international accolades all under his belt, singer/dancer/songwriter/producer Shawn Desman is back for more. Desman’s sophomore release Back For More features an A-list team of producers including Rodney Jerkins (Destiny’s Child, Michael Jackson), Tricky Stewart from RedZone (Britney Spears, B2K) and Perry Alexander (Keshia Chanté, In Essence). Plus, collaborations with award-winning writers like Laney Stewart, J. Que, ThaCornaBoyz and Tab who all have delivered #1 hits for artists like Usher, Destiny’s Child, Babyface and others.
After two years of traveling the world penning and producing tracks there is no question Desman is ready to dispel the notion of the sophomore jinx. His high-energy, infectious first single, “Lets Go”, co-written and co-produced by Perry Alexander, exploded onto the Top 40 radio chart after just 1 week, proving that he is a superstar entertainer worthy of all the critical acclaim and destined to be at the forefront of the global music stage. From the moment he released his self titled debut CD in the fall of 2002, Shawn Desman has enjoyed phenomenal success. His album spent an incredible 49 weeks on the SoundScan Top 200 sales chart and produced two Top 10 singles and two #1 videos . Desman’s visibility then soared to even greater heights when he partnered with Reebok to promote the Classic “Amaze” running shoe, and with his appearance in the 2003 film Honey starring Jessica Alba, Mekhi Phifer and Lil’Romeo, Desman was solidified as a triple threat, marquee artist.
Another key element in his critical mass breakthrough was Desman’s extensive tour schedule, both in Canada and abroad. In August 2004, he performed throughout Europe including a 22-date stint in Germany. It was these stellar live shows, coupled with the accolades that he had garnered in Canada that helped Desman’s label secure releases in Australia, Japan, Brazil, India, Philippines, Switzerland and Korea.
But despite this frenetic pace, Desman, like many other accomplished entertainers, still found time to perfect his craft by co-writing and co-producing songs for up and coming artists like Keshia Chanté, whose Gold debut album featured the #1 single “Bad Boy”; the handiwork of Desman and Perry Alexander.
Not content to rest on his laurels, Desman is the first to acknowledge that this new CD is a solid body of work because he took the time to hone his skills and was willing to try new techniques. He also credits the decision to enlist the support of industry heavyweights, who are at the top of their game in the songwriting and producing arena, as a wise investment that will yield invaluable dividends.
Writers like J.Que, who helped pen “Insomniac”, was fresh off the heels of his collaboration with Usher on the massive hit single, “Yeah”.
Atlanta-native Tricky Stewart, best known for his production of Blu Cantrell’s ladies anthem, “Hit Em’ Up Style” and Britney Spears and Madonna’s “Me Against The Music”, also lent his writing and producing genius on several tracks including the catchy mantra “Red Hair” and the mid-tempo groove, “Man In Me”.
But perhaps the most acclaimed contributor was Rodney Jerkins, the Grammy Awardwinning writer/producer of hits for Destiny’s Child, Michael Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, Toni Braxton, Whitney Houston and others, was responsible for Desman’s beat junkie fix, “Sexy”, a song that was held back from the Honey soundtrack for inclusion on his forthcoming CD. Laney Stewart and ThaCornaBoyz round out the team of American masterminds who helped define the album’s sound.
However, Desman’s decision to stay true to his roots and once again recruit the talented Canadian duo, Perry Alexander, may prove to be his most rewarding joint venture yet, as the first single, “Let’s Go”, has already surpassed the peak charts positions of all of his previous songs.
With an instantly recognizable riff, “Let’s Go” combines the signature Shawn Desman up-tempo vibe with an old school flavour. This fusion of classic and contemporary elements is what Desman calls “Progressive R&B”.
“I wanted the record as a whole to reflect the essence of traditional R&B and the purity of old school hip hop, but still be progressive with our production techniques and maintain the electricity of modern pop music.”
Categories aside, Desman describes the album as a “relationship” record, even despite the moniker’s recent overuse. And while many artists say that their album is about relationships, Desman makes the distinction that his songs are not just about male/female interaction, they also relate to his connection with his family, his fans, himself and the hundreds of people who have touched his life while traveling around the world.
"What If" is about my grandfather, who passed away in 2004 and I felt that there was still so much I wanted to say to him.”
Whatever the inspiration, it’s undeniable that Back For More represents a tremendous leap in the right direction for a young man who has spent most of his life working diligently at becoming a world renowned entertainer, with personal and professional accomplishments that leave an indelible mark on the human experience.
