Varsity libraries losing appeal
.
UNIVERSITY libraries are now much quieter as more undergraduates are turning to virtual libraries and Internet search engines for help in their studies while enjoying food or drinks at cybercafes or eateries offering wireless facilities.
This new trend riding on digita-lised broadbrand Internet connections also allowed students to retrieve resources or research materials in their pyjamas in the comfort of their own homes, Universiti Sains Malaysia student affairs and development deputy vice chancellor Prof Omar Osman said.
As such, he said, it was pertinent for libraries in institutions of hig-her learning to adapt and keep up with the information era by boos-ting their virtual online contents to entice undergraduates and academicians into using their services.
“Public universities must also admit that their libraries are no longer the place where students converge to look for materials for their assignments.
“Libraries must make sure that they are still relevant especially in this information age,’’ he said when he recently opened the strategic planning workshop in Penang for librarians from public universities and colleges nationwide.
Prof Omar said USM libraries had to improve the management of their virtual content as courses were more research-based leading students to go online for research purposes instead of going to a library.
On the possibility of students using the Internet to plagiarise, Prof Omar said it was up to the academicians and student bodies to deter them from abusing the abundance of online information.
“All the undergraduates need to do is copy or cut and paste the li-terature. Thus, their lecturers must be alert and check for such irresponsible acts,” he added.
Universiti Putra Malaysia chief librarian Amir Hussain Md Ishak, who heads the network of all IPTA academic libraries in the country, said undergraduates could now have access to all libraries in local public universities by just sho-wing their student security identity cards.
Amir Hussain said university students could also surf www.perpun.net to have access to 24,000 thesis papers done by their seniors.
The public is also allowed to use university libraries for their research purposes if they obtained approval from university autho-rities.
