The requirement for plastic is gradually increasing across various industries in many parts of the world, including Mexico. Therefore, there has been a growing demand for Mexico plastic market.
GMI Research noted that Mexico plastic market size would observe significant expansion in the coming years. This rapid development is due to the rising requirement for plastic products in various industries including aerospace and automotive. Moreover there are growing government regulations around one-time-use plastics along with the rapid industrialization and urbanization.

The Opportunities Ahead

There are several opportunities looming for Mexico plastic market in the near future.

1. Opportunities in automotive

The automotive industry’s efforts to decrease vehicle weight for improved fuel efficiency have significantly depended on plastic elements. High-performance plastics also enhance safety and durability by absorbing impact. Additionally, electric vehicle makers are investigating the use of plastic battery casings to balance the batteries weight and minimize fire risks. Consequently, the demand for plastic components in automotive applications is rising.

2. Demand in medical devices

The international medical device sector is set for significant expansion. Much of this growth centered in Mexico, a country that has traditionally been a cost-effective center for medical device assembly and manufacturing. Pressure from the US customers for quicker delivery times has led many medical device manufacturers to relocate production from China and various Asian nations to Mexico.
In just five years since its launch in Tijuana, plastics provider Brentwood is already expanding its manufacturing facility. The expanded space produces thermoformed packaging for Central America and the US customers. The company attributed its successful operation in Mexico to the strengths of the local team when disclosing the expansion.

3. Plastic packaging

One of the major factors driving growth in Mexico plastic market is packaging, with a particular focus on food and appliances packaging. Furthermore, this sector has proven to be exceptionally resilient to market disturbances. According to AMEE’s report, plastic packaging production in Mexico rose by 15% even amidst the global covid pandemic. The surge in plastic production was largely driven by growing demand for cleaning products, food, and beverages.

4. Plastic for manufacturing

The growth of plastic manufacturing in Mexico has led to a rising demand for supporting equipment. The industry has turned to importing injection molding tools, extrusion systems, and robotic technology to bolster automation. Mold machinery producer Haitan International recently launched a new site in Jalisco which aims to better cater to its regional customers. Nevertheless, the company has emphasized that its primary goal is to supply machinery to its clients across the Americas with Mexico serving as a central hub for this purpose. The combination of Mexico’s strong international highway and rail networks with its deep-sea ports on the Pacific and Atlantic coasts ensures easy access to worldwide customers.

5. Demand for more resins

The expansion of Mexico plastic market has led to a higher requirement for the raw materials essential for plastic production. Although Mexico produces substantial quantities of PE, PP, PET, and PVC resins but its imports nearly match its domestic production. With Mexico purchasing plastic resins with value over USD 42 billion from worldwide sources, there is a chance for plastic suppliers and manufacturers to improve the supply chain processes.
