 U jesen 1976, bubnjar Larry Mullen stavio je obavjest na oglasnu ploču u Mount Temple školi u Dublinu, tražeći ljude da se pridruže bendu. Paul Hewson (aka Bono Vox), Dave Evans (aka The Edge), Dik Evans, and Adam Clayton su se prijevili. Dik je ubrzo napustio bend kako bi se pridruzio Virgin Prunes-ima, dok su ostala četvorica osnovala bend pod nazivom "Feedback", prije promjene imena u "The Hype" i onda u "U2"  U2 je jedan od najpoznatijih bendova 80ih godina. jednako poznati po svome zvuki i izjavama o politici i vjeri, U2 su bili rock'n'roll predvodnicu u razdoblju popa i heavy metala... rijetki su bendovi koji su vjerovali u rock potencijal za revolucijom kao U2, i rijetki su bili bendovi koje je bilo briga da li su djelovali budalasto na stageu...
