DEPP PURPLE BIOGRAFIJA

Godine 1968 nekoliko mladića se skupilo kako bi oformilo bend. U početku je bilo zamišljeno da se bend zove Roundabout, ali napose su se članovi složili da to baš i nije bilo pogodno ime. Sljedeća ideja za ime je bila Fire (Vatra), ali je već postojao bend takvog naziva. Konačno je Ritchie Blackmore, mladi gitarist koji je došao iz Hamburga gdje je svirao u malim klubovima, predložio ime Deep Purple prema imenu omiljene pjesme njegove bake u izvođenju Nino Tempoa i April Stevens. U početku su se članovi benda sramili svojeg imena, ali kasnije, kad su ga vidjeli na oglasima pokazalo se prilično dobrim.

Članovi benda su došli sa raznih strana britanske pop i rock scene. Klavijaturist Jon Lord i basist Nick Simper su svirali u bendu pod imenom Artwoods i Flowerpot Man. Bubnjar Ian Paice i pjevač Rod Evans su bili bivši članovi benda Maze, dok je Ritchie Blackmore upravo bio proveo nekoliko godina u Outlawsima.

Prvotnu ideju o stvaranju benda su dala dva mlada biznismena: John Coletta and Tony Edwards. Oni su uložili novac u pojačala i opremu, čime je započela ova rock legenda.

Prvi nastup je bio u Danskoj, gdje su bili pozvani kao nasljednici The Flowerpot Man-a, benda koji je tamo bio popularan zbog svog hit-singla.

Nakon skandinavijskog iskustva, u travnju 1968., bend se vratio u Englesku i ušao u studio ne bi li snimio svoj prvi album. U to vrijeme bend se bavio obrađivanjem pjesama popularnih autora, kao što su Beatlesi, Ike Turner, Joe South i drugih. Stoga su odlučili da snime svoju inačicu Joe Southove pjesme Hush koja je bila zapažena na top listama u SAD. Grupa je provela dva dana u studiju kako bi snimila album Shades of Deep Purple. Na svoje zaprepaštenje Hush je postala velika uspješnica u SAD. Unatoč uspjehu s one strane oceana, gotovo nitko da nije niti čuo za Deep Purple u njihovoj rodnoj Britaniji, te se bend odlučio po prvi puta posjetiti Ameriku. Posjet je potrajao, a njihove (autorske) pjesme, poput Mandrake Root su bile standardni dio koncertnog repertoara sve do 1971. Pjesme je imala dva instrumentala za dva brilijantna glazbenika Jon Lorda i Ritchie Blackmorea koji su pokazali fantastični smisao za rock improvizaciju. Jedan od koncerata u SAD iz tog vremena postoji na bootlegu pod nazivom Inglewood 10.18.68.

Nakon toga DP su se vratili u Englesku, kako bi snimili svoj drugi album, koji je izdan u studenom 1968. Na tom albumu, The Book of Taliesyn, DP je još uvijek svirao obrade, ali su se pojavile i njihove pjesme, kao Wring That Neck, Anthem, itd. Povijest se opet ponovila, i album nije bio najbolje prihvaćen u Britaniji, i bend je opet otputovao u SAD. Kroz serijal koncerata, Jon Lord i Ritchie Blackmore su postali svjesni svoje naklonjenosti čvrstom i jakom zvuku. Počeli su svirati tako, a to je odlično pratio i Ian Paice na bubnjevima. Malo po malo, ostala dva člana, Rod i Nick, nepripremljeni na nove putove kojima je bend krenuo su se osjetili nesposobnim prihvatiti ovaj stil sviranja, te su Blackmore, Lord i Paice odlučili naći zamjene ovim dvama glazbenicima.

U međuvremenu, bend je snimio svoj treći studijski album nazvan po bendu. Nakon nekoliko nastupa u Engleskoj početkom 1969. i pojavljivanju na BBC-u, DP su ponovo otišli u SAD kako bi dovršili turneju. Neke od BBC sesija se mogu naći na nekoliko bootlega ( BBC Stew, In Perfect Harmony...), koji pokazuju koliko je drugačiji bio novi stil za koji se grupa opredijelilia.

Posljednja pjesma na albumu Deep Purple je April: duga pjesma u dva dijela. Prvi dio su klasične partiture koje je komponirao Jon Lord, a ispratio Blackmore na gitari sa 12 žica i muški zbor. Drugi dio je žešći i snažniji rock koji ukazuje na novo DP usmjerenje. Paice je ovdje pravo otkrivenje u vidu inventivnog bubnjara, dok Lord pokazuje odličnu sposobnost za aranžmanima, a Blackmore postavlja nove standarde sviranja rock gitare. Sve u svemu, bend je bio zreo za uspjeh.

Mk1 je posljednji put nastupio 4. srpnja 1969. u Cardiffu, UK.

Nakon odluke da zamijene pjevača i basistu, Jon Lord i Ritchie Blackmore su proveli sredinu srpnja 1969. u potrazi za pravim glazbenicima. Razglasili su da DP treba pjevača i basistu i dobili su odgovore od Ritchijevog starog prijatelja Mick Underwooda koji je bio bubnjar u grupi Episode Six u to vrijeme. Jon i Ritchie su bili došli na jedan nastup te grupe, te im se svidio vokalist, pa su mu ponudili mjesto u Deep Purple. Ime tada nepoznatog pjevača je bilo Ian Gillan. Deep Purple je već bio rezervirao studio za snimanje svojeg sljedećeg singla Hallelujah. Tijekom proga u studiju, Gillan je predložio svog prijatelja i suradnika iz Episode Six, basistu Roger Glovera. Gillan i Glover su godinama bili pisali i skladali pjesme skupa. Roger je prihvatio ponudu i bend je počeo probe u Henwell Community Center u Londonu. Nakon dva tjedna su uvježbali nekoliko pjesama, poput Child in Time i Speed King. Konačno su imali nešto čime će zamijeniti staromodne pop pjesme i osvježiti svoje nastupe. Bootleg Paradiso Amsterdam Je snimljen 24. kolovoza 1969. i pokazuje kako je bend napredovao zahvaljujući novim članovima.

U isto vrijeme, Jon Lord je završavao svoju dugo planiranu zamisao koja se nazrela već u spomenutoj pjesmi April: pisanje djela gdje će se sjediniti rock grupa i klasični orkestar. U toj zamisli je našao sudruga: svog profesora glazbe Malcom Arnolda koji je ravnao Kraljevskim simfonijskim orkestrom. Nakon nekoliko proba, održan je koncert u Royal Albert Hall u Londonu. Deep Purple je iskoristio publicitet i na istom koncertu izveo nekoliko svojih pjesama i pružio priliku britanskim ljubiteljima rocka da se upoznaju sa novim glazbenim pravcom kojim je krenuo bend. LP sa koncertnom snimkom je izdan krajem 1969. pod imenom Concerto for Group and Orchestra. Ovaj nastup je izrazito povećao popularnost benda u Britaniji.

Bend je korak po korak spremao nove pjesme za snimanje. U ovo vrijeme, bend je ulazio u studio puno puta na dva-tri dana kako bi snimao pojedine pjesme.Početkom sedamdesete bili su skoro dovršili snimljeni materijal, i u svibnju je izdan čuveni album, Deep Purple in Rock koji je istovremeno plasiran visoko na top listama, te je bendu široko otvorio vrata u Europu i UK. Usporedo sa slljedećim hit singlom, Black Night, album je odlično prodavan i bend je postao sinonim za novi zvuk - Hard Rock. Speed King i Child in Time su prekrasne pjesme sa odličnim solažama u kojima se potvrđuje vještina kojom su baratiali članovi benda. No i ostale pjesme na albumu su bile inovativne, sa snažnim rifovima, creativnim stihovima i interesantnim aranžmanima. Neke od ovih snimki postoje na BBC Stew i In Perfect Harmony bootlezima. Bend je bio uzbudljiv i snažan. Ritchie je jednom izjavio:"...ako nije uzbudljivo, nije dostojno albuma". Tisak je također bio na strani benda svojim povoljnim kritikama:

"...An exciting monster rock album from Deep Purple..." "...Rock being the operative word. Ritchie Blackmore's gutsy guitar tears its way through the album, dominating it, and Jon Lord keeps very much to the role of backing musician. When he does contribute his delicate and thoughtful pieces, he uplifts what is generally a very fine sound. Their wild Speed King is a conglomeration of early rock-n-roll lyrics strung together, and is in line with other groups looking back to their roots. At times the album is nice-ish but on the whole a monster album and very exciting...".

Tijekom 1970. bend je bio prilično zaposlen u U.K. i Europi. Svirali su u svakom većem mjestu, pogotovo u Njemačkoj i skandinavskim zemljama. Jedan od ovih nastupa je snimljen za lokalnu štokholmsku radio stanicu i dostupan je na bootlegu Scandinavian Nights. Bend je na bini i dalje koristio materijal sa prva dva albuma, ali uz daleko bolji doprinos Gillana and Glovera. Paice je dobio bubnjarsku solo dionicu u pjesmi Rolling Stonesa "Paint it Black". Veliki broj fanova smatra da je ovaj period bio najuzbudljiviji u cjelokupnoj karijeri DP.

U listopadu 1970. bend je izveo sljedeći koncert sa orkestrom. Ovog puta je to bio The Light Music Society Orchestra, kojim je ravnao Malcom Arnold a održan je u The Royal Festival Hall u Londonu. Srećom, ovaj je događaj snimljen i izdan kao Gemini Suite - Live. Ovo je bila još jedna klasična skladba napisana za orkestar i pet članova Deep Purple, u kojem su pojedini stavci zasnovani na glazbenicima. Treba poslušati briljantni Blackmoreov stavak! Nešto drugačije od Concerto for Group and Orchestra, ali podjednako zanimljivo.

Nakon što su osvojili Europu i U.K. druga postava DP je otišla u SAD kako bi izvidjela postojili još interes za njima i sjećaju li ih se još ljubitelji čvrstog rocka. Uspjeh ove turneje je bio potun, a 1971. su također posjetili i Australiju.

U prosincu 1970. je došlo vrijeme za novi studijski album. Bend je bio na vrhuncu žanjući uspjehe albuma In Rock, nakon kakvoga je majstorstva bilo teško bilo što smisleno komponirati. Hoće li bend nastaviti u već oprobanom stilu, ili će otvoriti nove horizonte? Zbog toga su odlučili smiriti se i razmisliti o budućim projektima u maloj kući pod imenom The Hermitage, u Welcombe Villageu u Devonu (U.K). Proveli su dva tjedna pišući, skladajući i cugajući u lokalnom pubu. Rezultat je bio minimalan: jedna pjesma pod nazivom Prostitute, a koja je kasnije dobila ime Strange Kind Of Woman. Pjesma je snimljena u siječnju 1971. i izdana kao singlica. Ostale pjesme nisu bile gotovo sve do proljeća 1971., kada je album konačno dovršen. Album je dobio ime Fireball i u svakom slučaju je zvučao drugačije. Pjesme su bile mekše i sporije, sa jakim utjecajem bluesa uz više eksperimentiranja sa zvukom. The Mule i Fools su dobar primjer toga. Ritchie je svirao novim blues zvukom; Lord je briljirao i u pjesmi No, No, No pokazao sav svoj talent. Paice je fantastično precizan i koristi dva bas-bubnja u Fireballu prvi i zadnji put (koliko nam je poznato).

Međutim, kroz snimanje albuma isplivalo je nešto neočekivano (i opeasno). Odnosi između članova benda su postali napeti, pogotovo između Gillana i Blackmorea. Nedostatak međusobne tolerancije je bio jedan od glavnih razloga Gillanovog kasnijeg odlaska iz benda u ljeto 1973. I Gillan i Blackmore su ispoljavali snažnu osobnost i težnju ka autoritativnošću, što je dovelo do krize u bendu. Zlatni dani DPa su počeli postajati prošlošću. Srećom, ovi nemili događaji se nisu odrazili na živu svirku benda. Zvuk benda iz ovog vremena se odlično može ocijeniti na snimkama poput Oldenburg '71 ( 07.04.71. Oldenburg, Njemačka) i Danish Yodel ( 24.04.71. Aarhus, Danska). Nakon europske turneje, bend je ponovo otišao u SAD i Kanadu - još jednu napornu turneju.

U listopadu 1971. su prekinuli turneju zbog bolesti članova benda, što je bila izvrsna prilika za planiranje novog studijskog albuma. Odluka je pala da se snimi živi album u praznoj dvorani, jer su bili svjesni da bolje zvuče uživo, te da bi izbjegli tupi zvuk prethodna dva albuma. Svidjeo im se zvuk u Casinu u Montreauxu u Švicarskoj, te su prosinac proveli u zemlji satova, čokolade i banaka. Dva dana prije nastupa DP u Casinu je koncert imao Frank Zappa i "Mothers of Invention", a ovo je (ako već ne znate) opjevano u pjesmi Smoke on The Water. Ukratko: netko je zapalio cijelu zgradu tijekom Zappinog nastupa. Nitko nije stradao, ali je DP izgubio mjesto za snimanje albuma. Nakon nekoliko dana, Claude Nobs, Švicarac, poznanik članova benda je našao prazan hotel na obali jezera Geneva, gdje je album, u konačnici i snimljen. Prije ovog snimanja bend je uobičavao svirati zamjetne verzije pjesama Highway Star i Lazy. U Grand Hotelu, koji je neznatno preuređen, bend je snimio svoj novi album pod nazivom Machine Head na opremi Rolling Stone Mobile Unit (kamiona za snimanje).

Početak sljedeće (1972.) godine bend je proveo u turneji po SAD. Uz nekoliko novih pjesama na listi pjesama "Deep Purple" je postao još uzbudljiviji sastav. Highway Star je bila skladba za otvaranje koncerta, a dijelovi pjesama Mandrake Root i Fools su bile ubačene u Space Truckin'. Pored ove dvije pjesme, bend je izvodio Lazy i Smoke On The Water sa svojega zadnjeg albuma. Never Before i Maybe I'm A Leo su izvedeni samo jednom, što se može čuti na albumu In Concert; snimljenom u Paris Theatre, London, 9. travnja 1972. Ove je godine bend bio najzauzetiji. Machine Head je bio uspješan album, a zahtjevi za bendom su postali ogromni, pogotovo u SAD. Probe za novi album su počele u kolovozu iste godine. Odabrali su vilu u predgrađu Rima (Italija). Međutim, najgore se desilo: Blackmore je napustio bend i četiri preostala člana su napravila samo jednu pjesmu - Woman From Tokyo.

Sljedeće ishodište svjetskih turneja je bio Japan: dvije predstave u Osaki i jedna u Tokiju. Uprava je predložila da bend konačno zvanično snimi svoju živu svirku i izda to u obliku duplog LPja. Zbog toga je dovežen Rolling Stone Mobile Unit, te su koncerti u Osaki, 15. i 16, te u Tokiju 17. kolovoza snimljeni i izbor izvedbi je izdan kao album Made in Japan. Bend je bio na vrhuncu, a njihov prvi živi album je stigao na police oko Božića 1972., baš u vrijeme kad je bend završavao svoju zadnju (šestu) turneju po SAD te godine. Dodatno je kasnije (1993.) izašao album Live In Japan na 3 CDa sa gotovo potpunom snimkom sva tri koncerta, a na posebnom izdanju albuma za 25. godišnjicu izdavanja Made in Japan na kojem su do tada neizdane pjesme našle svoje mjesto (uglavnom bisovi).

Listopad 1972. je bio rezerviran za daljnje snimanje sljedećeg albuma u Minhenu u Njemačkoj. Tijekom prethodeće turneje u SAD Gillan je u Daytoni, Ohio (SAD) izjavio da će napustiti bend, što su ostali članovi, kao i uprava benda prihvatili. Nakon Nove Godine, bend je imao turneje u Europi (Njemačka, Francuska, Nizozemska, Belgija, Austrija i Italija, te Ujedinjeno Kraljevstvo) o čemu nam svjedoče sljedeći butlezi: Hamburg '73 ( 17.01.73. Hamburg, Njemačka), Nuremberg '73 ( 19.01.73. Nürnberg, Njemačka), Live At The Rainbow '73, ( 18.02.73. The Rainbow Theatre, London, U.K.) sa živom verzijom Mary Long, Vienna '73 ( 16.03.73. Beč, Austria) i Bruxeles '73.

Novi album, pod nazivom Who Do We Think We Are je izašao u travnju 1973. Bilo se govorilo da je ovaj album labuđi pijev MkII postave Deep Purple-a. Možda se malo preuveličavalo, jer album ima pristojne pjesme sa dobrim aranžmanima i još boljim izvedbama sada već iskusnih glazbenika. (u konačnici, je li Mk2 ikako mogao napraviti loš album - op: Shtimkily).

Nakon što je Ian Gillan napustio bend, Roger Glover je dobio obavijest o otkazu. Uprava je organizirala još jednu turneju u SAD, te zadnji posjet Japanu u lipnju 1973. Koncerti u Nagoyi, Hirošimi Tokiju i nastupi u Osaki su zadnji nastupi Mk2 postave. Na sreću i ove snimke postoje u obliku bootlega. Sa završnog nastupa u Osaki, 29. lipnja 1973. ke mastap CD "Final Truckin'" sa Gillanovim oproštajnim govorom farewell speech "...the end, goodbye...".

SA ovom turnejom se završio jedan veličanstveni period. Bend su napustili izvrsni pjevač čiji je glas bio jedno od glavnih obilježja benda, te tehnički primjeren i inventivan basist, koji su skupa sa ostalim članovima benda ispistali zlatne stranice povijesti Deep Purplea. Nitko nikada više neće dospjeti do tog nivoa više.burninmad
