Suprotno popularnim shvaćanjima, gotički stil ne odnosi se samo na katedralne strukture. Izraz se također primjenjuje na umjetnost, skulpture, dekorativne predmete i oslikane prijepise od sredine 12. do početka 16. stoljeća.Sredinom 12. stoljeća, u području oko Pariza nastalo je nekoliko inovativnih umjetničkih formi u sklopu renovacija postojećih crkvenih struktura. U početku sastojeći se od hibridnih elemenata ranijih građevina, primarno romanskog stila gradnje, novi stil je uskoro krenio svojim vlastitim putem. Termin, koji mi danas podrazumijevamo pod "gotička umjetnost" dominirao je europskim arhitektonskim izražajem gotovo četiristo godina. Crkve i katedrale gotičkog razdoblja trenutno uživaju ponovni interest i naklon. No, to nije uvijek bilo tako; tijekom stoljeća, gotičke strukture su propatile mnogo više od običnog zanemarivanja. Periodični prevrati popularnog ukusa su s vremenom inspirirale različite pokrete za potpuno uništenje tih veličanstvenih građevina.Kasnijom polovicom 12. stoljeća, gotičke strukture od cigala su počele razvijati svoj vlastiti stil u sjevernoj Njemačkoj, pogotovo u Mecklenburgu i Vorpommernu.
To slove kao gotovo najveći pothvati u povijest europske kulture.Koji su to elementi, koji su posuđeni od Lombarda i Franaka, koji su tvorili osnove gotičke arhitekture? To su: složeni prilaz i arhiva, alternativni sustav i rebrasti i kupolni nadsvod. Od kasnijih ( npr. karolinških ostataka ): modificirani bazilični plan sa svojim trostrukim prolazom između klupa, konveksno križno krilo, i njihove tri apside. Ove sve, osnove tipičnih Normanskih i gotičkih planova, su izvedene direktno iz Crkve Rođenja u Betlehemu, nastale nepoznatoga datuma. Moguće da ju je sagradio Konstantin ili Justinijan, ili bilo kada u vremenu između njih. U svakom slučaju, nije sagrađena prije 300-te, niti kasnije od 550-e, nakon Krista; dvostruki zapadni tornjevi, svjetiljke i centralni toranj iznad prolaza, i trostruki unutašnji sistem arkada, triforium i jedan svod u crkvi, višlji od ostalih.To, što te veličanstvene gotičke katedrale Srednjega Vijeka predstavljaju manifestaciju brilijantne arhitektonske sposobnosti je samo-evidentno. Tijekom svog vremena, gotičke crkve i katedrale su bile daleko više od običnih svratišta i mjesta obožavanja.Razlike između francuskog, engleskog, talijanskog, njemačkog i španjolskog gotika su definirane puno više negoli samo geografski.Najvjerojatnije u najtužnijem trenutku svoje povijesti, tijekom vladavine Napoleona Trećeg, francuskim gotičkim strukturama je zaprijetilo potpuno uništenje od strane Carskog Reda. Ironično, ta objektiva je najefikasnije postignuta u samom centru Pariza, u samom centru rođenja gotičkog duha, velik broj prelijepih crkava je razrušeno ili potpuno demolirano od strane potomaka njihovih srednjovjekovnih graditelja.Danas, religijski obredi se i dalje održavaju unutar većine gotičkih crkava ili katedrala, no njihova uloga u društvu je uvelike umanjena.Postoji velik broj gotičkih crkava, a ovdje su nabrojane samo neke poznatije: Katedrala Sv. Nikole, Crkva Sv. Marije-crkve u gradu Griefswaldu, Crkva Sv. Nikole u Wismaru, Šverinska Katedrala u gradu Schwerinu, Crkva Marije u Stralsundu, Viollet-le-Duc, Villard d'Honnecourt, Laonska Katedrala (1160-1225), Notre Dame (Pariz,1163-1250.), Notre Dame (Chartres, Francuska, 1194-1250.), Notre Dame (Amiens, Francuska, započeta 1220.), Katedrala u Bourgesu, Ste. Chapelle (Pariz, Francuska 1243-48.), Cologne katedrala (Cologne, Njemačka, 1284 naovamo; završena 1824-1880.)
