Voodoo ili vodou religija je nastala u zapadnoj Africi. Riječ "voodoo" nastala je od riječi jezika zapadnoafričkih fon-naroda koja znači "duh" ili "božanstvo" i vjerojatno je nastala još prije nekoliko tisuća godina. Izraz vudu danas se koristi pri opisivanju nekoliko različitih zapadnoafričkih religija. Vudu pripada tradiciji afričkog naroda Yoruba, ali je u međuvremenu postao hibridna religija s raznovrsnim afričkim, islamskim, katoličkim ili indijanskim elementima koji su u vudu ušli kroz dolazak robova na Karibe.
Vjerovanje daju voodoo religiji opake magijske vještine koje uključuju žrtvovanja, bacanje uroka i kanibalizam. Sve to potječe iz knjige S. St. Johna "Haiti of the Black Republic", objavljene 1884. godine. Knjiga je digla veliku prašinu među čitaocima koji nisu ništa znali o voodoo vjerovanju. Upravo na temelju mita koji je razvila ova knjiga, zasniva se uvelike opće vjerovanje o voodoou magiji. Ta praksa nastavila se preko priča, knjiga i filmova serviranih od strane Hollywooda, i zapravo je tek sredinom dvadesetog stoljeća došlo od otkrivanja prave prirode ove religije.
Sličnosti vjerovanja voodoo poštovatelja i katolika nalazimo u nekoliko vrlo jednostavnih činjenica: obje religije vjeruju u postojanje božanskog bića - Stvoritelja; neosporne su sličnosti između katoličkih svetaca i loa duhova koji su jedno vrijeme proveli živeći u ljudskom obliku, slijedeći posve jednake putove; obje religije, vjeruju u zagrobni život te postojanje nevidljivih zlih sila, duhova i demona, te su rituali koji uključuju žrtvovanja krvi i mesa i njihovu konzumaciju, vrlo slični. Sljedbenici voodooa vjeruju da svaka osoba ima vodiča met tet koji je u kontaktu s katoličkim svecima.
Poštovatelji voodooa religije vjeruju da je ljudska duša načinjena od dva dijela: Velikog anđela čuvara (gros bon ange) i Malog anđela čuvara (ti bon ange), koji za vrijeme sna ili transa biva opsjednuti duhom loe. Taj dio ljudske duše je ranjiviji i osjetljiviji, i za vrijeme tog ranjivog razdoblja kad nije zaštićen tijelom, može biti povrijeđen ili otet od strane čarobnjaka.
Svrha rituala je stvaranje kontakta s duhom koji pomaže osobi koja ga priziva da, naprimjer, povrati izgubljeno zdravlje, poboljša životni standard, ostvari neku svoju želju i sl. Da bi ih se prizvalo i odobrovoljiloduhovima je ponuditi nagradu u hrani ili životinjskim žrtvama, jer i duhovi, jednako kao i ljudi, traže nagradu za svoj trud i svoje usluge. Radi se zapravo o uzajamnom pomaganju izrneđu ljudi i loa – ljudi duhove opskrbljuju hranom i drugim nužnostima, dok ih oni čuva od zlih duhova i nesreća. Rituali se održavaju da bi se proslavilii uspjesi u obje sfere, odnosno u sferi života ljudi i sferi života duhova.
Vrhovni bog je Legba, koji predstavlja Sunce (koje je osnova oko koje se kreće sustav ovog kulta), Erzuli - mjesečeva boginja, i Venera.
Veliko značenje imaju talismani sa simbolima bogova. Ti simboli iscrtavaju se na komadu pergamenta (ili se mogu ugravirati u smaragdu ili rubinu), a obično se nose u crvenoj flanelskoj vrećici.
Mambo (voodoo svećenica) ili houndan iznose veve, simbol loa, praćen ritmičkim udarcima bubnjeva. Mladi pomoćnici, držeći zapaljene svijeće, oblikuju krug oko mjesta žrtvovanja gdje će svećenik ili svećenica iznijeti žrtvenu životinju (pile) i položiti ga u prethodno iskopanu rupu u koju će je zakopati. Površinu zatrpane rupe treba potom posuti zrnjem kukuruza i zapaliti. To je žrtvena ponuda bogu Ogounu. Nakon tog obreda, potrebno je veve vratiti nazad u hram.
Umjesto pileta, ako se ceremonija odvija na otvorenom, može se žrtvovati i crni jarac koji se vezuje u blizini središnjeg stupa sve dok ne počnu pripreme. Zatim se životinji tijelo i glava mažu mirisnim uljem. Svećenik ili svećenica zatim zajaše životinju (što je simbol dominacije), ponovno ga premazuje uljem i posipa kukuruznim zrnjevljem. Potom pomoćnik nosi životinju do oltara. Sve to prate ritmički udarci bubnjeva. Svećenik ili svećenica tada će zaklati životinju, hvatajući joj krv u drvenu bocu. On, odnosno ona, imaju pravo na prvi gutljaj. Nakon toga piju, jedan za drugim, svi okupljeni sudionici ceremonije. Jarčevo se meso nakon toga polako peče cijelu noć, a jede se tek ujutro.
