PUNK (rock)
Punk ili punk rock je vrsta rock glazbe i pokret koji se pojavio u drugoj polovici sedamdesetih godina 20. stoljeća u Velikoj Britaniji i SAD-u predvođen bendovima kao što su The Ramones, The Clash, Sex Pistols, The Damned, The Buzzcocks i dr. makar prijelazne oblike možemo naći i ranije. U Hrvatskoj su također krajem 1970ih godina u Rijeci djelovali Parafi i Termiti, u Sloveniji Pankrti, te u Srbiji Pekinška patka i drugi.
ROCK (i podvrste rocka)
Rock, skraćeno od rock and roll (često zapisanom kao rock'n'roll ili r'n'r), vrsta je popularne glazbe, najčešće s vokalima, električnim i bas gitarama, te naglašenim, jakim ritmom; u nekim podžanrovima rocka pojavljuju se i drugi instrumenti, primjerice saksofon.
Kao kulturni fenomen, rock-glazba je na svijet utjecala kao nijedna druga – smatra se zaslužnom za okončavanje ratova i širenje mira i tolerancije, kao i kvarenje nevinih i širenje moralne truleži. Popularna je širom svijeta i razvila se u veliko množinu vrlo različitih stilova.
Žanr rock-glazbe je širok i nije strogo definiran - naziv rock često se koristi kao skupni naziv za veći broj različitih podžanrova od metala do soula. Izraz rock'n'roll se češće koristi za specifičnu vrstu rocka iz 1950-ih i '60-ih, a kraći rock za krovnu kategoriju.
Black Metal
Black metal vrlo je emotivan (obično negativno) pravac u metalu. Razvio se osamdesetih godina prošlog stoljeća, ali black metal koji većina današnjih slušatelja poznaje, zapravo je black metal ranih devedesetih godina, koji se kroz godine razvio i postao, u mnogim slučajevima, vrlo progresivan i melodičan.
Gothic Rock
Gothic rock (također zvan goth rock ili goth) je žanr rock glazbe koji potiče iz kasnih 70-tih. Podrijetlom iz pregršt punk rock/post-punk bendova, goth počinje biti definiran kao poseban pokret u ranim 1980-tima. Kao suprotnost post punk bendovima i njihovoj agresivnoj hard-driving glazbi i stilu, glazba ranijih gothic bendova bila je introspektivnija i djelovala je s estetikom i „mračnom“ tematikom književnih djela ili intelektualnim pokretima kao što su gothic horor, romantizam, egzistencijalna sloboda i nihilizam. Značajni gothic rock bandovi uključuju Bauhaus, Siouxsie & the Banshees, The Cure, The Sisters of Mercy i Fields of the Nephilim.
Uvelike poseban u odnosu na druge žanrove alternativnoga rocka 1980-tih, gothic rock je uzrokovao napredak širenja goth supkulture koja uključuje goth klubove, goth modu i goth časopise.
Heavy metal
Heavy metal je vrsta glazbe karakterizirana agresivnim i brzim ritmovima, gitarističkim distorzijama i virtuoznim solažama. Korijeni heavy metala leže u rock i hard rock sastavima koji su krajem 60-ih i početkom 70-ih za svoje glazbene teme izabrali crnu magiju i mistiku, svirali progresivni blues, teškim rock gitarama poput Black Sabbatha, mističnih stihova Blue Öyster Culta, karakterističnog zvuka orgulja i gitara Iron Butterflyja, Blue Cheera i Vanila Fudgea, mješavine tradicionalnih materijala i rock skladbi Creama, te slavnih Led Zeppelina i njihove zbirke starih blues riffova i originalnoga rock materijala. Heavy metal je na vrhuncu bio tijekom osamdesetih nadahnut Aerosmithom i u svojoj tvrđoj verziji koju su predvodili Guns N' Roses.
Indie
Indie scena počela se razvijati u Americi početkom 80-ih godina 20. stoljeća. Pojam indie dolazi od eng. independent - nezavisno. U početku je pojam nezavisnih etiketa bio vezan uglavnom uz punk rock bendove poput Black Flag i Minor Threat, no do kraja 80-ih na nezavisnoj se sceni razvio čitav niz novih glazbenih pravaca, primjerice noise rock, twee pop, emo (koji ne valja poistovjećivati s današnjim popularnim emo bendovima), noise pop (također poznat kao shoegaze ili dream pop) itd. Još neki od važnijih predstavnika američke indie scene iz prve polovice 80-ih su Fugazi, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., Yo La Tengo, Beat Happening, Replacements, Minutemen, Husker Du, Butthole Surfers, Big Black... Neki od popularnijih predstavnika indie rocka (ako se u kontekstu nezavisne i underground scene može govoriti o "popularnosti") 90-ih i 00-ih bili bi Pavement, Neutral Milk Hotel, Built to Spill, Death Cab for Cutie, Modest Mouse, Of Montreal, Broken Social Scene, The Decemberists, Arcade Fire, Sufjan Stevens...
Progresivni rock
Progresivni rock (često skraćen u "prog rock" ili jednostavno "prog") je stil rock glazbe s utjecajem džeza, klasične glazbe i elektronske glazbe. Započeo je u Europi i ostao je pretežno europski pokret - američka rock glazba je više orijentirana na country i rhythm & blues.
Kad su bendovi počeli eksperimentirati s instrumetima koji nisu bili tipični za rock, žanr progresivnog rocka je rođen.
Izvođači progresivnog rocka su često osjećali da ih rock i pop glazba orijentirana prema radiju ograničava i tako su pokušali dovesti rock do kompleksnosti i sofisticiranosti jazza i klasične glazbe.
Predstavnici žanra su Yes, Pink Floyd, Genesis, King Crimson, Jethro Tull.
Neke od glavnih značajki progresivne rock glazbe jesu:
* Duge kompozicije (ponekad i preko 20 minuta)
o Primjeri: Rush - "2112" (20 minuta), Jethro Tull - "A Passion Play" (45 minuta), Dream Theater - "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence" (42 minute), itd.
* Neobične melodije i harmonije
* Konceptualni albumi (jedna tema se istražuje i razvija kroz cijeli album)
* Uporaba neobičnih instrumenata za rock glazbu (npr. flauta, udaraljke iz raznih krajeva svijeta i sl.)
* Neobične ritmičke figure i ritmički zapisi
o Primjer: King Crimson - "Thela Hun Ginjeet" (jedan dio benda svira u 4/4 mjeri, dok drugi sviraju u 7/8 mjeri)
* Solo dionice za svaki mogući instrument (bubnjevi, bas gitara, čak i vokali)
* Citati i interpretacije klasičnih djela
o Primjeri: ELP - "Pictures at an Exhibition" (original: M. Musorgski), ELP - "Barbarian" (sadrži dijelove djela "Allegro Barbaro" B. Bartoka), Jethro Tull - "Bouree" (original: J. S. Bach)
Mnoge od ovih značajki zahtijevaju određeni stupanj znanja glazbene teorije, visoki stupanj tehnike i poznavanja instrumenta. To je jedan od razloga zašto su progresivni rock glazbenici često smatrani virtuozima.
