Ashley Harkleroad

Ashley Harkleroad

Bounced out of  Tournoi de Roland-Garros by Serena Williams, American tennis player Ashley Harkleroad claimed a more glamorous coup by appearing on the pages of Playboy, the issue of August 2008. She was the first professional tennis player to appear in Playboy. After turning to professional tennis in 2000, Ashley reached a career-high ranking of No. 39 in 2003. She didn’t win any renowned international tennis tournament, but it seems that her beauty greatly compensated the lack of career success.

Combat Writings

At Combat

During the German occupation of France in WWII (1930s-1940s), Camus was a co-founder and writer for a French Resistance newspaper called Combat, which published articles condemning the sadism of the Nazis and the oppression of French intellectuals. Camus proves his talent as a journalist just as much as he does an essayist and a novelist. His cries of remorse for the dead and calls for freedom of the French people serve as inspirational testimonies even to this day. The outspoken pacifism which hes eventually awarded the Nobel Prize for (more on that later) is forged here, in the fires of an impure reign over Paris.

While bullets of freedom are still whistling throughout the city, the cannons of liberation are entering the gates of Paris amid shouts and flowers& This unparalleled night marks the end of four years of monstrous history and of unspeakable struggle in which France came to grips with her shame and her wrath.

Most of the articles written by Camus are found in a collection of his essays titled Resistance, Rebellion, and Death, though I believe that there might be a separate volume which contains only the Combat articles.

Su-24 Fencer – Mach 2.4

Often compared to the U.S. F-111, the Su-24 Fencer is a Soviet-made aircraft. Originally meant as competition, the Fencer proved that it was much better. In fact, the plane is often called the most dangerous aircraft that the Soviet Union has ever had. The plane was much faster, smaller, lighter, and more powerful than the F-111.

The best part about this aircraft is that it is able to hit mach 2.4 at low altitudes; not many planes are able to do that, as many times it takes a certain altitude to be able to fly at a supersonic speed. The Fencer is also equipped with missiles with laser-designators, which often means better accuracy. This technology along with terrain-radar makes the Fencer very powerful. The plane had its maiden flight in July 2, 1967 and was formally introduced into the military in 1974.

Flying, fighting or sitting?

About 1,400 Su-24 Fencers have been created; 650 of those belonging to the Soviet Union. Fencers that are slowly being phased out by the new more advanced Su-34. However, this phase out has not been quick and many of these planes are still used by the Russian Air Force as well as the Ukrainian Air Force- until Russia’s government can assure that there is enough money to cover the cost of building the new Su-34. It’s said that these planes were used in 2008 during the conflict in Georgia. Besides these two countries, places such as Iran, Algeria, Iraq, Libya, Belarus, and many others also use this plane for military reasons.
