I think it's just the prestige of officially being an official librarian officially. Even library technicians do more than you give them credit for. This hapens mostly with novels etc, where there are usually more 'gaps' on the shelves. In one of my earlier tech-support jobs I had to support barcode scanners. I don't intentionally break the spines on books, but don't fret if they get broken.
