A group that can trace itself historically back to June 24th, 1717 when four London lodges met to establish the Grand Lodge of England, but some state that the masons have ties going all the way back to Ancient Egypt. The tools represented in the Masons symbol are working tools (the square, level, plumb, etc.) which remind members of the tenets of the craft. Members today are said to be of the 'craft.' Freemasonry exists in many parts of the globe as a basically social club with many levels of status for the members to work their way through. When a member has reached a higher degree there is a ceremony to officially confer the new ranking. Stonemason's tools represented in the Masonic symbol are used to stand for basic virtues. The three overriding Masonic principles are brotherly love, relief, and truth. Most will wear rings bearing the symbol of the Masons with other certain attributes like background colors to indicate that they are a Mason and come from a specific lodge or that you have attained a specific degree of status within the Masons.

Masonic Gold/Onyx Ring
This is the masonic ring I wear, having obtained it from eBay a few months ago. What caught my eye is that it appears to be identical to a ring worn by my great grandfather, Winfield Scott Canby, and passed down through my family -- but the Canby ring does not have the S&C on the stone. Other than that, it appears to be almost identical.
I do not know if this ring had the S&C added after it was made, or whether it was created specifically as a Masonic ring.
Canby was born in 1861, so this style of ring goes back to at least the 1880s, given that he would have been at least a young man before wearing a ring of this size.
If anyone has any information on this style ring, I would greatly appreciate a comment.
My Masonic Signet Ring
A true Masonic signet ring is used as a seal to validate the authenticity of its owner. The word "Signet" comes from the word "Sign", meaning that the ring provides a symbol, a sign or a signature to officially stamp or mark important documents.

High quality fashion jewelry from the Kelly Waters Collection featuring this Gold-plated Round Masonic Key Ring. Each piece of Kelly Waters Collection begins with a non-corrosive metal such as brass, pewter or stainless steel. It is then permanently bonded with a layer of 24K gold no less than 20 micro-inches (mils) thick. That is 200% more gold than the FTC requires for gold plated jewelry. For high wear items such as chains and bracelets Kelly Waters doubles that amount to 40 micro-inches (mils). That is 600% more gold than other manufacturers use today. The Rhodium finish on all Kelly Waters pieces is also a beautiful finish that is very durable and will never turn or tarnish. - Picture shown above is not actual size, it is to showcase the fine craftsmanship and quality.
