Road of Life Journey Poster Success Failure Vintage 1970's 17"x22" Very cool black and white poster printed on 70# felt Ivory depicting the road of life. Choose the right roads and you have success. Choose the wrong roads and you will have failure. Great item for Office, School, Church etc. Great design with lots of cool detail. Would be cool to color for a project or just for fun. Poster is 20" tall by 17" wide. Will be shipped in tube. Buyer to pay shipping and handling below. Thanks for your order and have fun. Poster at top reads Success next to a large harp. To the right is the hill of lack of preparation but if you go under the hill you have true knowledge which leads to the road of success. Weak morals on the right side will lead you back down the hill on the road to faker. Laziness is where people just sit on the road to success in a chair. Short cuts in the middle of the picture lead you around the road to true knowledge and you end up in the quicksand of failure. This picture has so many cool things in it I could be sitting here all day describing it. I will let you purchase it and see for yourself. There is all kinds of pit falls and very few ways that are not straight that lead to success. Pretty much what we have always been told. Great moralistic poem and just too much fun. 78% (11) 1970's Mod Canister Set What can I say, this set is 70's style and it's awesome! You can label it as mod or art deco, it actually reminds me of the Pyrex pattern known as "Designs". But however you want to describe it, the colours are vibrant and the condition is very good. The larger of the two canisters is 6" tall by 5" wide, while the small canister is 4?" tall by 3?" wide. With the exception of one visible scratch and some very minor dings this set is truly in fantastic shape. The insides are clean and scent free 1970's Home Interior The entrance hall to a Mediterranean house, built at some stage during the early 1970's. This article offers unique insight into some of today's most relevant and exciting do-it-yourself home improvement topics. This article is an easy, short read that Kindle users will find very rewarding and worth the price of the article many times over. 79% (16) So this is CHRISTmas? STOP! Before you read the following I want you to know that in all honesty I have friends of every colour (Canuck spelling), faith, nationality, gender and yes...even sexual persuasion. I mean it. If you have read my posts the past few months...you will have hopefully deduced this and the fact that I believe in principles of equality, inalienable freedoms and mutual respect. One of those ultimate freedoms...is the right to believe in the God of your choice. My parents will tell you that I brought friends of every background to my home. In fact, I am certain at some point in their lives, they suspected that I was a Goodwill Ambassador to the United Nations and not a student. I blame my dad. He taught me that one can learn from ALL people and that one should judge a man by his character and his capacity to do good. My dad was...and is...a very wise man. I do not pretend to be God. The last time I tried to walk on water...I did not defy gravity. In fact, I got wet...very wet. I have no idea as to God's Master Plan...but I pray and hope that he has room for good people of every denomination. I especially hope that he has lots of room for sinners like me. I do not throw bibles at people nor will I attack your religious or non-religious beliefs. However, I expect MY faith (Roman Catholic if you wish to know) to be equally respected. So...in all honesty...I ask all of you...What on earth have they done to CHRISTmas? Christmas is sacred to me...and to hundreds of millions of Christians. Yet...it has been hijacked by the gods of crass commercialism and excessive political correctness. When I was a child, granted BEFORE the real St. Nicholas, Christmas decorations and ads started popping up in December. A few years ago, I noticed the ads were appearing November 1st...the day after Halloween. But this year, I saw Christmas trees already assembled in our local suburban mall in mid-October. I realize it is the goal of marketers and retailers to plan ahead...but at this rate, in a few years, we will have Christmas ads in January. I know 'tis the season to give. I'm all for that..and I am as guilty as any parent of our Consumer Generation in that I wish my children to have far more than I ever had...BUT...at what point does the insanity stop? When is enough...enough? When is it just...too much? I recently saw a documentary that claimed approximately 99% of what we buy will be in the garbage or not used by us within 6 months (hmmm...I think that includes my gym membership...sigh). The point is...do the Matteazzi's really need 5 computers for 5 people? I wish that was a joke. I won't even mention IPads, IPhones, MP3s (long obsolete), PS3's, PS2's, PS1's, Wii's, Gamecubes...DVD's, Blurays (I'm the guilty one there), etc. etc. Compounding the fact that we are being bludgeoned with ads of what we MUST buy...is the fact that you cannot go through Christmas without hearing stories of dancing snowmen, flying reindeer and grinches who try to steal Christmas. What on earth does any of this have to do with celebrating the birth of Christ? You're right....NOTHING. The true meaning of Christmas...celebrating the birth of Christ, has sadly been replaced in the minds of many by the legend of a jolly fat man in a red suit who breaks into homes and leaves gifts. Sadly, the only jolly fat man leaving me anything these days is our mailman who keeps sending me invoices from VISA. Even more unsettling are ads that tell us to celebrate XMas. STOP! What happened to the word "Christ"? If Christmas is about Christ...why has His name been removed from the name of His holiday? I'm far too skeptical to accept the notion that this is only an abbreviation. As if this wasn't enough...the god of Excessive Political Correctness has also raised its ugly head in an assault against Christmas. About 10 years ago I was representing a mother against Catholic Children's Aid Society. My respect for counsel representing Catholic Children's Aid Society leaped immeasurably when she (a Muslim) told me she was furious that the CATHOLIC CAS was NOT having a Christmas party. They did not wish to offend anyone so they renamed it the "Very, Merry, Berry Party". What the F***! Has the world gone mad? What is wrong with our society when a CATHOLIC agency fears naming a Christmas party a Christmas party...because of the word Christ? Not to be outdone, a couple of years ago, a judge in Toronto thought it was judicious (bad pun) to stop a Christmas tree from being put up in the Courthouse lobby. She claimed it was because all religions are equal, the court is secular and Christianity should not be favoured. I am pleased to say that the vocal complaints of many of my colleagues (including many non-Christians) made her back down. I appreciate the division of Church and State (thank you St. Augustine) and the Court should never favour 1 faith over another, but I have a real problem with the Court refus Gentle Collisions of the Season... "Christmas is a time when I get homesick - even when I'm home." -Carol Nelson Greetings my friends - this story got to be a bit long so if you don't make it thru let me wish you a beautiful season filled with delight and happy (and nostalgic) memories. Your pal. -Mark Dad loved Christmas. He made the coolest decorations for our house and, each year, our tree was a thing of beauty. I have many fond memories about our Christmas trees, I will try to be kind and only bore you with one: I was around eight or so, and for about four years running, Dad got it in his head that flocked trees were the only way to go! But he was also a do-it-yourself sorta guy so we could NEVER even think about buying a tree that someone else has flocked ("much too expensive, and besides, we could do it ourselves and think of all the money we'd save!") So it was off to the mountains where, for a $5 permit, we cut our own tree in the National Forest. We'd all trudge an hour thru the snow to find the perfect tree, cut it down and back to the car. Then, with a bit of twine, the slamming of doors, and the sound of the wind whistling through the car windows that never-quite-sealed-completely, we were home. The tree is balanced in the stand and now the lights. Dad had definite notions about how the lights were supposed to look - lights only, no cords or wires were allowed. So before the flocking, Dad would very carefully put the lights on - making sure the wires were hidden in the branches of the tree. He had this way of weaving the cords around the branches so that only the lights were visible - it looked great but what a royal pain it was to put them up (and to take them down again). Now these were the days when Christmas lights each had a small screw-bulb and a mating socket so after the lights were all on the tree (here is where us kids got to participate) he would have my brother, my sister, any myself carefully take ALL the lights out of EVERY socket and then seal the open end of the socket with a small piece of masking tape - can you say "anal". After all the lights were gone and sockets sealed, he brought out the flocker.... He'd buy some sort of kit that hooked up to the vacuum cleaner - it was a delightful contraption that would spit out this sticky 'snow' that would go everywhere. Usually, he'd spray it outside, but I remember one year when the rains just wouldn't stop, Dad built this plastic covered tent in the workshop and sprayed the tree indoors - in spite of the clear plastic wrap and miles of masking tape, we had fake snow in that shop for years and years after. In fact, I would bet that even today, if we were to wander in there, we could find some very dirty and very dried-up bits of almost-snow. The stuff would shoot out of the end of the vacuum hose and onto the tree. It was loud, it was messy, it was very cool. The next morning, us kids were up again. The white stuff covered the branches, needles, wires, and sockets with its slightly sticky texture and faint chemical smell (it hadn't completely dried but that was OK) - and it was us three kids job to now find all those tape-covered-sockets in this all-white tree and gently pull off the tape and carefully screw the bulbs back in place ("you kids be careful - don't knock any of the flock off or the wires will show.... no, here, I'll show you.... gently hold just the socket, try not to touch the wire, and slowly peel the tape... see?"). (now I wonder where my perfectionism might have come from?). Then we'd move the tree in-doors and the boxes of balls and decorations would be liberated from the attic and all five of us would set to work on the really fun part... Anyway, it was a study in nit-picking but those trees were amazingly beautiful. It's been fourteen years now and not a Christmas has gone by that I don't think of him, his decorations and his enthusiasm. It is a time of joy and sweet sadness - truly a gentle collision when I witness the delight of those around me and remember others. May it be with you as well. Hugs to you, my friends. With much appreciation. -M (This shot was taken a few weeks ago when the three of us were downtown Seattle shopping and enjoying a day together. I told them I had this idea for a Christmas shot so we split for a time so I could grab some images at the Four Season's hotel. I used, of course, my infrared camera but this time with an ND filter (I finally found something that works in the IR) and took a 15 sec exposure (I wanted to keep the people downstairs blurred and soft - that's also why I'm looking a bit stiff - I was holding as still as I could as I counted down the exposure :)). - about an hour later, we met back for lunch. The 'ghost' was taken back home a few days later. Fairly straight-forward PS work and there you go. your pal. ) Related topics: decorating ideas kids room decorating tables ideas decorative bath mats first apartment decorating ideas english garden decor free room decorating ideas football cupcake decorating ideas table decorating |

Constructed c.1844 by a developer as a rental residence known as Woodland Cottage, it was once one of the many Gothic Revival villas and cottages built in the east shore suburb of Clifton after the late 1830s. Although its architect is unknown, the cottage reflects the influence of Alexander Jackson Davis whose work includes a number of residences designed for Staten Island clients. Between 1858 and 1869, Woodland Cottage served as the rectory for St. John's Episcopal Church. The original portion of the house is a cross-gabled, two-story section of clapboard. Its significant features include a prominent center chimney, steep gables ornamented with bargeboards, casement windows with diamond-shaped panes and label moldings, and a porch extending the width of the facade. The gabled section at the western end of the house was added c.1900 by a later owner, the Staten Island builder, James Thompson. His work includes the exterior and interior carpentry of the second St. John's Church completed in 1871, a designated New York City Landmark. Although the addition repeats the Gothic Revival style bargeboard of the original structure, Queen Anne features such as the decoratively treated window sash reveal its later date. This addition is similar to the many turn-of-the-century residences in Clifton — some of them built by Thompson — which transformed a romantic suburb to the more densely settled neighborhood that exists today. Staten Island's Early Suburban Development The course of Staten Island's early history as a relatively isolated and sparsely settled community of farmers and fishermen was first altered in 1799 when the Port of New York Quarantine Station was relocated from Governor's Island to the north shore area that soon became known as Tompkinsville, the name of the small village that grew up around it. Regular steamboat ferry service between Tompkinsville and Whitehall in Manhattan was established in 1817, and by 1827 Staten Island's first summer resort hotel — the Pavilion — had been built on the hillside behind the Quarantine Station. Staten Island's picturesque rural environment and its accessibility from lower Manhattan also made it a logical choice for the development of New York City's early suburbs. Wooded slopes, panoramic views of Upper New York Bay, and extensive shore frontage offered an ideal setting where "men engaged in active business" might "withdraw from the labor and anxiety of commerce to the quiet of their own families, unexposed to intrusion." Thus was New Brighton, the first of the Island's large, comprehensively planned suburbs, advertised in 1836. New Brighton was initiated by Thomas E. Davis, a successful and wealthy Manhattan land developer. By 1834 he had acquired a large tract of land extending westward from today's St. George Ferry Terminal to Sailors' Snug Harbor and constructed several Greek Revival houses along the Shore Road, the present Richmond Terrace. The potential of the area quickly attracted the attention of other investors, and they joined with Davis to form the New Brighton Association. Streets and building lots were laid out and an elaborate brochure promoting the new suburb prepared. The depiction of the proposed development included in the brochure shows the hillside bounded by Hamilton and Westervelt Avenues occupied by a series of crescent streets lined by dwellings in a variety of medievalizing and classicizing styles. The western portion of the development was to retain a more wooded setting. There scattered rooftops poke up above the trees. Several large hotels and a number of bathing pavilions stand along the shore. The proposed suburb of New Brighton soon had a competitor. By 1836 another group of New York City businessmen and real estate developers had purchased a number of farms lying between the Narrows and today's Vanderbilt Avenue. Like their New Brighton counterparts, they formed an organization — the Staten Island Association—established new streets, and published an elaborate brochure advertising the suburb of Clifton. Unfortunately, no copies of the twenty-four page pamphlet appear to have survived and our knowledge of the Association's composition and intentions is incomplete, but if similar to the New Brighton Association's promotional literature, the beauty of the east shore with its rising hills culminating in the cliffs at the Narrows and its views of both Upper and Lower New York Bays would have been extolled as a prime attraction. Although a number of factors, including the Panic of 1837, determined that neither of the two suburbs evolved as quickly nor in the manner envisioned by their original developers, Blood's 1845 map of the north and east shores reveals that a substanti Jelly Cabinet Tin faced decorative metal cover on jelly cabinet for sale. The Basil Street Hotel was an Edwardian hotel in Knightsbridge built in 1910 in the style of an English country house. I indulged in many a Bloody Mary with Peter & Josephine in the 80s in its comfortable bar, furnished with sofas, armchairs and decorated with chinoiserie and bronze statues. Many of the staff had worked here for 30 years or more. I always felt as though I had stepped into the midst of an Agatha Christie novel. I gather Americans didn't like it much because it was slightly shabby and the air conditioning was inadequate. I miss it very much. Frommer's Review: An Edwardian charmer, the Basil is a favorite with travelers whose trips to London wouldn't be complete without a pilgrimage (or two, or three) to Harrods -- "just 191 steps away." The Chelsea Flower Show is right nearby as well. Several spacious, comfortable lounges are furnished in an English country-house style befitting the lord of a manor and are accented with 18th- and 19th-century accessories. There are smaller sitting rooms off the hotel's many corridors. Rooms come in varying shapes and dimensions, reminiscent of the era when hotels housed everyone from grand dukes in large suites, to their valets in small rooms on the upper floors. Nearly all units are traditional in decor. Persons with disabilities should check in elsewhere because the stairs make this hotel an Olympic feat to traverse. Even so, some older clients particularly like this hotel, which calls itself a "Hotel for Those Who Hate Hotels." We love its old-fashioned Edwardian gentility, particularly the antiquated bathrooms with deep tubs that still function perfectly. The best rooms are those overlooking the courtyard because they are the quietest. Front rooms are subject to the sound of heavy traffic. Hotel Mont Blanc Owners of Les Fermes de Marie and four other celebrated hotels in France, Jocelyne and Jean-Louis Sibuet recently turned their talents to rescuing what was once one of the most exclusive hotels in the ski resort of Megeve.Following World War II, the Hotel Mont-Blanc was where a diverse group of famous names (Aly Khan and Jean Cocteau among them) spent their winter holidays in style.Blending English country and traditional Alpine decor, the hotels public rooms are irresistible. Floors, walls and ceilings are covered in honey-coloured pine, the comfy furniture is dressed in greens and reds, and grandfather clocks, paintings and well-chosen curios abound. The same ambience is found in the guestrooms, each of which benefits from Madame Sibuets gift for finding and combining splendid textiles. A breakfast room is made particularly cheerful by Provencal prints and opens onto a patio. The Mont Blancs location in the heart of the village means plenty of apres-ski dining and shopping options. Or you might decide to relax in the hotels sauna and Jacuzzi (guests also have access to the spa at Les Fermes de Marie), or do what the locals do at teatime - sit by the fire with a cup of something marvellous. english country style decor After 14 years, Donkey Kong Country has returned with an all-new banana-hoarding adventure only on Wii!! Inspired by earlier games in the Donkey Kong Country series, Donkey Kong Country Returns is a new take on a beloved Nintendo franchise. The first Donkey Kong Country game developed for play for Wii, this new iteration blends familiar actions, levels and characters with a whole new graphical treatment and feel, as well as new control schemes and play options. Features include: a co-op play option allowing you to team up as Donkey Kong and Diddy, radically different visuals ranging from nearly 3D treatment to others that appear in silhouette, two different controller schemes and more. A New Country for Old Friends Under the influence of a group of evil Tikis, the animals of Donkey Kong Island have raided Donkey Kong's banana hoard and stolen his stash of bananas - and being an ape of large appetites he understandably wants them back. Good thing that you are along for the ride. With Donkey Kong Country Returns, Retro Studios brings Donkey Kong back to a banana and platforming hungry public in a new side-scrolling adventure with familiar characters and new levels that reignite the passion players had for the Super NES original and all things Donkey Kong. Join Donkey Kong and sidekick Diddy in a whole new side-scrolling adventure. View larger. Gameplay Like earlier Donkey Kong Country games, Donkey Kong Country Returns is a side-scrolling platformer, but although the game contains classic references, as well as levels and activities reminiscent of earlier games in the series, it is far from a remake. In fact, Donkey Kong Country Returns stands very much on its own not only in its nearly 3D status, but also in its new visual treatment and control scheme. The game features the familiar team of Donkey Kong and his little buddy Diddy Kong. The goal is make your way across Donkey Kong Island collecting bananas and search for hidden items as you swing on vines, ride mine carts and more as you avoid the variety of enemies and situations set against you. New silhouette graphical treatment of both game heroes and enemies in certain levels also introduces new challenges, as players must perform all actions from within an entirely new perspective. The game also features the players choice of either the Wii Remote/Nunchuk controller configuration, or a sideways oriented Wii Remote. In addition to simple navigation and jumping movements, the Wii Remote also allows for a variety of other actions, including: ground pounds, rolls and even air blowing with simple, yet timed shaking of the remote. In addition, the game also contains fun and user-friendly co-op functionality. In co-op mode players take on the role of either Donkey Kong or Diddy. Both characters have abilities of their own, but work together. Beyond this the game takes possibilities for cooperation even further, especially with players of different skill levels, as Diddy can if need be simply rest on Donkey Kong's shoulder and let him do all the work at times. In the event of death, either character can also be revived by the other by hitting a Donkey Kong barrel within the game. The game also continues the series' use of additional animal friends such as Rambi the Rhino, who can serve as a battering ram and can be ridden in certain areas of the game. Key Game Features Retro Studios faithfully restores everything that made the original series great, from barrel cannons to mine carts, and then builds on those elements with stunning graphics and new layers of depth to the world and game play. The game offers the traditional side-scrolling experience everyone loved, but with levels created in fully rendered 3D environments. Diddy Kong joins the quest. With his trusty backpack, he can produce a jet pack or Peanut Pop Guns to give Donkey Kong more abilities. For the first time ever, the franchise features the ability for two people to play together at the same time - one as Donkey Kong, one as Diddy Kong. Players can navigate the levels separately or as one unit. Diddy Kong can ride on Donkey Kong's back and hop off whenever he pleases, allowing novice players to ride on Donkey Kong's back through more challenging areas of the game.* Hidden items, puzzle pieces and other surprises are found all through the jungle. Spell out K-O-N-G by the end of each level to earn an extra bonus. Motion controls give players a real feeling of control. Players move Donkey Kong using the Control Stick on the Nunchuk controller and can shake the Wii Remote controller to make Donkey Kong slap the ground. Vibrant colors, beautiful graphics and fun characters draw players in. Even people who have never played a Donkey Kong game before can pick up a controller and start collecting loads of bananas. Every level offers new fun and new challenges. Sometimes Donkey Kong is running through the jungle, sometimes his action takes place on a tropical beach and other times he must become a master of timing as he jumps chasms in a mine cart. FRENCH CHEF KITCHEN DECOR - PEANUTS CHRISTMAS OUTDOOR DECORATIONS - COLOR TRENDS 2011 HOME DECOR French Chef Kitchen Decor
Julia Child - The French Chef Cooking legend and cultural icon Julia Child, along with her pioneering public television series, The French Chef, introduced French cuisine to American kitchens. In her passionate and sometimes breathless way, Julia forever changed the way we cook, eat, and think about food. Entertaining, fun, and real in a way that influenced every television cooking program that followed, The French Chef embraced Julia's passion for food and teaching and reflected her joie de vivre: "If I can do it, you can do it...and here's how to do it!" Now chefs of all ages and abilities can share Julia's love of fine French food and learn to cook some of her most-loved dishes with this special collection of 18 episodes from her original 1960s series, The French Chef. In her signature style and with bloopers intact, Julia demonstrates such classic recipes as boeuf bourguignon from her debut show, salade Nicoise, bouillabaisse a la Marseillaise, mousseline au chocolat, and many more delicious dishes. Bon appetit! Three servings of practical cooking advice per one serving of nostalgia is the recipe for this 18-episode culinary collector’s item. The French Chef with Julia Child, the pioneering public television series which premiered in 1962, brought French cuisine to American kitchens without a dash of pretension. Child (1912-2004), a cooking legend and cultural icon with her 6’2" commanding-yet-self-deprecating presence, leads viewers through some of her favorite and classic recipes with requisite humor and congeniality. The three-disc compilation is divided into Starters and Side Dishes; Main Courses; and Desserts and Other Classics, and includes several printable recipes from each category. In vintage black and white, the collection begins with "The Potato Show" and Child’s sage counsel, "When you flip anything you must have the courage of your convictions," before she flips half of her sauteed potatoes onto the stovetop. Peppered throughout the collection are such reminders of why Child was so endearing: she let the camera roll through all her culinary disasters. In another show, "To Roast a Chicken," Child lines up five headless poultry as if arranging for a family photo, while earnestly discussing the differences between a fryer and a roaster, the "full glory of its chickendom." Even non-gourmands will find themselves captivated by such vintage entertainment, while passionate epicureans will relish step-by-step demonstrations of wonders such as boeuf bourguignon (from her debut show), salad Nicoise, bouillabaisse a la Marseillaise, and mousse au chocolat. (All ages) --Lynn Gibson 78% (10) NYC - FiDi: Delmonico's Delmonico’s, at 56 Beaver Street, was America’s first fine dining restaurant. The birthplace of the Delmonico Steak, Delmonico Potatoes, Eggs Benedict, Lobster Newburg, and Baked Alaska, the original Delmonico’s offered a new novelty in dining, including the Parisian "bill of fare", or a carte, (which today we call a menu) instead of a price fix meal. The brick, Beaux-Arts structure was built in 1891 by James Brown Lord. The Renaissance-inspired building is faced in orange brick with a brownstone base and terra-cotta trim. On December 13, 1827, Swiss brothers Giovanni (John) and Pietro (Peter) Del-Monico opened a small pastry shop at 23 William Street called Delmonico and Brother. Business was growing an in 1829, they rented a room in the adjoining building, at 25 William Street and by 1830, they rented the entire building, which served as a restaurant next to the cafe. In 1834, the brothers used purchased a 220 acre farm on Long Island (incorporated into Brookln in 1855), where they grew vegetables, many that were not otherwise available in America, for the restaurant. In 1834, they purchased a lodging house at 76 Broad Street. The Fire of 1835 destroyed much of lower New York including the restaurant and cafe and just two months later, the brothers started rebuilding at 2 South William Street. The building was 3 1/2 stories high, and the entrance featured marble pillars imported from Pompeii, that today flank the corner entrance of the Beaver Street location. The first and second floors featured large "saloons" (dining rooms), decorated with inlaid floors and the most expensive decor. The third floor held several private dining rooms, as well as the kitchen. The cellar included wine vaults stocked with 16,000 bottles of French wine. For the first time, the brothers gave it the name Delmonico's Restaurant. But the public soon called it The Citadel. In 1845, another fire swept through the city destroying the lodging house, but sparing The Citadel. Under Lorenzo, Peter's nephew, the family business leased a parcel of land at Broadway and Morris Street to open the new Delmonico Hotel, which was the first hotel in the United States to operate under the European plan--with rooms and and meals price separately. In 1848, Peter retired and sold his half interest to Lorenzo, paving the way for a grand era until 1856 when Lorenzo let the lease expire, closing the hotel In 1856, he opened a new restaurant at Broadway and Chambers Street, turning the Citadel into a luncheonette. In 1862, Lorenzo opened a second restaurant uptown at Fifth Avenue and East 14th Street. He followed in 1865 with a new branch at 22 Broad Street. In 1876, he moved his Union Square branch uptown near Madison Square, and his Chambers Street location to 112-114 Pine Street. Lorenzo died in 1881 and chef Charles Ranhofer took over the franhcise until he died in 1884. Under the guidance of general manager, Young Charly, a new location was opened on July 7, 1891. By 1923, all the Delmonco's restaurants were closed. In 1929, shortly before the Wall Street Crash, Oscar Tucci opened the South William Street building as a restaurant, which he called Delmonico's Restaurant but which the public knew as Oscar's Delmonico's. In July, 1977, the Huber Family acquired the premises and opened a restaurant called Delmonico's Restaurant. It closed in 1992, and the building remained vacant for six years. In 1998, the Bice Group, which operated a chain of restaurants, opened a restaurant on the South William Street property which it called Delmonico's Restaurant. The new owners, Robert Ruggeri and Stefano Frittella, spent $1.5 million to recreate the Old World feel. The new Delmonico's featured executive chef Gian Pietro Branchi, from the Bice Restaurant in New York. In 1999 ownership changed hands again. The Delmonico's Building was designated a landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1966. The Open Kitchen Where the majority of Jules' orders are filled. The Wall: Growing Up Behind the Iron Curtain (Caldecott Honor Book) A NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER “I was born at the beginning of it all, on the Red side—the Communist side—of the Iron Curtain.” Through annotated illustrations, journals, maps, and dreamscapes, Peter Sis shows what life was like for a child who loved to draw, proudly wore the red scarf of a Young Pioneer, stood guard at the giant statue of Stalin, and believed whatever he was told to believe. But adolescence brought questions. Cracks began to appear in the Iron Curtain, and news from the West slowly filtered into the country. Sis learned about beat poetry, rock ’n’ roll, blue jeans, and Coca-Cola. He let his hair grow long, secretly read banned books, and joined a rock band. Then came the Prague Spring of 1968, and for a teenager who wanted to see the world and meet the Beatles, this was a magical time. It was short-lived, however, brought to a sudden and brutal end by the Soviet-led invasion. But this brief flowering had provided a glimpse of new possibilities—creativity could be discouraged but not easily killed. By joining memory and history, Sis takes us on his extraordinary journey: from infant with paintbrush in hand to young man borne aloft by the wings of his art. 75% (13) basement studio wall I sprayed chalkboard paint on this portion of panelling behind staircase. The Tagine is very exotic looking, and I am looking forward to putting some lamb in it. Of course, everything is a different color. iron wall art decor The Berlin Wall Today is a richly illustrated full color book that takes the reader on a tour of the last traces and fading memories of the historic symbol of the Iron Curtain-to memorials, parks, hidden back yards, old train tracks, factory buildings, churches, and Prussian cemeteries. The Berlin Wall Today tells stories of struggle, desperation, survival, and rebirth and of a history that shaped the post- war world. It also shows how the people of Berlin are reclaiming and memorializing the ground where the Wall once stood: Mauer Park, where young people from all over world gather to party; a guard tower that is now the Museum of Forbidden Art; the Topography of Terror Museum, which includes the former Gestapo headquarters; and landmarks such as the Reichstag, the East Side Gallery, and Checkpoint Charlie. Numerous maps are included that lead the visitor from point to point. Flemish Lines 2011 The group didn’t seem to be too impressed with this one, but I thought the colors were great... From the Seattle Art Museum: Interested in pattern, decoration, and ornamentation, Nicholas Nyland adorned nylon rope, standard bricks, and a wooden pallet to create three distinct sculptures placed throughout the park—their embellished surfaces echo shades of flowers blooming in this landscape. Flemish Lines, alludes to nautical activity and in this context reminds us of the passing ships carrying cargo or docking on the Puget Sound. In nautical terms, a “Flemish Coil” (often called a French-fake) refers to the manner in which a rope is wrapped in an orderly set of coils or circles, a method creatively interpreted by the artist in these three sculptures. Asia - Philippines / Talisay dumpsite in Cebu Talisay was founded in 1648 as an estate owned by the Augustinians. In 1849, it was converted into a municipality with Silverio Fernandez as its first gobernadorcillo and Pedro Labuca as captain. Some accounts claim that Talisay got its name from the Magtalisay trees which are endemic in certain areas of the municipality, while others claim that Talisay got its name from a town in Spain. During both the American colonial period and World War II, Talisay served as a haven of colonial military forces. The municipality served as the center of guerrilla intelligence operations for the Philippine resistance movement in Cebu during World War II. The returning U.S. liberation forces landed on the beaches of Talisay on March 28, 1945, and were helped together with the Philippine Commonwealth forces and the Cebuano guerrillas, an event that marked the eventual surrender of Japanese forces on Cebu. That day is now an official holiday in the province of Cebu. In 2000, the municipality of Talisay was converted into a city.[1] The municipality is now linked to Cebu City via the new South Coastal Highway from Lawaan, opened in 2004. This has brought some recent inward investment in the form of sub-divisions, some hastily planned and plagued by problems. Conflict has occurred between the residents of the mountain barangay of Maghaway and those of Crown Asia's Azienda Milan and Venezia sub-divisions. According to the National Statistics Office in its 2000 report, some 70 percent of the population of Talisay belongs to the urban poor. Talisay remains an important center for the production of blasting caps used in dynamite. The vision of the City of Talisay is to become: 1)An environmentally friendly city that provides quality of life to the Talisaynons; 2)A city by the sea which encourages and promote the balance of employment, business opportunities and human development; 3)An alternative commercial and industrial center to the highly urbanized cities of Cebu and Mandaue; 4)A tourism destination that promotes sustainable development of the waterfront area and appropriate eco-tourism activities to the upland areas; 5)A settlement haven that offers better living environment to its residents; 6)A city that promotes sustainable utilization of its natural resources. To attain this vision, the City of Talisay aims to: 1)Enhance and optimize existing and proposed residential and commercial sites in the waterfront and central areas of the city; 2)Capitalize on waterfront development, shoreline rehabilitation, river enhancement and greenbelt promenades; 3)Enhance and develop the coastal zone areas for tourism-oriented activities and improvement of environmental quality; 4)Optimize residential areas to provide the housing needs of the population in a safe, healthy and better living conditions; 5)Improve for agricultural production in the upland areas and provide appropriate amenities that are essential for eco-tourism activities; 6)Develop a management plan to conserve and protect fragile and sensitive ecosystem of the Mananga watershed and forestland areas; 7)Improve existing infrastructure and other support facilities to encourage employment opportunities and economic activities. Demography The City of Talisay registered a total population of 150,128 in 2000 recorded in NSO Census of Publication book with an average population growth of 4.25 percent. However, a special census conducted by National Statistics Office sometime in May 2000, specifically for the application of the then Municipality of Talisay for Cityhood yielded a population of 150,238 based on the number of residents working & studying in schools in other component cities, and residential subdivisions of the city. For the purpose of planning and drafting the CLUP 2001-2010, however, and considering the availability of socio-economic data, the NSO Population 2000 was used as basis. There were a total of 28,751 households in 2000 and the population density was recorded at 36.23 persons/hectare. It is projected that the city's total population will reach 224,587 by 2010. Based on the 1995 census figures, the dependency ratio of the City of Talisay was at 66 per cent. Cebuano is the predominant dialect (96 per cent) of the inhabitants of the city. It is one of four theaters originally envisioned for the complex by RKO, and the sole survivor of the two actually constructed. With 6,200 seats, the Music Hall was, upon its completion in 1932, the world' largest indoor theater. RKO was formed in late 1928 by RCA's David Sarnoff and Joseph P. Kennedy (father of the late John and Robert F. Kennedy) who had controlling interest in the 7ilm Hooking Office (F30) production agency. Through a series of mergers between the Keith-Albee-Orpheum vaudeville chain, and later with Pathe Pictures (of which Kennedy was a major stockholder), Radio-Keith-Orpheum (RKO) emerged as one of the six leading producers of motion pictures in America.[2] Created on the eve of the Depression and encouraged—at least initially---by its distraction-seeking audiences, RKO intended to construct at Rockefeller Center two small theaters for drama and comedy and eventually television as well as a large movie house and an even larger showcase for two-a-day vaudeville spectaculars. The grand scheme ripened as a result of Samuel Lionel Rothafel ("Roxy"1) who left his new namesake theater (located just one block west of Rockefeller Center) to join RKO. Born in 1892 in a small Minnesota town, Roxy was the son of Gustave Rothafel, a shoemaker. His parents moved to New York when he was twelve, and after working in a department store as a cash boy, he entered the Marines. Seven years later Roxy traveled as a house-to-house peddler and ended up in Pennsylvania where he met his future wife. While working in his father-in-law's bar, Roxy transformed the large dancing hall at the rear into a movie house. He bought a second-hand screen and projector, rented 200 chairs from an undertaker, hired a pianist and charged a nickel admission. He then moved on to Minneapolis and later Milwaukee, introducing such innovative entertainments as music and dance performances to movie theaters. Roxy returned to New York City in 1913 to manage the Regent Theater at 116th St. and Seventh Avenue (generally recognized as the first "movie palace") where he improved the traditional program with novel lighting effects and a 100-piece orchestra. In the following years Roxy moved on to the newly completed Strand, then to the Rialto and Rivoli theaters, and in 1923 to the Capitol heater from which he broadcast "Roxy and his Gang," one of the most popular radio shows in America. Roxy's brilliant theatrical reputation reached a peak in 1927 when he assumed management and gave his name to William Fox's Roxy Theater at West 50th St. and Seventh Avenue. With nearly 6,000 seats this opulent movie house was the largest in the world. Roxy allegedly intended to further enlarge the theater as a center for varied entertainments but when negotiations with William Fox failed, he found a most cordial welcome at Rockefeller Center. By luring the impresario away from Fox, RKO won over its most serious competition. In return Roxy was made vice president, producer and manager of RKO's theaters at Rockefeller Center. Roxy's only rival was his record of past theatrical achievements. He surpassed it brilliantly, especially at Radio City Music Hall, where he realized "the aspirations of a lifetime."[5] Roxy brought in the noted theater architects C.W. and G.L. Rapp to advise on the Music Hall's design.[6] And while it was actually built by the Associated Architects, the Music Hall everywhere bore the influence of Roxy's own imagination and comprehensive knowledge of theater design. On December 21, 1931, construction began on the "RKO Roxy" (rechristened in 1934 as the "Center Theater"). located to the south of the RCA Building on the southeast corner of 49th Street and Sixth Avenue (site of the present Simon & Schuster Building addition), this 3,700 seat house was Roxy's "intimate" theater.[7] It was designed for a mixed bill of motion picture and stage entertainment. Work was simultaneously undertaken on the "International (later Radio City) Music Hall," located on the other (north) side of the RCA Building on Sixth Avenue between 50th and 51st Streets. It was built in conjunction with the RKO Building which was partially constructed over the Music Hall's lobby.[8] In 1938 the Music Hall's east wall was abutted by the newly constructed Associated Press Building. The exteriors of the two theaters were similar in their low-lying limestone massing, a feature dictated by the building code then in effect which forbade construction above theater auditoriums. The (121 foot) high Music Hall, however, was almost twice as large as the RKO Roxy and considerably more decorative. Its exterior sculpture reflected the unique kind of entertainment which Roxy intended to showcase.
