The three-month-old boy is one of those children born to refugee parents in Hungary and so is registered with unknown citizenship. "I feel at a loss… no one can tell me what it means, but a word like 'unknown' never means good," said Glody's father, 37-year-old Leon Mukaba, as his youngest son slept peacefully in his lap. Mukaba fled his home in the Democratic Republic of the Congo about four years ago after falling afoul of the authorities due to his political views. Two years later, after he was granted refugee status in Hungary, his wife, Céline, and their three children were able to join him through the family reunification programme. Today the family of six is building a new life in the capital, Budapest. Together they wrestle with Hungarian, said to be one of the most difficult languages to learn. Mukaba works shifts in a warehouse, while Céline cares for the baby, picks up the older children at public school and manages the paperwork required to get medical care, receive a family allowance, and pay the rent and utilities in their new home. One of those documents is the birth certificate for Glody. While acknowledging that he was born in Hungary in September 2011, it leaves him a citizen of no country – a boy too young to crawl or speak caught in an undeserved Catch-22. Under the current policy, a child born to foreigners on Hungarian soil is generally not entitled to Hungarian citizenship. Instead, the parents are expected to furnish proof of the child's foreign citizenship – in the form of a certificate issued by the home country -so that it can be recorded on the birth certificate. Otherwise, the citizenship must be registered as "unknown". Yet parents who have been forced to flee their homeland may not be able to obtain such documentation easily. Contacting the authorities in their home country might put their lives in danger or jeopardize their refugee status, as cooperation from these officials might imply that they no longer need protection. Without such written proof, these newborn children are caught in a legal limbo. "The well-being of children without citizenship is seriously at risk," said Ágnes Ambrus, UNHCR's protection officer in Hungary. "Without a legal bond with the state, they could be denied basic rights and services – including access to education and health care." Glody caught one break when he was two months old. To help maintain family unity, he was granted refugee status, which ensures him the same rights Hungarian children have, with a few exceptions. But while refugee status may seem to be the solution, it is not a lasting one. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Convention on the Rights of the Child both state that everyone has the right to a nationality. In many cases, as with Congolese law, children automatically acquire the citizenship of their parents. But the situation of refugee children is particularly tricky because they are outside their home countries and cannot contact their authorities for proof of this legal bond. While many refugee families are never able to return home, some families still hope to do so one day. Fortunately, Glody's refugee status provides him protection. For other refugees who are stateless, however, it is important that host countries grant citizenship to stateless children born on their territory. Meanwhile, Mukaba is studying hard for the Hungarian citizenship exam. The test includes written and oral questions – all in Hungarian – about the country's politics, history and literature. Recognized refugees are eligible to apply for citizenship in Hungary after staying at least three years. If Mukaba passes the exam, his wife and children can be naturalized through him. Determined and optimistic, he attends an exam preparation class every Thursday evening. "My favourite topic is the one on popular vote because I think that is important for a country," he said while reviewing some of the course material. Then he pulled a Hungarian dictionary from a pile of books on his table to quickly look up the pronunciation of the word "hope". Huntz Hall 1919 - 1999 HUNTZ HALL gave some impressive performances on film as a character actor (notably in the war film A Walk in the Sun) but he will always be remembered for his role as part of the gang known through the years as the Dead End Kids, the East Side Kids and ultimately the Bowery Boys. Hall was the rubber-faced, eager oaf, forever the butt of the others' humour and the recipient of countless whacks over the head from the group's leader (Leo Gorcey). Told "The only thing that could improve your looks is plastic surgery", he delightedly replies, "Thank you for the compliment." With his wide eyes and hunched demeanour, as if constantly cowering from the inevitable blows, he created a memorable character and proved the most durable of the cast, appearing in 81 of the series' films (more than any other actor) including the final one in 1958. The Dead End Kids started life in Sidney Kingsley's play Dead End, produced on Broadway in 1935 and filmed two years later by William Wyler. The six juveniles from the play - Hall, Gorcey, Billy Halop, Bobby Jordan, Gabriel Dell and Bernard Punsly - were all recruited for the Hollywood version, recreating their roles as youngsters whose attitudes are conditioned by their poverty-stricken environment, making them easy prey to the influence of a gangster (Humphrey Bogart). Hall was already a veteran in show business, having made his Broadway debut at the age of three months in the play Thunder on the Left. The 14th of 16 children of an Irish immigrant engineer, he was born Henry Richard Hall in New York City in 1919, but was rechristened "Huntz" by a brother who said his large nose made him look German. After graduating from a Catholic grammar school he attended the Professional Children's School. While studying, he sang as a boy soprano with the Madison Square Quintette, appeared in an experimental television transmission in 1932, and acted in several radio shows. Hall then appeared in several Universal films which featured both the Dead End Kids and the Little Tough Guys. Primarily comedies, these were undistinguished, but the actor later stated that he benefited from watching the studio's main comic stars in action, particularly Shemp Howard and W.C. Fields. In 1940 Hall married for the first time, eloping with the dancer Elsie May Anderson. They were divorced four years later after a stormy marriage during which Hall developed a reputation as a woman-chaser. Evelyn Ankers, who played the female lead in Hit the Road (1941) stated, "On one occasion after a day's shooting I thought I was the last one to leave but on my way out I bumped into Huntz Hall (acne and all). He put his arms around me and tried to force me to kiss him. I responded as my daddy taught me to - I let him have it with my knee right between his legs." Bowery Blitzkreig (1941), made by the minor studio Monogram, was the first film in which Hall played as one of the East Side Kids, but it was the next, Spooks Run Wild (1941), that firmly established the team as purveyors of good-natured corn and Hall's character Glimpy as the principal comic, blissfully unaware of his own stupidity. (When Hall reads a magazine in a darkened bedroom he is asked how he can read in the dark and replies, "I went to night school.") Hall played one of his rare roles without the gang in Private Buckaroo (1942), as a corporal who teaches Harry James to play the trumpet, but his most acclaimed performance was as Private Garroway, one of a battalion on a suicidal mission in Italy in Lewis Milestone's A Walk in the Sun (1946), which won him the Blue Ribbon Award from the New York Theatre Critics Circle. Hall himself served in the Army briefly before being honourably discharged with bad eyesight. In i went again.. using my fingers like a rake to sift through the dirt..i found the entire nest.. Mom & dad had built the nest of long grasses inside the bag... I dragged out the entire nest in one scoop and found the 5th baby ...in the center of the dried grass nest. ok 5 babies and the nest in a tray,,,in the shade next to the bag of potting soil. I walked away for hours.. Not one adult bird came near.. yet there were many parents tending to their nests in the 2 story tall out door over-stock racks a couple hundred feet away. I pondered on what happened... the parents had made the nest while the soil was still in the high safe racks a long time before... the potting soil was now popular due to the warmer weather. The potting soil was brought down...and the parents never were able to track the location of the potting soil bag. And thats how i ended up with 5 baby birds..who on the 2nd day ( of being under my wing) are doing well and getting more active. boy these guys softly chip constantly.... like a cat purring. Maybe it's a bit like an elite club, but it's not that I don't want people to join -- It's my hope that anyone who wishes to can live this experience, letting us share (even if it's not spoken aloud) the knowledge that this is a strange, challenging, and ultimately rewarding club to join -- the most rewarding and challenging experience of my life. My chiropractor recommended one of the instructors at a local massage school, and she comes to your home. Do you know how decadent it is to roll from the massage table right to the couch? I got a nice, deep massage - almost painful at times as she worked some of my knots out - and yet still managed to drift off to sleep during part of it. Perfect. I'm feeling pretty good still. Getting tired more easily, but not awfully so. I used to sleep on all sides - front, back, left, and right. Clearly, front is out. Back too. Right side is my current preference. Turning over is quite a production, and takes several steps. Usually, waking up in the process. Luckily, I almost always fall right back asleep. I never realized how good my core strength was until I couldn't use my abs the same way as before. I miss you, abs! We're almost done with Thumper's bedroom. In the past couple of weeks, we hung curtains, finished putting the furniture together and in place, and bought a lamp and a couple of other small things. All that's left is to get things on the wall, and organize the closet. Really, though, the closet probably won't happen until after he's born and we figure out what things we want to keep most or least accessible. And, holy crap, does this kid kick! A lot. That kick count thing (time how long before you feel 10 separate movements) - says you should feel 10 movements in 30 minutes to 2 hours. When I counted today? Eleven minutes. Thanks, overachieving baby. Kicky baby is healthy baby, though. Healthy baby and sore, annoyed mother. Oh well. Can't win them all! Newborn baby Roo-5 Inspired by many example of this composition here on Flickr I thought I would have a go myself. This is wee baby Roo, a beautiful newborn just two weeks old. This was my first ever newborn baby photoshoot and what a challenge it was. I was told that newborn babies just sleep, well, baby Roo was a wake for the full 3 hours with very 'brief' episodes of having both eyes closed. It was lots of fun though and some beautiful images were taken.
