Deirdre, Jenny, Jeff and I had lunch at We, The Pizza/Good Stuff Eatery before heading over to the Library of Congress Book Festival.

After lunch, Jeff and I tossed around the idea of trying the gelato at We, The Pizza. I am not a huge gelato fan and Jeff and never tried it there but after looking at the delicious concoctions on the menu, we decided to go for it (it was also 95 degrees out!).

We went back inside and ordered only to be told the freezer wasn’t working so there wasn’t any gelato!

We left and headed over to the book festival. Spike had a line forming even though he hadn’t started yet so Jenny and Jeff waited on line while I went to the book tent to pick up the Good Stuff Cookbook (which I had pre-ordered on Amazon but, somehow, never got). When I got back to the line, they handed me a post-it note and said if I wanted it personalized, to write what I wanted on the post-it note. Well, being the sarcastic bitch that I am and knowing Spike has a good sense of humor, I wrote “Kim, I owe you a gelato. Spike”

When it was our turn, Spike read the post-it, started laughing, picked it up and said “I know where this is coming from!” He then personalized the book just the way I asked and kept the note to show to his sous chef (he stuck it on his phone).

I can’t wait to go back to collect my gelato!

"Yes, Jesus loves you. No, he doesn't swim in the toilet."

Note -- it served me right, given the description you're about to read, that the first time I wrote this, the system "hiccuped" and made me lose all that I wrote.

These two little angels are part of Maddie's nativity set that she got for Christmas. She plays with it all the time, so I couldn't put it away after the holidays. Today, it was the little guy on the right that she fancied, and today, I said things (in response to her questions) that I never thought I'd ever hear myself say:

"No, Jesus can't swim in the toilet. He'll get flushed."
"Why can't you get Jesus out from under your bed Is he stuck?" (Turns out her arms weren't long enough to reach.)
"Yes, I'm sure Jesus would have a great time playing at the park, but he's so small, he might get lost."
"Sweetie, Jesus doesn't go in the refrigerator."
"Moo, you and Jesus are too close to the TV."
"Yes, Jesus loves Dorothy. And you. And Mommy. Jesus loves everybody. No, he doesn't want to eat Dorothy's fish food."

And the best one....

Me: "Maddie, are you poopy?" (Obviously smelling something that required changing)
Moo: "No. Jesus poopy."

I am convinced that tomorrow morning when I set foot into church, I am going to be immediately struck by lightening.

The Lake Report 4.27.08

The Lake Report 4.27.08

What a beautiful morning at the lake. But somehow I got a cut on my face. I think maybe a fish bit me. Or I ran into a tree branch. It doesn't bother me but mum says she may give me a bath because there could be back-teary-uh in the lake. There are fish but I don't know about the back things. And I don't really want a bath.

Mum was going to bring my duck to the lake with us today but a disaster happened and so no duck. You see somehow the basement refrigerator got unplugged. And so everything that was frozen melted. Including my duck. It smelled good to me but mum was disgusted. She plugged the fridge back in so it would not smell when she throws everything away. So much for my duck. It was fine, really. What a waste of a perfectly good duck. Mum will just have to order some new ones for me to fetch.

We met some new dogs at the lake today too. They were why-mauraders. Penny played with one and I quite fancied the old girl one, but she wasn't interested. Oh well.

More photos to come of our adventures.
Love,
Ghillie

Day 111 - "My Office"

Day 111 -

April 21, 2011 - "My Office"

A shot of my "office" at work... on a typical day.

OK... technically it's not an "office". It's a shelf... about chest-height, on a shelving unit which I use for back-stock of teas... but it serves as my office. My place to write notes and lists... to store papers... to keep my coffee.

I have a postcard of my favorite painting - "Starry Night" by Vincent van Gogh...

I have an origami dragon and shark that my son made for me...

I have a NASCAR tie and a Whoopie Cushion that my friend and co-worker Justin gave to me...

I have my clipboard... which is labeled "BINCE"... because that's how my co-worker Patricia pronounces "Vince", and when I started working there she told me I needed to write "Bince" on my clipboard so everyone would know it's mine...

I have my freezer gloves...

... and my Canon Lens coffee mug...

... and my sunglasses...

... and my "Stupid Quotes" daily calendar...

... and various funny drawings and notes from co-workers...

... and a bag of pennies from my friend Kristin (she owed me $15.95... and asked if she could just give me $16.00 - and I said "no"... and told her she had to give me $15 in cash plus 90-pennies and a nickel. So she did just that!)...

... and a bunch of other stuff and odds-and-ends.

It's my little space.

My "office".

This year I'm rooming with an art student who's doing her IP (that big project I did last year-- the thing with the beetles and the baseball). She's a straight-up photographer (as opposed to an illustrator who takes photos, like me) and also a women's studies student, and she has this whole thing goin' on with women in the kitchen and subversion and so on.

This always cracks me up, because while I understand the historical and societal/cultural women+kitchen thing, personally speaking it has so little to do with me. I may be female, but I am perhaps the least domestic person that exists. I am not a cook. I like food that comes pre-made, that you can keep in the freezer forever and then pop into the oven when you want to eat it.

So I thought I'd have a little fun with her work. 'Cause you just know this is the kind of disaster you'd get with a baseball fan in the kitchen...

(I don't know what to say about the color in this one. It looks OK for me in Firefox, but when I view it in Safari it looks waaaay saturated. I'm not sure which is the more 'true' color. So bear that in mind.)

Makers of India's Foreign Policy Raja Ram Mohun Roy to Yashwant Sinha By J. N. Dixit

Makers of India's Foreign Policy Raja Ram Mohun Roy to Yashwant Sinha By J. N. Dixit

The book under review, Makers of India's Foreign Policy, is written by a renowned Indian diplomat, the late Mr. J. N. Dixit. The author served as Foreign Secretary in the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, and was a member of the National Security Advisory Board. During his diplomatic career he was Ambassador to Bangladesh and Afghanistan; and High Commissioner to Pakistan and Sri Lanka. He authored nine books, including the international bestseller, India-Pakistan in War and Peace published in 2002.

Since Independence, various prime ministers, foreign ministers, policy advisers and foreign service officers have played an important role in formulating Indian foreign policy. Dixit observes that during his tenure as foreign secretary, 1991-1994, he noted that a number of books, monographs and articles have been written about the evolution and implementation of Indian foreign policy. However, in his view, they have focused only on a few political personalities. Dixit's rationale for writing this book is to deal with this shortcoming in the study and analyses of Indian foreign policy. In this connection the author has also analysed the influence of international/regional political, socio-economic and cultural developments on the thought process of various personalities.

The book is divided into fifteen chapters, focusing on the role of various individuals, belonging to different circles of Indian society during the pre-independence and post-independence periods, in formulating reactions towards foreign countries and societies. Prominent personalities discussed in the study include Dadabhai Naoroji, Dvijendranath and Davendranath Tagore, Sir Syed Ahmed, Maulana Altaf Husain Hali, Mahatama Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Mrs. Indira Gandhi, V. K. Krishna Menon, Sardar Swaran Singh, Y. B. Chavan, D. P. Dhar, G. Parthasarathi, P. N. Haskar, Morarji Desai, Rajiv Gandhi, I. K. Gujral, Narasimha Rao, Atal Behari Vajpayee, K. P. S. Menon, M. K. Rasgotra, Brajesh Mishra, Jaswant Singh, and Yashwant Sinha.

Referring to the pre-independence period, Dixit has discussed two broad phases - pre-1857 period, and post-1857 period (after the first Indian war of independence). As assessed by Dixit, during the pre-1857 period there was "a feeling of inferiority and inadequacy" and it was felt that "India should imitate and absorb Western mores, its social and cultural values, and its educational and intellectual systems."(p. 22) According to Dixit, prominent individuals supporting this view were Dadabhai Naoroji, Dvijendranath and Davendranath Tagore, R. C. Dutt, Michael M. Dutt, Sir Pherozeshah Mehta, Gopal K. Gokhale and Sir Syed Ahmed. Dixit observes that during the second phase, post-1857 period, there was a realisation for the need to assert the "relevance and importance of India's ancient culture and civilisation, of Indian value systems" and that "there was no need to imitate the West (or India's rulers) blindly." (p.22) Prominent personalities who held this view were Swami Vivekananda, Swami Shradhanand, Maharishi Dayanand, Maulana Altaf Husain Hali, Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Badruddin Tyabji.

While discussing the perceptions of Mahatma Gandhi, Dixit points out that Gandhi's stay in South Africa from 1896-97 to 1914 and his struggle for the Indian community there, had a strong impact on his political ideology. Upon his return to India in 1914, he played an important role in the Indian national freedom movement and also transformed the Indian National Congress into a revolutionary movement. Dixit's assessment that Gandhi's stress on "tolerance, on mutual accommodation, on the commitment to peace, on avoiding the use of coercive force to settle disputes and on the commitment to freedom of colonial people"(p.40) has provided a moral base to India's foreign policy contradicts what India had actually practised. India's military annexation of the Princely States of Junagadh and Hyderabad, Sikkim, Goa and India's hegemonic policy towards Bhutan and Nepal are some examples.

According to Dixit's assessment, Jawaharlal Nehru, known as the architect of Indian foreign policy, believed that "India's geographical size, its demographic and natural resources and its geostrategic location underlined its importance in Asia and the world." (p.83) Dixit says Nehru believed that stability of neighbouring states was imperative for the security, national consolidation and economic development of India. Dixit points out that Nehru was basically against partition. However, in his assessment, once partition took place Nehru "acknowledged the separate status of Pakistan."(p.92) Dixit's assessment once again contradicts reality as Nehru accepted partition as a temporary measure. In his message on June 3, 1947, Nehru said, "It may be that in this way we shall reach that united India sooner than otherwise."(

On March 10th, Ocean Leadership held its annual Public Policy Forum in the U.S. Capitol Building to discuss the most relevant ocean policy issues. With over 250 RSVPs (the largest number for this event), the room was filled for the entire day-long program and evening reception. The agenda included addresses by three senators: Senator Begich (D-Alaska), Senator Boxer (D-California), and Senator Whitehouse (D-Rhode Island). Tom Karl, Director of NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center, gave a lunch briefing regarding NOAA’s proposed climate service and Shere Abbott, Associate Director at Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), concluded the Forum by discussing OSTP’s role in developing a national ocean policy. Between these speeches, three panels discussed sea-level rise, the Arctic system, and marine spatial planning. Each panel included experts from the federal agencies, congressional committees, and the academic research community. A summary report of the day’s discussions will be released in the near future.

REFRIGERANT MIGRATION : MIGRATION

REFRIGERANT MIGRATION : FISH REFRIGERATOR.

Refrigerant Migration

refrigerant migration

    refrigerant
  • Causing cooling or refrigeration

  • (refrigeration) the process of cooling or freezing (e.g., food) for preservative purposes

  • any substance used to provide cooling (as in a refrigerator)

  • causing cooling or freezing; "a refrigerant substance such as ice or solid carbon dioxide"

    migration
  • (chemistry) the nonrandom movement of an atom or radical from one place to another within a molecule

  • Movement of people to a new area or country in order to find work or better living conditions

  • Seasonal movement of animals from one region to another

  • the movement of persons from one country or locality to another

  • Movement from one part of something to another

  • a group of people migrating together (especially in some given time period)

Migration

Migration

The most spectacular natural phenomenon in the world: the Great Migration. In all, over 1.5 million animals -- primarily wildebeest, along with about 200,000 zebras and some gazelle -- travel 300-500 miles annually across the Serengeti ecosystem.

Contrary to popular belief, the migration is not a fixed event that happens at a particular time of the year. Rather, it is a year-round cyclical process, fueled by the vast herd's need for fresh water and grass. As the animals move on to new feeding grounds, they gradually move in a clockwise direction in the Serengeti ecosystem, with a short stay in Kenya's Maasai Mara. The rains largely determine the migration's movements and pace, making it difficult to predict exactly where the largest concentrations of hooved beasts will be at a specific point in time.

From the Archives - Auto-Biography: 1988 Toyota Camry LE

From the Archives - Auto-Biography: 1988 Toyota Camry LE

I remember this car very well. For the latter half of my childhood it was the main ‘family’ car and, later, in my very early driving days it was the main car I learned on. This was the Camry that began my interest in Camrys.

The Camry was not sexy or exciting. It was… white. And kind of looked like a refrigerator. A pleasant refrigerator, but a refrigerator. It was also quiet, comfortable, very roomy. I distinctly remember how slow and deliberate the steering was, how overboosted the brake pedal felt, and how the soft suspension would lazily float over potholes. Actually, apart from the anemic engine, it wasn’t drastically different than a current Camry, or any Camry in between.

Well, it also had those idiotic passive restraint motorized seatbelts. I still remember the day I shut the door with an ice cream cone in my hand, and the car knocked the entire thing into my lap as the belt slid up the A-pillar.

Another day, long long ago, when I was about twelve years old, my mother came to pick me and four other friends up from the movies. They piled in the back (along with the family dog, which she had felt necessary to bring along), and I got in the front. Jokingly, I asked if I could drive, and she replied, “sure, why not.” We parked, she got out and I jumped in the driver’s seat. I can still picture the rear suspension sagging on the ground, saddled with the weight of four pre-teens and a small canine. It was an empty mall parking lot, so there wasn’t much I could do wrong. I lazily drove around in circles for a few moments, then, suddenly, I decided to play a little trick. I shoved the gas pedal to floor, the front tires chirped and I heard a symphony of semi-frightened screams coming from the backseat and a “thump” as the terrier flew up and back into the rear windshield. It only lasted about three seconds, but what an exciting three seconds! Frightened by my actions, I slammed on the brakes and my mother came running over to order me out. I didn’t drive a car again until I was of legal age.

When I first got my learner's permit way back in the prehistoric era known as 2007, this was always the car I chose to drive. It was just so… relaxing. The red velour seats would cradle you to grocery store and back; the driving experience was so unflustered and ‘easy’. The doors shut with a solid thud. It was a sedate, predictable car that did its job, and did it well.

All good things have to end, and the Camry’s end was particularly painful. Eventually, I got my own car, and the Camry was handed over to The Worst Driver in America, sometimes colloquially referred to as “my brother”.

What has always amazed me about TWDiA is his uncanny ability to never completely total a car, but to accumulate enough small fender benders to demote any automobile to beater status, and quickly. Rear-end a Buick? No problem. T-bone a delivery van? Who cares! Clip a parked car in a parking ramp, slide into a ditch… it doesn’t matter! If memory serves me right, the poor Toyota was involved in no fewer than five (!) accidents over the course of about two years. It was aging very quickly at that point - rust holes started to develop, trim began falling off. The engine progressively became slower and louder. The power steering rack developed a leak and began to offer inconsistent boost. One day, on a cold February morning, the key was turned and…. nothing. After 22 years and 230,000 miles, it was time to say goodbye.

RIP Camry. Gone, but not forgotten.

Another picture of the ribs. I used a dry rub of my own making and stuck it to the ribs with mustard. In the future I'd try to find a way to keep the outside a little more moist. The ribs developed a very thin "bark" after 8 hours. I don't know if that can be avoided, but I'd like to try because the rest of the meat was so good.

the big crystal structure of Kosher salt, when left on the meat overnight in the refrigerator drew out some of the moisture and turned the spice rub into a bark like crust on the outside of the butt. it should help retain a lot of the meat's natural juices as opposed to letting them evaporate away.
