Basic Blackjack Strategy
Learning perfect blackjack strategy requires memorizing a ton of situations and that takes time. Today you're going to learn some rules. They aren't perfect but they are easy to remember and simple enough to follow in your next blackjack round.
In blackjack, your decisions depend on two things - your first two cards and the dealer's up card. To win a hand you can either get closer to 21 than the dealer without going bust or allow the dealer to bust while you stay under 21.
Rule #1. Always stand when you have 17 or more. Even if the dealer's showing a 10 you're just too likely to bust.
Rule #2. Always hit hard 8 or less.
Rule #3. Hit on soft 15 or less but stand on a soft 19 or more.
Rule #4. If the dealer has 6 or less showing they're very vulnerable to getting bust and you should always double down with a 9 or a soft 16-18.
Rule #5. If the dealer showing 6 or less you should stand on a hard 12 or above.
Rule #6. If the dealer showing 7 or higher you should hit on a hard 12-16 and stand on a hard 17 and higher.
Rule #7. The only two pairs you should always split are aces and eights. Splitting Aces gives you the chance to make two blackjacks. Splitting eights is always a good idea since played together they give you 16 which is the worst hand in blackjack.
Rule #8. If the dealer is showing a deuce through 6 you should also split deuces, threes, sixes, sevens, and nines.
Rule #9. Another important rule is to never take insurance. Insurance is a separate bet offered by some casinos when the dealer is showing an Ace. It's always a bad idea and you should avoid it.
Remember, there are many different blackjack variations. Depending on the rules the House Edge can change in a big way. The most common difference too look out for is whether the dealer will hit or stand on a soft 17. If the dealer hits on soft 17 it increases the House Edge.
