Welcome to Carroll's electronic newsletter QuickNotes, a weekly (and in summer, bi-weekly) synopsis of the news and happenings around Carroll College. QuickNotes is intended to keep Carroll's students, alumni, friends and employees in touch with college accomplishments and activities. THERE'S NOTHIN' FINAL ABOUT IT! Today may be the last day of classes, with finals arriving next week, but even in the end-of-year flurry and holiday rush, the Saints never sleep, and we saved the best for last. Read on! PILGRIMAGE TO ROME How can you get in on the action? Two Carroll Booster Charters will transport fans by air from Helena, with the first leaving next Wed., December 17, and the second on Thursday. The cost is $1,150 per person and includes air transportation, hotel, game and banquet tickets, tailgate and post-game party. As for T.V. coverage and game watch gatherings: The game will be broadcast on CBS College Sports, Bresnan channel 411, Direct TV 613 and Dish 152. Kickoff is at noon Eastern Time, 11 a.m. Central Time, 10 a.m. Mountain Time. SONG OF THE SAINTS WRAP IT UP Carroll's campus-wide Toys for Tots campaign is underway and will continue until TOMORROW Dec. 13 with a competition between buildings for the most gifts donated. The winning building will be rewarded with an ice-cream social. Here is the breakdown of campus locations and their corresponding age groups of kids to cheer this Christmas season: Guadalupe Hall: 6- to 9-year-olds St. Charles Hall: 3- to 5-year-olds Trinity and Borromeo Halls: Newborn to 2-year-olds O'Connell Hall/St. Albert's Hall: 10- to 15-year-olds Simperman Hall/Campus Center/Corette Library: Donations for any age group Just drop by your donated item without gift wrap in the boxes provided in each building, and Carroll's volunteers will take it from there to make sure a local child has a merry Christmas. SOMETHING UNDER THE TREE FOR MOTHER EARTH CC TV Helena Civic Television, cable channel 11 in Montana's capital city, airs the 30-minute Carroll show, "Saints and Scholars," every Wednesday night at 8, with encore performances. ALUMNI NEWS Deaths In the News Certified Fraud Examiner John Flynn, class of 1988, is a financial analyst/auditor for the Operations Bureau of the Montana state Department of Justice and was recently honored by Gov. Brian Schweitzer and Lt. Gov. John Bohlinger with the 2008 Governor's Award for Excellence in Performance. The awards for outstanding professional and public service were announced on November 17 and recently presented to more than 150 state workers at a ceremony in Helena's Great Northern Hotel. First Interstate Bank recently announced three additions to its Commercial Lending Department, including Teri Calton, class of 1992, and Guy Almquist, class of 1997. Almquist brings 11 years of banking experience in commercial lending and credit analysis and is a 2006 graduate of the Pacific Coast Banking School. Calton brings 18 years of banking experience in bank management, commercial lending, consumer lending and credit analysis and is a two-time Carroll IMPACT business campaign co-chair. (Christopher) Dirk Williams, MD, class of 1996, a major in the U.S. Air Force, reports that he and wife Katy welcomed their second child, Grant Austin, on September 5, 2008. Baby Grant joins his three-year-old sister, Ava. The family lives in San Antonio, Texas, where Dr. Williams is completing a gastroenterology fellowship with the Air Force at Wilford Hall Medical Center. They plan to move back to Montana after his military commitment is fulfilled. First Lieutenant Jonathan Sohl, class of 2006, returned on November 21, 2008, from a 13-month deployment to Iraq. He is the company executive officer for Echo Company, 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division. He was welcomed home by wife Chanel (Spillar) Sohl, class of 2007, and daughter, Briley, who reside at Ft. Campbell, Ky. Josh Solheim, class of 2008 nursing grad, was commissioned on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2008, as a lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps. Beginning in January 2009, the Army is giving Josh leave to complete a six-month mission in Bangladesh where Josh will be working in an orphanage clinic. ATHLETICS Men's Basketball Dec. 13: Alumni Game (exhibition) in the PE Center, 8 p.m. Women's Basketball Dec. 16-17: Northern Tournament in Havre, Mont., 6 p.m. (16th) and 3 p.m. (17th) COMING EVENTS Ongoing: Now on display in the hallway cases outside of the Carroll Art Gallery (room 034 St. Charles Hall) are paintings by artists from Bulgaria. This second in a series of three displays is entitled, "The Fulbright Connection: Contemporary Bulgarian Artists, living in the U.S." This past summer, after receiving a Hays-Fulbright 2008 Summer Seminar grant, Fine Arts Prof. Ralph Esposito traveled to Greece and Bulgaria, where he learned of a group of Bulgarian artists living in the Chicago area who call themselves Bulgarian Artists Abroad. Founded in 2007, Bulgarian Artists Abroad promotes Bulgarian culture throughout the world and aims to unify all artists of Bulgarian origin who live outside their home country. Carroll is fortunate to have works on loan from these painters to share with this community. Art on display now includes paintings by Kosta Georgiev, Jordan Ivanov, and Milena Pramatarova. AND IN 2009: January 29: Dr. Kelly Cline presents, "The Climate Paradox: Venus, Earth, and Mars," at 7 p.m. in Simperman Hall Wiegand Auditorium, room 101-202. Free. January 30-31: Senior showcase performance of "American Roulette" by Chris Evans, a Montana playwright. Revolving around a high school shooting, this is a series of vignettes about the people involved and affected. Directed by Carroll senior Jocelyn Bjornstad in the Performing Arts Center. February 7: Annual Campus Ministry Headlights Spaghetti Dinner at St. Mary's Church, 4:30 p.m., to raise funds for the spring break service trips to Rochester, NY, and Cincinnati, Ohio. Students will begin fundraising for these trips over Christmas break by asking for sponsorships and selling raffle tickets. Ten students and one Carroll leader will attend each trip. February 19-March 1: Performing Arts mainstage production of William Shakespeare's "As You Like It." Directed by Carroll Theatre Director Chuck Driscoll. Carroll faculty and staff free admission and Carroll students admitted free on Thursdays and Sundays. Performing Arts Center. February 23: Carroll will host the 2009 state "We the People" competition, with teams of high-school seniors from around the state vying for trophies and glory in a simulated congressional hearing. The winning team will advance to the national competition in Washington, DC. "We The People: The Citizen and the Constitution" is a nationally recognized program of civic education created by an act of Congress and funded by the U.S. Department of Education. March 27: Niel Brandt, professor of astronomy and astrophysics at Penn State University and American Astronomical Society Shapley Program sponsored speaker, will be the keynote star of Carroll Astronomy Weekend. An expert on high-energy astrophysics, x-ray astronomy and black holes, he will give a lecture, "X-raying Active Galaxies: Exploring the Environments of Supermassive Black Holes," at 7 p.m. Free and open to the public. March 27-28: Senior Showcase of the play, "When the Rainbow Bends," directed by Carroll senior Ryan Danielson. A powerful story about the lives of three people when one of them contracts AIDS. Merton Acting Studio in the Campus Center. April 3-4: Senior Showcase performance of "The Lion in Winter," work for mature audiences about the intrigues of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine, in the Merton Acting Studio (Campus Center). April 18-19: Softball weekend. May 1: Last day of classes. May 9: Centennial Celebration Kickoff at Baccalaureate and Commencement. May 14-17: Basic Preparation Course for Parish Nurses and Health Ministers. The class will be held on the Carroll campus at the Parish Nurse Center in Simperman Hall. The cost is $390 and includes educational materials and lunches. Lodging will be available on campus at a reduced rate. The Basic Preparation Course follows the curriculum of the International Parish Nurse Resource Center, St. Louis, Missouri. OK: on this holy journey, you won't get a audience with the Pope, unless he's got tickets to the big game: the NAIA National Championship contest between the #1 (and defending national champion) Carroll Fighting Saints and #2 University of Sioux Falls on Sat., December 20, in Rome (fine print: Georgia). In case you can't do complex math, if we win this one, this will make Carroll's SIXTH championship in the past seven years, and yet another milestone in college football history. And, it all offers up an extra dose of drama as a rematch of last year's title game, where the Saints beat the Cougars 17-9 in Savannah, Tenn. 
Those not on the charter tours but heading to Rome on their own pilgrimages can meet up with fellow Carroll fans at the pre-game, game and post game events. The cost for this package is $45. This Sunday, we're expecting a "high" of five below zero in Helena, but you can fight Jack Frost by warming your heart at Carroll Choir and Chamber Choir Advent and Christmas concert at 4 p.m. in the Cathedral of St. Helena. The Dec. 14 concert is free and offers a broad variety of music in many languages, with our glorious Saints voices conducted by Music Director Robert Psurny of the Fine Arts Department. State Rep. George Groesbeck (left), a 38-year-old Butte Democrat from Carroll's class of 1994, died unexpectedly on Dec. 7, 2008, after collapsing at home. A Butte native, he was a two-term representative to the Montana House of Representatives from House District 74 and was recently elected to serve his third term this year. George was also the human resources director for AWARE Inc., of Anaconda, and taught freshman writing classes at Montana Tech. For more on his life, read: 
Stacy Stellflug Handley (right), class of 1997, was recently honored for her excellence in health care with the Roche Jaune Business Excellence Award from the Billings Chamber of Commerce. After earning her Carroll psychology degree, she received her nursing degrees (BSN and MSN) in 2000 and 2004 from Montana State University. She is currently working toward her doctorate in nursing at the University of Colorado Denver Health Sciences Center. For the past four and half years, Stacy has worked at St. Vincent Healthcare as a nurse practitioner on the Pediatric and Pediatric Intensive Care Units. She serves as the clinical coordinator for the Montana Pediatric Project and works as a nurse practitioner for the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile. The Montana Pediatric Project promotes local, high-quality health care access for critically ill children who previously had to travel to places such as Denver or Seattle for care. Kelli Kuntz, class of 1997, graduated from Middlebury College in Vermont with a master's in literature in 2004 and taught high school English in Kalispell, Mont., for ten years. She reports that, in June 2008, she married Thomas Higgins in Kalispell, and they now live in Ann Arbor, Mich., while her husband completes his engineering degree. They plan to move back to Kalispell in August 2009, when she can resume teaching in the Treasure State. January 12: Opening for Carroll College Art Gallery (room 034 St. Charles Hall) exhibit, "Excellence and Degrees III," which runs through March 6. The last in the three exhibits featuring the work of faculty members from colleges and universities across Montana. Artists included include Mary Ann Bonjorni, Beth Lo, Bobbi Tilton, and David James from University of Montana-Missoula; Mark Moak from Rocky Mountain College; Joel Soiseth and Norton Pease from MSU-Northern; Gesine Jasmine and Jeffery Conger from Montana State University-Bozeman; and Brian Cast and Lea Zoltowski from MSU-Billings. The gallery is open weekdays 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; closed weekends and college holidays.
