U prošlosti, ljude nisu interesirale samo profilaktička i terapeutska svojstva koja su pripisivali hamajlijama i talismanima. Izvjesnim oblicima, formama i bojama, kako navodi E. A. Vallis Budge u knjizi "Amulets and Superstitions", pridavan je gotovo podjednak značaj. To se ponajviše odnosi na boje dragog i poludragog kamenja. Tako se vjerovalo da svjetlucavo kamenje i kristali odbijaju svako zlo i vradžbinu. Istodobno, kamenje koje je prirodno obilježeno ili ukrašeno raznobojnim trakama i šarama bilo je veoma cijenjeno. Kamenje koje je isplakala voda, sa rupama ili šupljinama u sebi, predstavljalo je djelotvorne i veoma cijenjene talismane, a kružno, polukružno i trouglasto kamenje predstavljalo je gotovo univerzalno sredstvo za zaštitu od zlih duhova.
Bijela: Vjeruje se da bijelo kamenje (npr. dijamant, kristal, opal, beril, sedef i dr.) odvraćaju urokljive poglede i da sa sobom nosi zaštitu neba, odakle – prema vjerovanjima - bijelo kamenje i dolazi.
Crna: Već hiljadama godina u vjerovanjima istočnjačkih naroda crno je kamenje (gagat, oniks, opsidijan, crni koral i dr.) predstavljalo izvanrednu zaštitu od zlih duhova i urokljivih očiju.
Ljubičasta: Ljubičasti kamen obješen oko vrata djeteta služiio je kao magična zaštita od bolesti, a dijete je činio poslušnim i pokornim.
Zelena: Zeleno kamenje (nefrit, smaragd, neke vrste safira, zeleni žad, amazonsko kamenje i dr.) najčešće se povezuje se sa bujnom vegetacijom i kišom koja je pospješuje; sa plodnošću kod ljudi i zvijeri, te polnom sposobnošću, energijom i upornošću.
Žuta: Vjeruje se da žuto kamenje (ćilibar, hijancit, topaz, hrizolit i dr.) pomaže u izliječenju bolesnih od žutice i drugih bolesti jetre, a prema prastarim predanjima, ono je postalo od kristaliziranih suza koje je Eva prolila kad je bila odvojena od Adama.
Crvena: U narodu je rašireno vjerovanje da crveno kamenje (rubin, hematit, jaspis, sandoniks i dr.) pomaže pri zaustavljanju krvarenja iz otvorenih rana zadobijenih od strane neprijatelja, u povredama ili prilikom kirurških intervencija. Također se vjeruje da crveno kamenje štite od vatre I groma.
Smeđa: Općenito se vjeruje da je smeđe kamenje, ukoliko se nosi oko vrata ili oko desne ruke, dobra zaštita od bolesti.
