The Jersey barrier with National Wrecking Corporation struck me as a good name for a heavy metal, grunge, or rap group. I was wandering around on a rainy night trying to do a 1-second exposure before I realized my Sony Mavica couldn't do it, so the Jersey barrier was to hedge my bets. The world’s greatest photographs: Girl burnt in napalm attack, 1972, Vietnam War.

The greatest and most famous photographs tend to have emotional impact upon us.

The naked girl in the middle is Phan Thi Kim Phuc, 9 years old then. She’s screaming while fleeing her village after being severely burnt on her back by a napalm attack.

The photo was taken by Vietnamese photographer Nick Ut. This photo won him the Pulitzer Prize.

Behind Kim are South Vietnam troops running with her. Next to Kim is her older brother and one young brother looking back to the black smoke, plus another 2 members of her family.

Luckily, she survived the attack and lived to this day.

AP reporter Nick Ut was sent to the small village of Trang Bang along Route 1, the highway that leads from Saigon towards the Cambodian border. North Vietnamese troops had taken control of the Highway there and Nick was sent to cover the South Vietnamese soldiers from the 25th Army Division who were ordered to retake Trang Bang and open the Highway. When Nick arrived he and other reporters also on assignment stood with South Vietnamese soldiers just outside the village watching the action.

The South Vietnamese commander of the unit requested an air strike and propeller driven Skyraiders, Korean-war vintage planes from the 518th Vietnamese Airforce Squadron, dropped Napalm on the village. When the smoke cleared villagers from the Trang Bang ran screaming from the village to the soldiers and reporters up the road. Taking pictures with two cameras, his Leica and a Nikon with a long lens, Nick Ut remembers seeing Kim Phuc running naked down the street:
As soon as she saw me, she said: "I want some water, I'm too hot, too hot," - in Vietnamese, "Nong qua, nong qua!"

" And she wanted something to drink. I got her some water. She drank it and I told her I would help her.

I picked up Kim and took her to my car. I ran up about 10 miles to Cu Chi hospital, to try to save her life.

At the hospital, there were so many Vietnamese people - soldiers were dying there. They didn't care about the children.

Then I told them: "I am a media reporter, please help her, I don't want her to die."

And the people helped her right away.

Nick quickly released that without help Kim would die and so drove her and other injured family members to the hospital. Kim already thought she was doomed and while reporters and soldiers tried to treat her horrible wounds she told her brother Tam, "I think I am going to die." Driving an hour to the provincial Vietnamese hospital in Cu Chi, halfway up the highway to Saigon, Kim passed out from the pain.

The hospital was used to war injuries, and after years of civil war knew that Kim's chances of living were slim to none and tried to triage her, or put her aside so they could treat other wounded who had better chances of living. Only at Nick's urging that the girl had been photographed and her picture would be shown all over the world did the hospital staff agree to operate. Nick didn't leave to develop his film until she was put on the operating table. At first his editors refused to run it because she was naked but when nick explained that she had no clothes because they had been burned off her body they changed their minds and sent it around the world

The Korean Cultural Center, Los Angeles (KCCLA) and Seoul Selection USA held an event, "Moon Tides: The Women Divers of Jeju Island," a book reception with photojournalist and writer Brenda Paik Sunoo.

Award-winning author, editor and photojournalist Brenda Paik Sunoo presents images from Moon Tides: Jeju Island Grannies and the Sea. Jeju Island's sea women, or haenyeo, scour the sea floor as their maternal ancestors did, harvesting seaweed, octopus, sea urchins, turban shells, and abalone. Driven by economics, these women divers plunge more than 65 feet underwater, while holding their breath for over two minutes, and labor well into their 80s. Their numbers have dwindled from fifteen thousand in the 1970s to less than three thousand today. Photo excerpts from the book received the San Francisco-based International Museum of Women's Community Choice Award.

9/28/2010: Image and color profile P8 of H.264 mp4 file encoded with Microsoft Expression Encoder 4 Pro. The image is a TIFF screen capture taken while playing the file in QuickTime 7.5.5 Pro on a Vista-32 machine. The color charts are generated by Adobe Premiere Pro CS3.

QuickTime Pro visual settings were modified by changing transparency from "Dither" to "Blend 100%" and "Straight Alpha." This results in an improved image profile compared to the standard QuickTime and RealPlayer settings (slides P5-P7). However, the image is still relatively pale compared to playback in Windows Media Player 12 (see slide P3). In addition, QuickTime cannot save the video with modified settings.

EE4 Codecs 1: W7-64

9/29/2010 Slide C1: Available codecs in Microsoft Expression Encoder 4 Pro on a Windows 7 64-bit computer. The only non-Microsoft compatibility filter is "Apple None" -- a QuickTime video codec that produces an uncompressed 8-bit per channel RGBA file in a .mov wrapper (see next slide C2).

A file was encoded on the Win7-64 machine with the standard EE4 codecs plus "Apple None" enabled. Video quality of the mp4 output file was equivalent to mp4 files compressed with EE4 on a Vista-32 computer (see previous slides P1-P8). Therefore, encoding with a reduced set of codecs did not impact video quality.

Women on the verge

Ok, so I love to work with images of women, I have to say they are my fave. I like photos from all periods in time….and since I am such a sarcastic bitch so are all of my women…..they say a lot of snarky things…..things women of years ago would never say , and even maybe some women today wouldn’t say, but I would……in a sense they are my altered ego….these mini collages started out as a pack of math flash cards…..cuz you all know women are not good at math……the backgrounds are mostly from magazines and other found papers, they were distressed with a sanding block, and citron. I used foil that was glued and ironed on just to add some zip……I searched my huge collection of images and found objects, and one of my fave, hard pastel crayons. I also have a large collection of quotes I am going to bring them to first Friday tomorrow . to sell. I will let you know how it goes tomorrow.

Farmhouse Collage

When were these photos taken? One clue is that car in the drive — the blue one. Dad confirms that it was a 1973 Plymouth Satelite Sebring. (It was the first new car my family ever owned, and it cost $3,500.) Also, this is my grandparents' farmhouse in Ft. Wayne, where we often visited for Christmas, and there is snow on the ground. For sure we were there in '74 because we had a family reunion. I took some other photos (black and white) at that time with what I assume was the same camera, because it has the same vignetting. So that's my best guess: Christmas 1974. I bet the camera was a Christmas gift. Wish I could remember more about it, but I was only seven going on eight. I apparently understood enough to realize I could photograph different parts of the farmhouse to make a collage.

Day 271 || Rusty Frame

Daily Shoot: Frames outline the focus of a subject. Make a creative photo with natural framing: windows, doors, trees, borders, etc.

My initial thought was to take a photo of my eldest with a magnafying glass enlarging his eye, only to learn that my youngest destroyed the magnafying glass and was thrown away. So then I had to come up with plan number two. That was to take a Red leaf and frame it with yellow ones, couldn't find a red leaf that was near the yellow. Finally found one and then saw these old metal rail bodies or something and thought that this textural difference would work nicely together. Pretty happy with the results, even if it wasn't my initial attempt. As photog's you need to think on your feet. :)

Funnel Shaped Orange Mushroom

If you know specifically which mushroom this is, that'll be very mush appreciated. Most likely candidates are: Omphalotus illudens, or Omphalotus olearius (Jack o' Lantern). Orange mushroom in persimmon color. Grown on a rotten mossy tree stump.

Despite shot in f11, the depth of field of this macro wasn't sufficient as I intended the focus should be from the funnel part to the brim of the cap closest to the viewer. I shot two versions with f11: one with the brim in focus, another with the funnel part in focus, but neither have enough depth of field to cover what I wanted. I learned I could stack the two photos together in CS5 and then auto-blend them to achieve that, so here is the director's cut, so to speak. :-D

I could really do with some help on this Bird as it is like nothing in any of my 4 Books. It is too large for either a Brown song or Singing Bushlark and certainly not a Pipit.
My guess is possibly a very uncoloured Chestnut Breasted or Chestnut Quail Thrush.
It ran around on the ground with Pipits and Crimson Chats. This Photo was taken on the Kalbarri Rd, 1oo + ks North of Geraldton, Western Australia.

Lately i have really been getting into this painting with light stuff as seen yesterday with my other light experiments with the purple, orange and blue colours i used. This time i chose to go for Christmas lights which i found locked away in the house and this was inspired by others on flickr. Had to wait until around half ten to do this though as it stays lighter due to it being the summer season. Very simple to do as seen with some of my past experiments done in the studio on my photostream.

Basically made sure my bedroom was pitch black, but before this i put the camera settings onto BULB and for each one of today's experiments i gave an exposure of 2 - 10 seconds on each one with me moving around the Christmas lights in the dark to create an cool magical colour effect. I just hope it inspires other flickr users to do the same as it is an wonderful photographic art. This experiment has probably been slightly overexposed so i had to increase the light/brightness/contrast to highlight the foreground light against the black background.

The Toronto Palestinian Film Festival

You undoubtedly recognize TIFF as the acronym for the Toronto International Film Festival, but if you're not acquainted with TPFF, then this is your opportunity! The Toronto Palestinian Film Festival is about to begin! Running from October 2nd until the 8th, it features 22 films showcasing Palestinian identity and politics at the Bloor, AGO and Innis theatres. And if food for thought isn't enough to sustain you, then on Sunday, October 3rd at 11:00 am, TPFF is hosting a Traditional Palestinian Breakfast- Sahtain!, catered by renowned Palestinian chef and owner of 93 Harbord, Isam Kaisi.

On September 16, 2010, TPFF kicked off with a pre-festival panel discussion, where two well-known Irish directors discussed their recent collaborative work and the challenges they faced making a political film in the Middle East. Irish director Ken Loach and director/ author Paul Laverty took time out from TIFF 2010, where they were premiering their newest film, "Route Irish," and Laverty's film, "Even The Rain," to participate in the TPFF hosted event moderated by Festival Coordinator, Rafeef Ziadah. Both directors had pulled their films from TIFF in 2009, in response to a boycott call from the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT) over Tiff’s controversial "spotlight on Tel Aviv" segment. The conversation with Loach and Laverty touched upon the Palestinian solidarity movement, the making of “Route Irish”, their experiences with boycott and censorship, and what it means to be "balanced". Ken Loach and Paul Laverty were also interviewed by Michael Moore during TIFF 2010 on Politics and Cinema, as part of their Mavericks programme. Ken Loach is known for his hard hitting, evocative and highly political filmmaking. His historic IRA drama, “The Wind That Shakes the Barley”, won the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 2006. "Route Irish” is the name given by coalition forces to a dangerous stretch of highway between Baghdad’s airport and the "Green Zone". The film is about "security contractors" (whom one might also label “foreign mercenaries”) working in Iraq, and is set primarily in Liverpool. It tells the story of Fergus (Mark Womack), a former British soldier who works in this capacity in Iraq. After his childhood friend, Frankie, is killed in a roadside attack along "Route Irish", Fergus rejects the official explanation of his friend's death and seeks to uncover the truth. This latest work confronts the human toll of the Iraq war, local as well as occupiers. It also addresses the disturbing unofficial policy of replacing the coalition forces with privatized soldiers, who are more costly to taxpayers and less accountable to law than enlisted ranks.

On October 3d, TPFF hosts another panel discussion on, "The State of Contemporary Palestinian Cinema," with director Michel Khleifi and Palestinian-Canadian producer Christina Piovesan (“Amreeka”,“The Whistleblower”), They will discuss their experiences making films on Palestine and filming in Palestine, the role of film to tell the Palestinian narrative and share their thoughts on the future direction of Palestinian cinema. It takes place at 3:00pm at Beit Zatoun.
"The Time That Remains," by director Elia Sulieman, opens the festival on Saturday, October 2nd at 6:30 pm. Michel Khleifi will be attending the TPFF Canadian Premiere of his most recent feature film “Zindeeq”, which won Best Film at the Dubai International Film Festival (2009) He is widely considered to be one of the founders of contemporary Palestinian cinema. A writer, director and producer, Khleifi left Nazareth for Belgium in 1970. His awards include the International Critics' Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and the Golden Shell at San Sebastian International Film Festival in 1987. “Zindeeq” will be screened on October 5th at 7:00pm at Jackman Hall, AGO, followed by a Q & A with the director. Among the 22 films to be shown is "Budrus" by director Julia Bacha, which screened at Hot Docs 2010 and was recently reviewed by Linda Dawn Hammond in Magic Carpet. If you missed it then, you can catch it now. A highly recommended film which also appeared at Hot Docs 2010, is Swiss director Nicolas Wadimoff’s, “AISHEEN (Still Alive in Gaza)”, a beautiful and thought provoking documentary about Gaza following Israel’s January 2009 offensive, whose imagery and narrative borders on the surreal. The film is propelled by the compelling music provided by a local rap group, DARG Team. As if restrictions from Israel aren’t enough, there is home grown intolerance to contend with. In one scene, a radio interview is cut short as a religious program follows too closely after, and religious music must be “buffered” from a proximity to rap. Spring is in the air. Well, not so much this week like the last but it is officially here. The mountains have been getting pounded with snow the last few days which seems to be a spring time ritual here in the North West. I’m hoping to close out the year tomorrow and take advantage of some of the fresh fallen snow.

All snow aside, Priya and I just returned from a trip to the beautiful San Juan Islands. We stayed at a friends place in Friday Harbor and really enjoyed the dining, drinking, exploring and relaxing. Here are a few places that are worth checking out if you make it to the island. Downriggers is a great spot for delicious food and drinks with a brilliant view. Blue Water is a great casual spot for drinks and specials. Mt Young is a scenic hike with moderate effort to get to the top. Panoramic views of the islands, mountains and sea greet you as you approach the “summit”. Which brings us to the Photo of the Month.

This was taken at the top of Mt Young looking west. The sun was just hovering above this lonely tree atop the rock and moss which makes up Mt Young. Something about this photo is majestic to me. It was just so perfect. It was like it was waiting for me at the top of the climb. I love the simplicity of the tree and the complexity of the layers of islands and sky. It was really a beautiful moment snapping this shot. Also, it really helped strengthen my recent discovery of harnessing the great feelings you have when you are enjoying something. I have been really trying to consciously feel the positive energy when accomplishing something. Whether it’s a run, a bike ride, a climb, a meal, a laugh or editing a photo, I have been working on bottling up the feeling and storing it for a rainy day. Nothing great comes easy. When you reach the greatness, the hard work is almost always worth it. This is my way of not giving up and knowing the feeling will be unmatched by any other which really helps ease the pain of the journey. You can apply this to almost anything. (Mike tips back in his chair and strokes his goatee.)

I have a ton of shots I am working on which will be up with in a week or so. Which is a great door to my last point. My print shop is finally up and running!!! You no longer have to deal with me if you want prints. Just click on “prints” on my website and you will be directed to my SmugMug page which will have all my available prints in several different sizes for ordering. As of now, I only have the photos which are hanging at Greenlake Bar & Grill available for ordering but I will be adding more this week. Stop by and let me know what you think. I’m doing some revisiting on some old travel photos. These photos have been in my Flickr for about a year now, and I decided to give them a second chance. I can explain that.

Recently I’ve read on a photographer’s website that people should publish (post/upload) their best works only. The hint to achieve that was to first pick the Top 50 among them. Once this is done, then the pick the Top 40 and keep on like this until finally reaching Top 10. Then you are good to upload them.

Analyzing my photos from last year visit to Italy, I realized I had too many photos there (192 photos). So, why not choose my Top 10? Besides that, after 1 year, I’ve learned something about Lightroom, so, why not re-do some post-processing also? At first, I thought “It will be piece of cake. I can do that in a couple hours”. Well, until things started to go all wrong…

What is the problem? Choosing the photos is not an easy task. Not that the pictures are too good, but because they have lots of (good) memories in them. It’s difficult to have the criteria solely based on composition, colors, exposure and other technical stuff. I’ve tried hard to reach at least my Top 50, but couldn’t go farther than Top 60 (it was like 57 but decided to round up so it would sound better).

If someone feel like giving me some hand and say something like “Fabio, take this one from the list, it’s is not so good” I will take any suggestions.
