University of Vermont men's hockey and women's basketball teams honored for reaching NCAA Tournaments, Church Street Marketplace, Saturday, May 2, 2009. Attending were coaches head coaches Sharon Dawley and Kevin Sneddon. VT Gov. Jim Douglas and wife Dorothy, UVM President Daniel Mark Fogel and wife Rachel Kahn-Fogel, Dr. Robert Corran, UVM’s Associate Vice President & Director of Athletics, Burlington Mayor Bob Kiss and coaching staffs from both teams. The Vermont women's basketball team won its fifth America East Championship with upset wins over No. 2 Hartford and No. 1 Boston University and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Catamounts played eventual national champion Connecticut in the first round and finished the season with a record of 21-12. The Vermont men's hockey team advanced to the Frozen Four for the second time in school history after a thrilling double-overtime victory over Air Force in the NCAA East Regional Championship Game. Dan Lawson's game-winning goal went through the net and was reviewed during a 12-minute stoppage before it was determined that UVM had won the game. Vermont fell to eventual national champion Boston University in the national semifinals and closed out the year with a record of 22-12-5, the most wins since the 1996-97 season. The Inventor An inventor in the 50’s who was also a goaltender was a whiz on the ice. He had supreme reflexes and perhaps a little bit of a death wish as a hard frozen puck whized around his unprotected head at 110 miles per hour. It was a fury of rubber, wood, and steel as the determined battle for the puck unfolded in front of him. But facing serious injury and even death the inventor defended his net with equal tenacity. However the many injuries to his face including broken teeth, broken bones and countless stitches told the inventor that there must be a better way. After yet another broken and bloodied face the inventor emerged from the dressing room for the third period........and to the puzzlement of some, delight of others, and amazement to all.......for the first time in the history of hockey.....the goalie mask was born.
